I have no problem ignoring them if I think they're stupid. But if I like a game, I like having extra challenges to keep me engaged.

Meh. I like the idea, but people tend to grind them out so they don't mean anything except that you've dedicated a lot of time to a particular title. tongue I like achievements that come more "naturally" that you happen to come across in your regular gameplay...

Not bad having goals and accomplishments to reach in games. Makes them a little bit more interesting to keep playing anyways. Its why I liked warhammer at the start.

I like achievements that are a challenge, I dislike achievements where you would have to go out of your way to do something boring and stupid.

Achievements can add a new layer or spin to a game that increases its play time. Or they can be mindless drivel designed to waste your time on pointless tasks.

I like achievements that are more like life... they aren't push-button "do x get y immediately" rewards.

You get a "defender of the Realm" award, which triggers after you've repaired x doors, given away y amount of gold to an equipment fund, assisted in z epic armor quests. But... it only triggers RANDOMLY somewhere down the road when you're doing one of those things, with only 1 chance per day it'll trigger. Likely about a month or two down the road.

Stuff that incents you to make the game more than point-click-shoot-min-max.

DAoC had this from player-created incentives in the earlier days. When that faded, so did my interest in the game. And frankly, I've never latched onto another MMOG, for lack of same.

I came to this thread to declare them stupid, but then I started typing and realized that they are no more or less stupid than things like 'levels' or 'gear' or 'points' or whatever. They're ALL 'achievements.' So I guess they're awesome, and necessary.

Depends on the execution of it.. achievements like most kills with such and such gun or find hidden gems are kind of stupid.

Achievements for completing side quests are fun (the side quest is fun though not the achievement).

They're fun sometimes, can help the longevity witgh a simpler game.
I don't tend to grind out any achievemnts though that I don't find fun in the first place.

MOre yay than nay, if they put some thought behind them.

peace

Depends on the game. I spent WAYY too much time chasing down collections in Rift (and only in Moonshade), just so that my character could get the title "The Highlander". Other games I'll ignore them completely.

I never understood the appeal with achievements. It is akin to a kindergarten gold star.

This. Most of the time it's a major 'meh' so I chose that.

In some very rare instances, they can be fun to try and get.. like in TF2 grin
