really
stupid girlfriend assumed I was doing it, ummm its her car why would I keep track of oil changes and maintenace and I never changed the oil in her car to begin with.
she assumed I do it because I change the oil in my jeep.
well my jeep is different I dont have to jack it up to change the oil,its tall enough that I crawl right under it.

My youngest daughter drive 60 miles to work each way. She only changes her oil when the guys are standing out with signs for 5 bucks off cause they are slow. She wonders why her cars don't last long. For the record, when they were teens I taught them to drive plus made them both change their own oil/filter and a tire while I supervised before I turned their new cars over to them. Made them change oil/filter so they would get the idea how important it is. The oldest does all her own oil changes. When she was 17 we went out with her 77 Camaro and rebuilt the top end with all new parts: Cam, double roller timing set, Edelbrock, Holley, lots of chrome and put a new exhaust on it.

I am thankful my dad gave me a respect for mechanical things.
I dont abuse my vehicles that why I am still driving my 2000 jeep and it runs and handles just like the day I picked it up.
I take care of her and she takes care of me, I have driven her on the trails of Acadia National Park to the surf on Daytona Beach during spring break to the floors of the Grand Canyon and every place in between.
When 4x4ing I take it slow, no need to beat the hell out of your truck, save it for when you need it.
And I plan on turning this jeep into a expedition vehicle.

and there is another issue with her car that causes the CEL light to stay lit, its an expensive fix and I dont have a lift so I cant fix it.

so drive her car to the oil change shop and get them to do it? Maybe the next time you take the car to drive it, take a few minutes and stop by and have it changed either before or after you do what you need to do with her car Thats a nice gesture and alot less work for you than doing it yourself. You score brownie points with her for doing something she forgets to do without having to do the work yourself. Instead of just calling her stupid(which Im sure she'd appreciate) you could do something to help her. :P
Plus alot of women feel awkward still at garages and quick oil change places since its mostly all guys working there and some times they can be dismissive and discourteous to women.

Non, you're a little too sensitive I think. I don't even keep up with oil changes on my wife's car. It's her car so her responsibility. She has to be responsible to keep up with the preventive maintenance. The car should be the responsibility of the main operator.

Sith, what do you think of the 2012 Jeep? I am very stoked about the changes. And tremendous HP/torque for a V6. In 3 or 4 years I want to buy a used 2012 Jeep Wrangler. HT with a 5 speed auto. Maybe the Sahara, maybe the Rubicon.

I suppose. But growing up I always took care of most of the small maintenance of all of our vehicles and really didnt think a thing about it. And when something larger had to be fixed I either drove it in myself or called someone to come look at it or called a tow truck to have it towed in extreme circumstances.Besides calling someone stupid for not doing something that you could just as easily do and are used to doing is well stupid :P

I don't change mine but about once a year...but I also don't drive very often.
I take it to a car dealership around here that does it for $12, plus checking fluids and topping them off if they aren't too low for nothing extra...takes like 20 minutes, and they have a nice waiting room with a big screen tv and vending machines :P
I used to help my Dad change the oil sometimes in my old truck or his vehicles (he still does his own and my Mom's), but I'd rather just spend $12...can hardly buy the oil for that.

That's why I have mine done, I use a coupon and it's always cheaper than doing it myself, and I don't have to deal with recycling the oil myself.

Sith is right about one thing. Changing oil on a low clearance car isn't worth the effort. I wish I could just crawl under there and do it myself without a stinking jack. I might just dig a 6 foot pit some day and have the poor mans lift.

I had read recently that the prevailing wisdom of changing your oil every 3000 miles is no longer necessary on newer cars. It's closer to 7500 miles, and up to 15000 or so if you use synthetic oil. For people like me and my wife, that average LESS than 10000 miles per year, this could mean an oil change just once a year. We also keep those little clear stickers in our window to remind us when the next change is supposed to happen, and we talk to each other about making an oil change visit when the due date or mileage is close. We go to the nearby oil change shop because our HOA doesn't like you changing your oil on your driveway where the risk of contamination exists.
As for the responsibility portion, if it's *her* car and she expects him to be changing her oil, she should at least be talking with him about it and not just assuming that he's done it for her without her knowledge. Of course, if Sith decides to be generous one day and just up and changes it, he should tell her so she knows it's been done. A good relationship is all about communication.

My wife keeps track of her mileage in her car, I might drive it once a week so she knows she needs to keep track of when it needs an oil change. I have long since stopped crawling under cars to change the oil and then dispose of it. I'll pay someone else to deal with that hassle.

Or if you know she's an idiot (just assuming this isn't the first time she's proven to be less than useless with something mechanical or common knowledge) you at least ask about it or something.
