There are always politics involved. I can point to a handful of politicians on the Colliseum commission who have pooh poohed stadiums in Los Angeles needed to lure an NFL team. They are getting greased.

Standing on principles in the face of reality results in no sports team for Seattle.

so what?

billionaires dont need handouts. Thats the reality.

If they stopped recieving hand outs, then they would build their own stadiums.

But they know eventually somewhere some dumb schmuck will give them hundreds of millions of dollars, they could have afforded themselves.

I'm not opposed to that. The major sports leagues are planned monopolies. Free market principles don't apply in a monopoly so most of the benefits of the free market simply aren't there. We could probably cut the ticket cost by 50% just by cutting player and executive salaries.

I like the idea of that but it would kill small market teams. So ultimately I'd have to be against it.

I'm curious why you think the economics of small market teams would change if the ownership switched from private to public?

If it wasn't in the cities best interest to have a sports team then none of them would pay for stadiums, but it is so they do. I see nothing wrong with sports teams extorting cities in to doing what they are clearly willing to do but don't want to if they can get away with it.

The Seattle government was short sighted and now they realize their mistake; the fact that they are so quickly willing to build a stadium for a hypothetical team proves the value of having as many sports teams as you can get in your town.

Half the teams in the NFL have a stadium predicated on the threat of moving the team to Las Angeles. Part of the reason LA doesn't have a football team is the lucrative stadium building capital it gives the owners.

In my mind it's like paying for museums and parks and public art work and public landscaping. They make a city more enjoyable to live in.

Small market teams are already having trouble competing. Small cities are struggling to keep cops on the street.

Small market teams are already at a disadvantage while the teams are privately owned. I don't see why the disadvantage would be worse if the teams were publicly owned.

We do not need to speak generically, we can pinpoint our argument: which small cities and teams are you specifically speaking about, Tyche? After we determine this, then we can do a cost-benefit analysis.

I am not going to go look up every team in every market in every sport to compile a list for you. Since I am in the majority then the onus is on you to convince me to your side to build up your numbers. I look at basketball and the same 6 large market teams dominate most of the championships. Same with baseball.

Some do, some don't. If the owner of a small market team is rich it has a serious advantage over other small market teams. Cities are never going to be "rich" so they will always be at a disadvantage over a privately owned team with huge pockets which is at least a possibility.

Name one team. We will take the argument from there. Forget Onus. You made a claim and cited a reason. Now we will correspond your fact pattern with reality. If we can generalize your fact pattern to other similar cities, then you have persuaded me. Im just keeping you honest, you know- make sure you are not just talking out yo ass.

Its so dumb. They left because govenment didnt buy them a new stadium

Years later after the government finally wakes up and they talk to a number of teams about moving they find out that all NBA teams also want new modern stadiums.

What kind of idiots are in charge here in Seattle?

Who cares. Most sports players are cry babies. Will act out if they dont get the extra 5 million dollars in their contracts. Over paid idiots playing a sport that means nothing at all. Get rid of all of it imo. Its worthless.

If the taxpayers are going to subsidize professional sports franchises, then why not own them? Why should we be making someone wealthy wealthier. Green Bay is our case model for excellence. Why not more Green Bay Packers?

Tyche, if the onus is on me, I just gave you an example, Green Bay- small city, great team. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Bay,_Wisconsin

(Almost) every town has a soccer team and stadium in Europe and few of them are taxpayer financed.

Why is America so much worse at sports management than Europe?

"We're America so we have to suck"?

Very patriotic of you Bonk.

P.S. Many European countries and cities used to give big subsidies like American cities do now. Most of them don't any more because they realized it's a bad system. Why can't America do the same? Why is Europe so far ahead of America when it comes to sports management?

"We're America so we have to suck"?

Very patriotic of you Bonk.

P.S. Many European countries and cities used to give big subsidies like American cities do now. Most of them don't any more because they realized it's a bad system. Why can't America do the same? Why is Europe so far ahead of America when it comes to sports management?

True. This is a great way for a city in the US to not have a sports team

Small means something different to you, Tyche. If San Diego, Toronto and Baltimore are small. I will agree to disagree. I still will cite Green Bay as a textbook success.

Small market Mo. Small market. How about this. I don't try and convince you and we stay on our sides on the issue.

Stadiums are used for a helluva lot more than just games. Football stadiums are used for what, 8 sundays a year for football?
They are always being rented out for concerts, conventions, rallies, etc. A tax payer owned stadium makes money for the community, if it is well managed.
There lies the problem.

Doesn't surprise me Paul-the-worst-libertarian-ever supports taxpayers financing stadium construction for private for-profit sports teams.

Oh I went a lot further than that. I said I wasn't opposed to public ownership of teams.

If you try to do a major construction project in the US a thousand groups will come out of the woodwork and start making demands and trying to get payoffs. A new stadium that should cost $250 million ends up costing $750 million. Team owners and the league would be happy to pony up the $250 million. The city and the state though are major contributors to the jacking up of the ultimate cost. Owners want them to kick in to help cover that. The investment by the government also serves as a motivator to clear away a lot of unnecessary red tape.

I was at Oregon State the same years as Payton. That was such a joy to see. My favorite players are the ones who play the hardest and the smartest.

Kemp and Payton were pretty much opposites. Kemp was all about athleticism. Payton could barely dunk. In fact I think I saw him miss more dunks than he made.

You think this is any different in Europe?

Just look at the hoops Arsenal had to jump through to get the Emirates approved.

The owners didn't pout. They got everything they wanted somewhere else.

The only people who didn't get what they wanted were the fans in Seattle.

I was in Denver in the late 90s when they were 'debating' whether or not a 1/2 cent sales tax should be levied in order to build the Broncos a new stadium (as if it was ever in doubt).

I remember one of the local radio honks saying, "Are you really gonna FEEL 1/2 a penny?"

STFU NOOB THAT ISN'T THE POINT!

I wonder where all the people went who said the Sonics would fail in Oklahoma City? They seem to be doing well as the Thunder.
