But when you do something in front of a sign that says not to and then cop an attitude with me, I don't react pleasantly. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one like this, so it's mind boggling that adults still try to bully people with abrasive attitudes.
I'm sure I mentioned before that I do security work for a skyscraper. I'm posted outside, I consider it the buildings backyard, no one comes out here. Well, there's no exit because it's a car ramp, so the building has a no smoking policy that extends to my entire area (about 50 feet of pedestrian access before the sidewalk ends in both directions into the street).
Normally, I get tourists coming in off a long train ride, they think it's an exit and light a cig as they walk. This is understandable and I often politely let them know theres no smoking, explain theres no exit and offer directions.
It fricken pisses me off when someone lights up right in front of the No Smoking sign though. Then I'm the asshole because this fiend only got one drag off. If I'm able to catch them before they actually light it too, I will, but 95% of smokers intentionally ignore me. At that point, it's all on them. When they try to reason or beg or bully me, I'm that asshole security guard that everyone hates. When they give up and leave, I give them a "hey, I tried to catch you before you lit up ."
I had a lady light up in the revolving door once. She was pissed when I made her put it out. But that's just ridiculous! Sometimes if they're nice and it's late, I'll tell them where they can stand to not get me in trouble, but only if they're polite and don't demand it.
The best is when these big shot guys in charge of multi million dollar accounts try to strong arm me. The madder they get at me, the bigger my smile gets. Nothing pisses them off more than the idea that they don't even have enough power to affect the lowly security guards attitude. Of course, they don't know I broke my teeth on Bat Day at Yankee Stadium.

Non smokers can be a real jerk. Telling some one they can't smoke when they are outside is ridicules. I could never be a cop, I have too much empathy for others.

There are plenty of places you can smoke around the building. I work in one that does not allow it. They opened the area for a specific reason and specifically said they didn't want people smoking there. I'm not going to lose my job (for not doing it) because someone feels entitled to smoke on private property. I'm very nice if they treat me with respect (not asking for much, just the common kind, like treating me like a human being and not some nitwit lackey they just boss around).
Smoke doesn't bother me, but that doesn't mean I'm blind to someone else forcing me to deal with it.

I'm not asking to be held in high esteem here, I just want basic human dignity. For some people, this is too much to ask for... It's not surprising that most of them smoke.
