You are talking a song with lyrics or do instrumentals count?

Either one is fine with me. Though some insanely-complicated classical guitar thing isn't exactly in the spirit of the thread.

By "solo", in this case, I just meant that it isn't the whole main part of the song (ruling out a lot of Satriani, for example)

One of my favorites (instrumental): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCTWhP6v9Ec

Listen from 1:58 to 3:05. The guy is just brilliant and it blends beautifully with the rest of the song.

It's hard to argue with Pink Floyd, as the song you listed is almost sublime (not even a Floyd fan either). If I had to pick, it's the solo in Sweet Emotion by Joe Perry.

I have always been fond of this one. Sorry there's no youtube available. It didn't get much airtime either so if you never had the CD or tape it's unlikely you've ever heard it. If you don't want to hear the whole song (recommended you do) skip ahead to the 3 minute mark.

I am a big Satch fan and it would be impossible to pick a single song, but for giggles I'll throw out this one.

Rubina

I pick that one because it is his tribute to his wife. After hearing it I always wondered what this woman looked like because the melody is beautiful so can only imagine what he sees when he looks at her.

I'll also echo Sultans of Swing, Mark Knopfler is a genius and that song is one of my all time favorites.

Of course, we have to consider this solo as well mischief

Steve Howe's solo in Queen's "Innuendo" is a favorite. Likewise the solo about 45 seconds into Yes's own "Soft As A Dove."

Just about anything on Clapton: Unplugged.

This isn't really a solo, but Martin Barre trades licks with David Pegg on bass and Ian Anderson on harmonica in this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiOWvkTjClQ

And I hate to add another Tull song, but Ian Anderson is rock's most underrated guitarist. His opening to "Salamander" is jaw-dropping: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5wZ99YgCeI

Glenn Cornick -- yet another Tull member who is one of the most underrated musicians ever. Barre is seriously underrated (check out Misere if you've not heard it); Ian is underrated on every instrument that is not a flute; Cornick is one of the true greats on bass; Clive Bunker was tremendous; and Barriemore Barlow was said, by John Bonham, to be the greatest drummer England ever produced.

Ian had a way of attracting tremendously talented people to him -- or, perhaps, inspiring them to play tremendously well. (Ritchie Blackmore said Tull members must "have memories like computers" to play Ian's music. He also, incidentally, called Glascock the best bassist in rock.)

Sultans of Swing IS a great all around guitar song.

"Wasted Years" - Adrian Smith has a smoking solo. Hell, almost ALL Adrian Smith solos
"Return to Serenity" Alex Skolnik(sp?) Testament

First thing I thought of was Dream Theater Under A Glass Moon. Then GnR and Sept. Rain. Then Free bird. Then Tull and Aqualung.

Then, of course, I remembered Eruption by EVH.

I was going to post one, but then I realized it was from a book, not a song.

Necrophagist - Fermented Offal Discharge

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccAs13M2dGI

The solo starts at 2:55. Technically speaking this blows all the other ones on this thread out of the water, no question. But soul is more important than technical skill, and other guitarists mentioned do have more of it, also no question

I can think of a few.

Stairway to heaven and Layla come to mind,

Lot of Led Zepplin songs come to mind because the band was trying to showcase Jimmy Page's talent/ Dazed and confused for example.

People.... Take the link and instead of telling people to fast forward to such and such time don't be a dick and just put &t=2m30s (Which would start the song at 2:30.) Seriously...

(I mad)

There is a reason I didn't get into teaching tongue  Typically I'm patient but how many links were on this thread with people saying, "Oh just fast forward here."  Spend 8 seconds figuring out where the solo is and add the 9 or less characters to the end of the link.

PS: Thank you Rho.

I'm sure most of us would have done that, except when listening to a 'solo'. it is best to listen to the whole song start to finish to really enjoy and understand the music. i simply highlighted a spot by telling you what time the solo starts. not meaning to start the song there, unless you like hearing mindless twangs or know the song off by heart
