Subject: Anyone been on an Alaskan cruise?
my folks and I have been wanting to go to Alaska for a while, and we have been looking around to see if we can find some.

My brother's family is also planning to go (2 adults, 2 children age 4 and 1), and maybe even a few other relatives if it works out.

We want to do something in the Inside Passage so we can maybe do a salmon fishing trip for a few of us (Myself, Dad, and Brother, maybe 1 more), but there would also have to be something the people who stay behind could do.

I've been looking on hotwire and a few random sites, and I'll probably look on the individual cruise lines too. I'm just looking for anyone who might have done a cruise to Alaska (or anywhere and knows a good place to look) who knows any of the things to do off the boat, or advice on which cruise lines to take.

Nothing ridiculous... $1500 per person or less for 7-9 days would be good. And if we could avoid needing to get a passport (leaving from Seattle instead of a port in Canada) that would be good too, although passports aren't too expensive if we have time to get them without expediting them.

We went one-way from Vancouver B.C. to Anchorage last June on Princess with stops in Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway and an entire day inside Glacier Bay.

Okay cabins were $1100, ones with a balcony were $1600. Great food and service, lots of available side trips. Plan on spending a whole lot of money each time the ship stops.

Dys and I are going on one in August, but someone else planned it, so we've really just been bobbleheads about the whole thing. "Yup, that sounds good! OK we're in!"

Sorry I don't have more info for you sad

Recommendation: sign up for the sit-down served dinners. You can hit the buffets anytime you like, but with the sit-downs, you'll get a whole week worth of stuff you normally wouldn't order at a regular restaurant and is really good.

my family went two summers ago.

It was fun, but the towns have all been taken over by the cruiselines, I think Skagway was the town that was the most fun, they had some cool stuff there, breweries and shows you can see about the gold rush, and a museum.

We didn't do any of the preplanned excursions, it was far too expensive for most of them.

If you go, you want to make port in Seward, NOT Whittier. Wait until Seward to do your fishing trips, and don't book it through the cruiseline, you can find plenty of guides online that are out of Seward for a fraction of the cost. Plan your trip for what kind of Fish you want to catch, we went in the middle of August, and we hit Silver season.

But the cruiselines are tricky, they'll try to whisk you out of Seward and to their exclusive (remote) hotel where you can't get back to town, so you might want to look into your own accomodations in Seward, and if you want to take the train, or some other way to Anchorage, I know there is a shuttle but I don't know the cost.

If you have a stop in Juneau, go to Mendenhall Glacier, you will not regret it. Don't do the preplanned excursion, there are bright "glacier" blue busses that stop every 30 minutes where the ships dock that take you up there and back at a fraction of the cost. We got to see bear cubs when we were there, catching fish and eating them, it was pretty awesome.

If you stop at Hubbard Glacier instead of Glacier Bay, consider it a good thing. Hubbard Glacier is freaking amazing, it's 8 miles across the front of it and you can get really close to the face.

There are two excursions I wish we had gone on. One is the longest zipline in the world, and the other is whale watching. We only saw a few spouts and tales during the regular cruise.

If you have any questions feel free to ask me, I have lots of pictures too if you want to see any of them.

This. I worked for HAP (Holland America - Princess) for the past three summers cooking on the train. Seward is absolutely beautiful and there's a ton of stuff to do around there.

I don't know much about the inner passage but if you decide to hang out in Seward or anywhere on the Kenai, PM me for more info.

Yes, Seward is a great little town, they have tons of stuff for women to do while their husbands are out fishing too! (The Flying Skein is a great yarn shop, and there are two other fabric shops for quilters) not to mention the best damn Fudge shop... called Wild Iris, my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

lol

yeah we planned to book the fishing trip ahead of time online...

another thing I was told to ask about is child stuff...do the cruise lines supply any car seats/cribs/etc? or do we need to bring our seat and pack-n-play? don't plan to do much of anything in a car, so we would probably just leave someone on the boat with the baby and everyone else go if it's too much of a hassle for the couple times we might.

I've been to Anchorage, Fairbanks, Homer, Seward(none on a cruise), Seward is the only city in Alaska I've ever been violently ill in.

That said - don't take a cruise, you miss out on so much of Alaska, and Seward is just a f***ing tourist trap.

I very highly recommend a motor home rental, driving from Anchorage to Homer(doing some halibut fishing there), driving up to Denali, taking the bus in and exploring a bit, and farting around.

Sure the cruise gets you some things - but there is just so much more to the place.

They might go to the same place, but a cruise is a totally different vacation from touring the interior.

no one going can take off more than 9 days (My mom is the most limited, as she has just started up a new clinic and is one of the head people and she gets too far behind if she misses), and that's really more than we want anyways...with 2 young kids, 9 days away from home is a long time, especially with the youngest being only 1 as of a few days ago. Someone has to be with her at every waking moment, and in the near vicinity 24/7.

Plus, as I said, it's 5 of us and 2 kids, minimum. We have 2 retired neighbors who want to go if they can, and I have 2 great Aunts/Uncles (as in 4 people) who want to go also if time permits...So anywhere from 7 to 13 people, and none of those options allow for RV's.

Also, one of the great Aunts will NOT go to Alaska in a vehicle. They went up there when my other great aunt and Uncle lived in Alaska (they are the other couple thinking about going, they lived there for 10 years...in Anchorage I think) and rented an RV...They were driving around sight-seeing on their last day there and went down a road they shouldn't have (was a small road with no barriers on the side and it got even smaller the further they went in)...They got to a point where they decided to turn around and found a wide area. They ended up backing up a foot or so too far and the road/ground underneath it broke up and slid down. They rolled backwards down about a 40 foot drop (not straight down, but WAYYY too steep for a vehicle to be on, especially that size), and flipped over 3 or 4 times. Luckily someone had seen them turn on the road who knew the area and decided to go check on them after not seeing them come back after a while.

so anyways, an RV would be out of the question for multiple reasons :P Plus, none of us have ever been on a cruise, and my parents have been to Alaska before in a car...That's not gonna happen again.

I have never been there on a cruise because my brother lives in Anchorage but i have heard the best thing to do is to get away from the cruise ship activities at Seward and do your own thing. There is a lot to do in Seward, if you have kids along, take them to the Sea Life Center. That's pretty awesome. Also, go in June or July - those are about the best months to visit Alaska but still bring along plenty of warm clothes. Oddly enough, many people don't bring warm clothing and it usually won't get over 70 degrees there in the summer. It also gets pretty cold on the water.

We are going to visit my brother in July this year. He and his wife are retiring in a year or so and will be moving to the lower 48. They are tired of the winters.

Took one southbound from Seward to Vancouver with stops through Glacier Bay, and stop at Juneau, Ketchican, Skagway.

9 days isn't enough to see everything you might want to see but a cruise is a good first taste:

Anchorage: Take a DC-3 flight up to McKinley--amazing
Kenai Peninsula down to Seward: One of the top 2 best drives I've ever had.
Seward: Just returned rental car and went to the ship
Glacier Bay: Just beautiful, probably would have been born when I was a kid.
Skagway: Can't for the life of me remember what I did
Juneau: Great little city. I visit state capitols and this one was decent but there's only 2 ways to get there and a cruise was more fun. I'll never forget the salmon caesar salad.
Ketchican: The lumberjack show is a must.
At Sea: relaxing and common to see whales.
Vancouver: A high end Seattle.
