Wasn't sure where to put this, hence the off topic tag.

I'm fooling around with Dragon Age 2 at the moment.

Now I know people will disagree and have troll opinions about this, but to me Dragon Age does have interesting lore. Without talking too much bullcrap, I wondered which fantasy MMORPG would come close to that sort of a Dragon Age MMORPG, assuming EA/Bioware would never develop (as if that would ever happen grin ).

There is a ton of scifi MMORPGs, including Star Trek, Star Wars and Eve Online; the latter being likely the greatest MMORPG-example for my beloved Homeworld(tm) ever since.

Now, there is an even larger pool on the fantasy MMORPG side if I were to be looking for a Dragon Age'esque MMORPG.

Which one do you think is a viable canidate?
If you can, try tossing in less popular MMORPGs (Whether f2p/asian/failprojects, whatever)

Please note that this is probably more about PVE than PVP, so let's not get deep into pvp talk. Roleplaying + PvE is actually more of a thing I'd be looking out for happy .

I think I can scratch a few:

~ Obviously, WoW does not really fit in.
The world seems too happy and dandy if you ask me. Missing the actual seriousness it once had.

~ Daoc, grandfather of PvP and actually neat world for tons of RP,
but it sort of falls short regarding a Dragon Age.

On the other hand,
maybe Rift is a viable canidate for a Dragon Age'ish MMORPG following the mentioned aspects?

It is a WoW-Clone, no doubt about that, but there seems to be more darkness into it.

Rift could possibly be a good candidate for what you are looking for, I just hope you are ready to run around closing rifts 24/7.

I enjoy RIFT. I think I'm just tired of the "WoW-genre", sadly.

Thanks, guys happy !

Agreed, the WoW-genre killed itself.

I think you guys are right about Rift. I know it is a clone, but it looks like you can do more in the game.

Dragon Age's lore and world and stuff has a nice dark taste, too. Kind of looking for an MMO that doesn't have that "all dandy and happy mood" everywhere. Elves in alienages, dirt kicked in their eyes - Very cool and new approach (probably not truly "new, but an interesting idea).

Honestly, I wish EA/Bioware would have done a DA mmo, even if it would have been a WoW-Clone (just like SWTOR), it would have been worth tons just for the lore. I know DA2 was dumbed down, but there's some great things about it after all.

Okay, enough ramblin' from me grin

I resubbed RIFT a few days ago. While I've only done PvP so far, that's all I really do, it's been fun. There's also a LOT of new additions to the game's UI/interface/options since the last time I played. Which is impressive, considering these things were already pretty awesome at release.

It isn't an MMO, but if you haven't played Dark Souls(XBOX and PS3) I would highly recommend it.

It lacks story pretty much all the way through, but the gameplay more than makes up for it.

Because there are tons of aspects that look the same. Nothing is really innovating. Although I have to admit, there is a tad of Age of Conan in it grin .

Videos and what I've seen so far looks very WoW stle. This is the case in Rift too, but Rift/Trion has taken something and added things from other games as well; like the Rift system itself, it resemmbles the Public Quest thing from Warhammer Online.

Don't want to go into detail with SWTOR though, it's a dead horse m8.

All the MMOs out since WoW are WoW clones, each with their own distinguishing features and twists, unless they are Korean clones. tongue

I eagerly await the next genre defining release.

I'm getting kind of bored with SWTOR. I have one 50 already and a 38. I'm struggling with the 38, not because I don't like the class, but it's just very linear and it has poor reply value.

Good news. You can play TERA Online today if you pre-order a copy tongue

I'm going to try out out a bit later tonight. I just hope the PvP is good, because SWTOR's was/is garbage.

The pre-order beta thingy just started a few hours ago.

What is TERA actually bringing new?

I have not had the chance to read any details on it other than some big boobed chick (which is fine with me).

On the other hand,
I always wanted to test that "Mabinogi Heroes" game that is from Korea but I never figured if I could have access to it due to the restrictive nature of registration. The videos on youtube featured some tense fighting on the PVE level and using things like tree logs and debris to throw at enemies.

Had anybody played that game somehow?

edit:
hmm, guess I should see for myself after all.

Looks like the Yurop-Release was in Oct2011.
Guess I will have a look happy !

I've only played for about an hour, and already a little bored of it.

I'm going to play it some more and hopefully try some PvP, maybe tonight.

One thing it's taking a step in the right direction for is more skill based combat. I'm playing an Archer and I need to aim/charge/target my shots, which is fkn sweet.

A couple of my early skills so far:

My basic arrow shot, which fires in the direction my "crosshairs" are. The shots lag behind if I try to turn and shoot quickly, so I need to aquire and aim at my target to hit it. It's pretty simple so far though, most of the monsters I've fought stand little to no chance of even hitting me. I've been hit like, twice.

A volley shot. Once I activate it, I need to hover over targets(up to 5 total) which makes them a target. Once I am ready I click my mouse button and it fires off a shot, hitting each mob I hovered over. Need to be in a fairly close proximity so far, 19m for pretty much all my shots.

Penetrating Shot(I think). I hold down whatever key I have it bound to on my skillbar, from there it charges(retarded quick right now, takes like 1s to fully charge) up. When I release the key it lets loose a shot hitting up to 4 targets in a straight line from me. This means you need to position mobs or get position on mobs to use this skill effectively.

The combat so far I like, but we'll see how it goes in PvP. I'm bored leveling already because it's just the same thing as usual. Generic quests.

How familiar are you with Turbine games? If your focus is on PvE and Roleplaying my first instinct is to direct you to LOTRO or DDO. Both have traditional high fantasy lorescapes (Tolkein / Dungeons and Dragons), from which Dragon Age is basically derived.

Hmm, I totally forgot about both tbh.

I think I will give DDO a try.

LOTRO to me never really fell into my sights because I assumed to be too "movie-like". I mean, of course JRR Tolkien is a god of the Elves/Dwarves etc mythology, but to me it turned me down.

Agreed, Dragon Age (and just about any other fantasy game/story) has the all the classic races, it's just that I like that dark aspect; like the elves being treated like second-class citizens, suppressed to hell by humans - and all the other stuff in that world; Magic being actually being a serious bane -- I'm not a sadist, but it brings a whole new light to the usually happy n dandy world.

Rift does seem to have a bit more of darkness.

But I will give DDO a try. Of course, I should probably try LOTRO.

By the way, what was the name of that asian grindfest MMORPG that featured mostly dark stuff, like undead, demonic infused playable classes, blood etc? Does anybody remember btw?

I hear what you are saying. Darker shades of fantasy are in. Just look at the popularity of like George RR Martin. Unfortunately I don't know many MMOs that manage to capture that. Age of Conan tried to go there, but in my opinion failed.

Could you be referring to Lineage the Blood Pledge or possibly Lineage 2?

Mmmmmh, not sure, I would have remembered if it were lineage, especially LA2 for the bouncy boob thing grin .
I could have sworn it was a Korean MMORPG and I recall a vnboard section, but it vanished afaik ever since the vn revamped the boards.

I also don't know if the game is actually f2p after all. I just figured I was in the openBeta xD I just remember it had to do with demon stuff. You infuse your character with these fantasy-surgical stuff etc. But other than that, it was a grind fest.

Agreed. AoC is dark (and f2p).

Okay, it brings us away from the Elves and Dwarves thing, which is also interesting, but I fear the game would spend too much time trying to beat each other up as it is pvp orientated. Ofc, I could join a PVE server, but I don't know if that exists ever since the fall of AoC and later change to f2p model.

Somewhere - and I don't believe what I am about to say - I am looking for a PvE hack n slay game.
One reason also is the situation that appeared through WoW's dungeon finder system; where joining a group has nobody talking, none of that "socializing" Blizzard been forcing us into all the time and where people just focus on doing the instance or leaving as soon as somebody stops for 1sec.
Want to get way from that too. grin

Nonetheless - So I see I need to try Rift, DDO/LOTRO and perhaps AoC again.

But about AoC, I have very very deep wounds about it. I bought the addon too and it sucked. :/
I can still hear Gaute laughing in my dreams.

Doesn't have to be "evil doers win" factor, but it is a different concept than everybody all dandy and stuff happy - and THAT is for kids, sorry hugs

I just liked how things were turned upside-down without all too much. Mages <- Bad, Elves getting sand in their eyes by humans etc.

And WoW actually had that too - or, let's say Warcraft III with the orc internment camps (spelling - I just totally misinterpet the word I mean).

And for old times speakin', DAOC wasn't that "bright" either, just saying grin (It's called Dark Age for a reason after all)
