... acquiring all of its IP, then proceeds to shut down the plant, kick 450 workers out of their jobs, and open a plant in Brazil.

Paulg is masturbating right now.

Makes sense, Brazil is a much more vibrant economy. And if you come up with a non NYT link I'll bother myself to read the story. The less clicks that propagandist war mongering rag gets, the better.

Go CAT. Stupid unions need to learn when to back down.

CAT had no intention of keeping the plant open. They only bought it for the patents.

Why not? How much were they making (including the benefit package) without the cut?

Edit: found it elsewhere. Wanted to drop workers to 16.50/hr.

That sounds perfectly reasonable for a job a monkey could probably do. Especially considering they are probably getting another $25/hr in benefits.

Apparently, the same could be said about your job.

I'm sure you'd line up to take a 50% pay cut to help your struggling business that reported significant profits survive, right?

laugh

If CAT got a single dollar in tax relief when they purchased that plant, they sure as he-double-hockey-sticks better be forced to repay every single penny.

The funniest part is, the Federal government is blaming the provincial government for letting it happen.

laugh

If the choice is $16.50/hr or $7 at McDonalds, I'd damn sure take it.

CAT could probably reopen the plant, union free, and fill every job at that new pay scale. Except they'd have to deal with the Union blockading them (and probably beating up workers). Easier to just move.

There is nothing about IP in the story. It is purely about wages and benefits.

The jobs are coming to a plant in Indiana at half the wages of the Canadian plant. There are also plans to build a plant in Brazil, but the main beneficiary is the Indiana plant.

Why should a company pay someone $30-$40/hour when someone else will do the same job for $15-$20?

Sucks for the workers, but they didn't have to turn down the contract, either. Now they have nothing.

they bought the plant to shut it down. The 15 dollar an hour is almost a non issue at this point.

It is pretty funny to see a company outsourcing jobs TO America, though.

IKEA is doing the same thing. It is cheaper to build their crap here at $8-$10/hour than pay the fat, happy and lazy Swedes to do the same and than pay to ship them over here.

Yup. Trailer. I paid cash for it. And unlike half of America, my net worth is greater than zero. We are eyeballing a house on 4 acres nearby, but not sure if we want to be $30k in debt.

$16.50 would be a big pay jump for me (about double). From talking to people who work assembly lines, especially high tech ones, if your IQ is over 70, the only difficulty is not going insane from boredom.

As to the guys at that plant. Yeah, they may be qualified for something other than McDonalds. But if it's a small town, 500 people is a big flood on the job market. So even if you land a "skilled" position, the competition for the spot is enough to drive the pay down to McDonalds levels.

Since minimum wage (full time, one person) is plenty for a couple people to live on, wages can fall to that level easily.

At my last job there was talk of pay cuts. I was the ONLY member of the command staff that spoke up and said the pay cuts should start at the top. There ARE people willing to give up money in the best interest of an organization. I don't see how "join a union" makes a person "qualified" for anything, tbh. Might as well join the Nancy Drew Fanclub, lol.

Also, people CAN get by on very little. They just have to learn that the world doesn't owe them cable, a cell phone, etc. It can be tough but it can be done. Doing without would actually be the BEST thing that could happen to a lot of people. I'm not advocating starvation, I'm simply saying that people have their priorities a bit jacked up.

I join our Canadian brothers in their outrage against the Canadian owners of this company that obviously sold them out for a fat profit.
They knew full well what CAT was after, and made the deal to kill your jobs anyways. This damages my view of Canadians being above greed. sad

True enough.

Now, say that to 450 workers with a straight face when your company reported record growth and profits.

If they received any kind of tax break they should give every dime back.

You can have free-trade and global-economies OR protectionism and closed doors.

Not both.

Hard, no, impossible, to compete against bulldozers made elsewhere by workers making 1/4 the wages/benefits (or less).

The times, they ARE a changin'.
