It's more of a rule than exception that any time he introduces even remotely likeable character to the story, he only does so to kill them couple chapters later.

I have found myself wishing that all the characters die in a fire.

I read the first two before giving up. Is anything actually happening? Or is it just a soap opera with blood and swords?

The best thing about his books is he tricks the reader into thinking the story is about the people involved when it's really about what happens when the world faces a threat that people are too self absorbed to notice in time.

I love that part. The fking worlds about to get over run by undead and the humans start wars with themselves.

Perfect.

I found that early on I had decided the good guys and the bad guys but then in the end it just had guys. Some really great characters, John Snow is your typical fantasy hero whereas Tyrion is much more interesting

I actually liked the third one perhaps the best of the whole series.

The fourth declines, and the fifth is just ridiculous. His biggest problem is getting sidetracked and introducing brand new characters that no one cares about and who never go anywhere. That whole crap with the "Drowned Gods" assholes was incredibly boring and stupid. By the fifth book, I found myself skipping pages at a time.

The only character that makes me cringe a bit when she gets a chapter is the Maid of Tarth. Kind of feel sorry for her, but, what a tedious story line!

The characters have all turned awful. Snow is the only protagonist left in the series.

What bugs me about it is that it is told as a heroic fantasty, with all the elements and a cast of characters you are rooting for. They are cool, have cool names and even have wolves.

Then they all go through a bunch of crap and die. You're pushing for them all along, thinking, "any minute now they will turn and fight" and they never really do. The damn dwarf is the best character.

I think he's too in love with the sound of his own voice and it's lame because he basically never finishes anything.

Tyrion is a great character. I like Arya better, though. Daenerys is pretty interesting, too, though her story line has been way too clogged up. Sansa is quite an interesting person. She has been slowly, slowly developing as a character. Our view of Jamie has probably shifted as much as any character in any novel, and, the shift has been pretty realistic.

Really, there are a lot of interesting characters. For me, the two dullest characters have been King Robert, who is a Henry 8th clone, and his wife, who is a Lady Macbeth clone. Stereotypes without much individuality. Catelyn's sister, I forget her name, and especially, her son, are incredibly annoying, as well.

I didn't mind the Iron Island stuff. The characters and interplay are interesting and it's pretty realistic that that kind of stuff will happen when the Great Houses start fighting each other. I'm not in any hurry for the series to end and wouldn't mind it going on for a few more books. That is, if Martin could put them out in a reasonable time frame. Something he seems incapable of. I'd be more than happy for a good book a year for the next 5 or more years.

The last book was a lot of nothing.

At best a bunch of middle parts to a story.
