19. Atlanta, GA
Birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the civil rights movement, Atlanta boasts a tumultuous past, which might explain the city's current spirit of optimism and low rates of anger and stress. This trifecta of healthy mind-and-mood factors helped rank Atlanta the 19th youngest city in America. If the population could just lower its rates of diabetes and inflammation, they may nudge their way up on next year's list.

I lived in the Ritz Carlton Hotel for 9 months in Buckhead. Atlanta rocked.

I loved Atlanta when I went to school there back in the early 90's. Great town, filled with fun people and an interesting and varied cultural and social scene. I visited recently however....and it's gone waaaaaaaay downhill. Congested, ugly, depressing, and full of broke drunk people. No night life except crappy bars and police were everywhere constantly, was like living in occupied war zone. WTF?

I live fairly close to Knoxville and it doesn't surprise me it is the worst city for health. Haven't seen so many fat, drunk, smoking, belligerent red necks...since last time I visited Disney World.

Knoxville, TN
It's a hard knock life for Knoxville, TN, which is in the bottom spot no thanks to high rates of drinking, smoking, stress, unemployment, low income, and -- not surprisingly -- the least amount of optimism. When money is tight, an inexpensive hike in the Great Smoky Mountains or a visit to the Market Square Farmer's Market could do wonders. “You can be just as healthy in Knoxville as you can in Denver," says Dr. Roach. "You just have to work a little harder at it."

I stayed in that exact hotel when I used to visit here in the range of 10-15 years ago...

I am guessing you haven't been here in 10-15 years...

Yeahh... I don't know of too many other places where "young" is defined as being "under 40." And their saying "angry" and "unmarried" makes you older = confused

I can see SF beating NYC in the rankings but hardly anywhere else.

But they were spot-on for Kansas City:

"Did you know that Kansas City ignored prohibition in the 1920s? Well, alcohol is definitely an aging factor for female residents of KC today. Not enough orgasms per week for men and not enough satisfying sex for women are also contributing to older RealAges in this Midwest town, as are smoking and not eating fruits and veggies. "

Pretty much. KC = married at 20, divorced at 35, and diabetic at 50.

These studies are all flawed because it depends on what they study and what they dont study. SF is also a binge drinking city and it's a singles city for the most part, so obviously it's "younger" but being single and binge drinking wont keep you looking young and healthy.

There was another study that put SF as one of the top binge drinker cities and that was actually what I've noticed too when I've gone down to the bars over there. There are a lot of fresh out of school kids living in that city.
