The only thing that I know about it, is that some pro SC2 players play it in their spare time.
Any advice for my first few matches to not embarrass myself too badly?

Don't be over agressive, play it safe untill you get a feel for what the other team can do.
Do a few bot matches to find what champion type you're comfortable with

There are a lot of things to learn. Curret meta is 1 top 1 jungle ap(magic) mid ad/support bottom.
One of the most important things you need to know is focus on last hitting. Care on pushing the lane unless you have good map sight.

Jump head first into it. It's the best and fastest way to learn. Care about the intricacies of gameplay later if you like the game.

I jumped straight into public games knowing absolutely nothing. It's easy to pick up on the fly.
Here's one extremely important tip: most of the time you shouldn't attack or use abilities on enemy monsters until they are 1 hit from dying. So just zig zag around a monster that's almost dead, and when you think he has 1 more hit to go then you finish him off.

League of Legends is basically about projection of power. This is how good teams win and lose the match.
Minions are basically irrelevant power-wise. Towers are large sources of non-moving power early on, and become increasingly irrelevant.
So really the only power are your team's 5 champions, and you project by moving around. You most easily win by making the fight unfair in your favor, get a 2v1, 3v2, 5v4, etc. If one champion dies in vain late-game, the enemy team can often easily push towards a victory. Laying down vision wards is one of the most useful things you can do, to avoid or set up gankings.
The pro teams are very good at avoiding such unfair situations, so then you get team battles where all 10 champs are constantly re-positioning a little. Then one team sees an opportunity to jump on an enemy champ and kill quickly, or to just deal damage faster than the enemy team (some champs are better initiators, some are better at area of effect damage or stuns, etc.)
Overall I find the high-level skill is too much about clicking 50 times a minute and being hyper-aware CONSTANTLY, both of your immediate surroundings and the map as a whole. Knowledge leads to wins via ideal projection of power. What your toon does individually (feats of prowess) is of comparatively little importance.

Level 6 with a dozen or so wins against beginner computers.
I mainly play as Ryze or Soraka(leaning towards this one as my friend plays as Ezreal and supposedly they compliment each other).
Now that I understand more... any more tips?

Bots are nothing like the real game. League changes a lot once you get level 30 and play draft games. So your early games are going to have really wonky team comps. Soraka is good. Just remember your job is to support. You don't steal cs from your lane mate. Buy gold per second items and keep things warded. Ie dragon, tri brush etc.

Yeah I watched a few hours of pro matches last night.
I've only been in one game where we killed Baron, and we've never killed Dragon.
I generally try to cut in and clear out the little ones myself but only because it's easy gold.
I haven't really figured out which ones to make sure to farm yet.
edit: And with that area attack that I have I'm a kill stealing fool, though not intentionally... are you saying I shouldn't do that?
Why not? Why does it matter who gets the kill as long as person is dead...

dragon is something you need to kill every time it is up, once you can do it reliably (dont wipe out your own team trying to do it too soon, i mean). its more gold than a tower kill, to everyone on the team. baron is fine but in most of my games it has rarely been the deciding factor. usually by the time a team can get away with baron... they already have the game in the bag pretty much. i have seen it used to bait teams into a fight though. thats a bit risky but it can pay off big.

on soraka your role is generally to support your team and you gain money from assists and gold generating items, rather than from killing minions and players. for example if you lane with ez.. you stand there and protect him with heals and the armor buff, restore his mana and harass the enemy with the E, and you can spam the Q to reduce minion hp and harass a little as well, but you want him to get the last hit on everything, because he will make MUCH more of an impact with better items than you will.

It matters a bit who gets the kill. You want your carry to get fed if possible. Dragon should be taken but you need to do it at the right time or you will get raped. Do dragon after a successful bot or mid gank.
