Oh well, forgot to mention I'm putting another 2gb from my other computer so it will be total of 6. If I remember right Windows 7 32 bit which I use can't use more than 6gb so anything more is a waste.

What would you recommend for the hard drive?

Purpose... I was trying to build a top of the line because I just got a fat check and I want a new bad ass computer.

Nailer2357 posted:
As Shazami said, you should get more than 4 gigs of RAM. Also, invest in an SSD (at least a 64 or preferably a 128 gig one to use as a boot drive / hold the OS and frequently used programs)

What is an SSD and why are they good?

2600K is overclockable, 2600 is locked and cannot be overclocked.

You are getting a $300 mobo and a $200 power supply. Buy at least 8 GB of RAM, it's cheap. Also unless you need every single bell and whistle on that motherboard, you could save $100 and go with the next one down.

That power supply is also way overkill unless you are going to add more video cards down the road.

I would avoid the VelociRaptor drives these days. They aren't bad, but there are several single platter 7.2K RPM 500 GB+ drives that are cheaper and faster.

He makes sense. Most of these people know more than I do, but I would back off the $500 gpu for more ram and you can always upgrade later when the price of that card drops.

Personally, I would hold off on the SSD until they get larger, cheaper, and more reliable, but I will be alone on that.

Get a cheap ssd as your boot drive. You can get a 60ish for 50 bucks. Then a decent 7200 1tb drive for storage.

And personally I would go with an amd setup. Sandybridge has gotten really mixed reviews and amd is cheaper with better quality imo.

i do have a couple of them and they are shocking fast.
but i have already experienced a couple failures of them.
yes it is a pita..but..they are so much faster than a platter drive..
at least all the ones i ever had.

but.. in hindsight, i could do without and save the money.

Omg $600 for a video card, so ludicrous it'll make you slap yo momma!

If you're spending that much on a video card, why not buy some more expensive RAM?

And I wouldn't buy a 60gb SSD for $50, that sounds suspiciously cheap.

That size SSD should be around $100....

The limit on 32-bit OS is 4GB memory. Plan accordingly.

And +1 for the SSD idea.

It's performance is better than the 10k drives, and you get a lot less heat/noise.

Damn only 4gb, ok. Would it be worth the extra couple hundred to buy windows 64 bit and a lot more ram or not really?

I know nothing about the ssd so I'm iffy on those right now.

Ok I'm thinking about adding an SSD drive. So I should put like windows and the things I use the most on that?

Can anyone recommend a good brand?

Also, I'm thinking 128GB. Or are do they fail enough that I should go with 64gb?

intel or samsung

don't buy OCZ or Crucial as they tend to have a relatively high failure rate

go the next step down in video cards...maybe 2 steps (the 560 will play anything on the market afaik at max settings). get windows 7 64 bit...there are ways to get it free which work perfectly well if you aren't against being a pirate occasionally...just find the ones with good reviews.

get yourself 8gb RAM if you do that, no need to get more than that, it won't be useful.

could also drop to an 800w PSU and be fine, just pick a good quality one with multiple 12V rails on it.

I can't comment on SSD or not, as I have never had one...but I have heard they fail a lot compared to platter drives. if you don't get a SSD, stick with a 10k RPM drive as the main drive and use a slower drive as your storage drive.

case looks good, lots of positive reviews on it.

My budget is whatever I want, but I'd like to keep it around like $2,000 max (A little higher wouldn't be out of the question though if it's worth it). While the contest sounds like a good idea (except for the prize lol) I was hoping to have everything ordered today.

Oh also I forgot I need to get a new monitor. How does this one look?

Since money isn't really an issue I was wanting to get the best video card there is so I won't have to upgrade for quite awhile, I might consider going a step down though. I don't have a problem being a pirate, I don't have a burner though. I guess I could install windows 7 32 bit on my new computer, get it, burn it, then reformat but that's too much trouble imo I'd rather just buy the 64 bit.

get yourself 8gb RAM if you do that, no need to get more than that, it won't be useful.

Thanks, that's what I thought is that I wouldn't be able to utilize the full 16gb memory though I was very tempted. Anyone else have an opinion on this?

could also drop to an 800w PSU and be fine, just pick a good quality one with multiple 12V rails on it.

Alright thanks, I'll probably drop to an 800. Since I was getting the top of everything I figured it would take up quite a bit of power.

I can't comment on SSD or not, as I have never had one...but I have heard they fail a lot compared to platter drives. if you don't get a SSD, stick with a 10k RPM drive as the main drive and use a slower drive as your storage drive.

Yeah that's what I noticed, plus I want to make sure I have some room to work with since video card is going to be massive and I either read in the reviews or in the facts something about it having a lot of room. In the lastcomputer I built, I got a GeForce GTX 285 and it almost didn't fit in the case I got

Well I decided to just buy everything sometime tomorrow since it's the weekend so I'd still love to hear some ideas.

get that Silverstone Fortress case I linked to back on page 1, it'll really help keep everything cool. Help protect your valuable long term investment.

While it looks nice and though I said money isn't much of a problem for the computer, I don't like the idea of spending $250 on a case.

I would absolutely recommend getting an SSD if you're building a new computer, also how come you are going with a 32 bit OS in 2012? That might be worth an upgrade but it's up to you.

Also the i7 isn't that much better than the i5 except if you make a lot of use of hyper-threading, but again, up to you. At least read up on it if you have the time: http://www.brighthub.com/computing/hardware/articles/48391.aspx

As has been said, go with 8gb and Windows 7 64bit home as a minimum. This incremental cost is negligible. I haven't found anything that won't run on Windows 7 64 bit.

It really does make sense to go with a SSD if you can budget it. Try to get a 256GB as a minimum. I just have a 70GB ssd for the o/s and I wish I had spent the bucks and got a bigger one when I bought my system. Sure the o/s runs fast, boots in less than a minute, o/s updates rarely take more than two. But everything else I do gets slowed down by the 1T hard drive I have everything else other than the O/S on.

Exactly, which is why I can not justify the cost and imminent failure and repurchase cost just because the computer boots fast. I can wait an extra minute, big whoop.

Dont worry I will give my opinion anyways.

Ewww hyper threading. That's what screws my current computer up every time I reformat or the bios gets reset. It freezes before it can get to desktop at random times. Disabled the hyper threading and voila, no more freezing. Is that really the only difference between i7 and i5?

But yeah I'm going to get windows 7 64 bit. I'm still not sure on the SSD though. I would love to get one to see the speed but the reliability is holding me back.

one difference betwen i-5 and i-7 is the i-7 is a new socket form factor.

so if you decide to buy a i-5 socketed motherboard dont expect to upgrade to a i-7 or newer later, without a new mother board.
