if you had an employee that spent sayyyy an hour or so every day wandering around and talking to others, not doing their work (cause we all know there is always work the needs doing) would you keep them? or fire them?

it is almost an every day occurrence. not something that is only now and then.

It would depend upon a lot of other factors, like how good they are at their job when they are doing it, how they affect moral and how well liked and respected they are by others, and why their manager let them get away with it long enough for me to notice it.

what field are we talking about here

the answer generally would be no. deal with him, talk with him about his behavior, give a formal warning and also document the meeting you had with the employee. tell him the consecuences he may face if his behavior does not change. after that, if it persist, give him the boot

now if he is a great employee that does all task and goes beyound what is expected, lifts the morals of other employees while not interfering with there work, then it can be a two bladed sword since you are allowing one employee that right while a troubling employee that does the same thing. double standards

Important question.

Depends on the job type, the field, what they're walking around talking about...

I'm asked to go around talking to random employees for an hour or so a day so that I can keep an understanding of how the factory works and keep on good terms with people that I might need to talk to in the future about purchasing related problems.

*shrug*

I had a guy working for me once that spent 3 hours a day outside smoking. When people complained about it, I would point out that he had the highest customer compliment rating in the company, did more work in 1 hour than most did in 4, always was on time, dressed correctly, never called in sick, always came in when called, was a great guy, and his department was the most profitable, well ordered and on task in the company and that I didn't give a damn how many breaks you take as long if your job was being done perfectly.

Then I would tell him he was a stupid asshole for making everyone else look bad. Eventually when I moved on to run a new office, I promoted him to replace me. He had the most important skill a manager will ever need. The ability not to fix stuff that isn't broken and to not give a damn what everyone else thought about the way he did his job.

I think it depends on how the person is. Some people do their work faster than others who might not talk for an hour but they could be sand bagging. I don't think someone should be punished if they are quicker at getting what they need to get done than someone else

Sounds like you just don't like the person. That happens.

At one place I worked with a guy who showed up late every day, left early, spent half the day smoking, and played queue toggle so he didn't have to take calls even when he was at his desk, instead he texted people and talked loudly while the rest of us worked.

According to the management there he deserved the same crappy raise we all got, and kept his sweet shift even though he never once showed up on time for it. (Him and one other guy had the 8am shift, I eventually got a 10am start and was typically the first one logged in and taking calls. WTF. Eventually they bumped the other early starter even though he did as much work as I did and I got the early shift because they were tired of NOBODY being there for the first hour of our coverage. Then we all got laid off. LOL. Gods that place sucked ass to work for, getting laid off was a huge friggen relief. I had another job lined up, and started before our layoff date. Suckers.)

doesnt set a good example for other more disciplined employees thats for sure. they will think the mgr is a pushover and will eventually try their own brand of bs rolling in the workplace.

if there is an expectation and general knowlege that "we don't do that here sam" and they have been dealt with progressively, adios.

As a roofing foreman, I gave one warning and if they continued to wander, I call the office and they get a check at the end of the day. They don't just do less than the next guy. They slow down everyone they talk to.
