Ok so I've always built my own computers. I recently came into a good amount of money and I am buying a new comp. I'm looking at parts at newegg right now but I'd also like to see some of the websites that are legit and good prices for building your own.

they don't all have crazy lights on them...
I like having them on mine though, saves me from having to turn the lights on in the room in the middle of the night if I wake up or something and need to get up...don't have to blind myself :P (my bedroom is the next room over, so I walk from it to the stairs to go down).

I used them for my last comp, and so did both of my brothers. I just got sick of using newegg because I would get a doa piece on each new build. That got to be a huge pain in the ass.

My only issue with buying pre-builts is as soon as you start customizing the basic build to tweak it to your tastes, the added costs make it unworthy. However, there is no "tech support" when you build your own and you have to do your research to know which memory can go on which motherboard, what video card can fit inside what case, and all that. Then, when you turn it on for the first time, if something smokes, it's *your* problem and no one elses.
All that said, I've built my own computers ever since my first 'pre-built' Packard Bell machine and have never blown anything up or had any piece of hardware die on me, ever. The thing is, you either have the confidence to build and you know a couple buddies that can help you if needed, or you don't. If the whole thing is just too daunting, and you've got the cash, then there's no guilt in buying an HP, or Dell, or one from whoever. Just don't buy Cyber Power, even if they still are in business.

My Antec 300 case has two tiny blue leds and that's it. No fan lights, and none of that other crap. Only problem is that the stock Antec fans aren't super quiet.
The case wasn't expensive either. It's tight, but it's Antec so the design is ok, and doesn't have a million sharp edges inside.

lights on a case bother me to no end. I need to have darkness in my room when I sleep. Those blue LEDs on a case, even if its just one tiny one, lights up my entire room.

You can still pick parts and have someone build it for you if you want the warranty etc...
NCIX is where I bought my AMD 2500+ and it's still running 6 years later
My new one I had built at PCcyber really happy with it many of the parts I see people post here.
Just don't go Dell/HP from Bestbuy or something plenty of good computer places around yellowpages.ca/com can help find them.
Pick everything out on Newegg/Tiger Direct these two are my favorites since they generally have good sales then use the quotes to barter with at a local place where you can pick up the computer.
If you don't mind having it shipped buy on-line but you run the risk of having to RMA stuff if it breaks during shipping. Kind of a hassle but it can be cheaper. I prefer to just price match many local places will do it with a quote # from someplace reputable.
Plan to spend $1500 if you want something top end, HDD's added about $100-150 to the builds I used to see posted.
Mine was $2k but I paid in funny Canadian money and since we buy from the states it was a bit expensive.

Overclocked CPU to 3.5Ghz nothing else OC and no voltage increases and it runs everything flawlessly for the most part I am having some issues with AMD drivers for my ATI card but other then that it runs well so far. Maxxed out AA/AF ultra/high settings whatever it allows normally.
I see people buy huge amounts of RAM but most things don't take advantage of over 4 with 64-bit and around 2 with 32-bit programs so why buy gobs of memeory unless you are going to mutli-box games or are going to run 5 videos and music all at once or something. And PSU's that are 850 watt + only reason to do that is if you are going to run a very high end card or Xfire/SLI two very high end cards.
Reaserch what your cards draw those are the big hogs and the other components to a lesser degree and buy 100 watts more then you need it's an easy way to save cash. Buy RAM that is good to OC a bit that'll save money. The new I series CPU's all seem to be good to OC so buy a good MOBO to go with it that has good bios setting to play with some research is worth it.
I5-2600K seems to be pretty popular right now if it's in budget get a 2gig video card worry about the 3gig cards later when they come down a bunch. I don't think it matters Nvidia/ATI both have thier issues from what I've been reading. It might pay to reasearch some of the games you play or plan to head to the support forums and read a bit to see what troubles they have. For instance I think COD/BF work better with NVidia physics tweaks.
Whatever you do use the large address patcher on the .exe to make games use more then 2gigs I think it forces 32-bit games to use 4gigs that helps things running smoother.
I'm still trying to find ways to optimize games to run better under my quad core most games are messed up and are only single core or maybe dual but I find it funny that I have 8 (virtual) cores and I still experince some slow down here and there. Although I average 40-60fps sometimes it dips into the 20's with a few games maxxed out and it can be annoying.
Ram quantity doesn't seem to be as important as CPU speed good memory speeds HDD seek times and video capacity. Tho everything runs pretty good with 1GB ramn if I could get a better card I would just to future proof. Games are getting more intensive all the time.
The biggest difference I think would be if they programmed for 64-bit and offered a 64-bit version to people then we could use some of our hardware to better advantage... Still waiting tho lol
Hope some of this helps.
EDIT: to add that you should get a N type adapter/router if you have high speed internet it helps a ton to reduce lag in games and seems to provide a more stable connection at least for me using DSL again but having no troubles (not much) since I upgraded my adapters/router.
