Probably the best review I've gotten yet - team player, communicative, supportive, natural leader, rises above and beyond, continues to exceed all expectations were all phrases that were in in the formal review.

I was also told my promotion was denied in the same meeting. But that we would review that in a couple of months.

This is the third year in a row I've been told that. plain

I'm waiting to hear back about a job I interviewed for. Dear God I can't wait to quit.

Can't blog about this anywhere else.

What sucks about your job?

Do you get to keep a signed written copy of your review?

Didn't you say that you were worried your employer might try to blackball you if any inquiries came up from prospective employers?

and duh.... sorry... congrats on the great review! Sucks about the promotion though.

Companies that blow off employees suck almost as bad as the ones who give out promotions instead of raises. The thing that really sucks about my job is firing people, when I had to lay people off a couple of years ago I thought I was getting an ulcer, screwing with peoples lives isn't fun.

I have copies of all my reviews. Whether or not I'm supposed to have them, I don't care. I do.

And yes, I am worried they will blackball me. But I am expecting a call back from the prospective employer. I heard from them a week ago - they wanted to confirm it was ok to check references, which is always a good sign.

It's just a waiting game at this point, which is why I can't really talk about this publicly. But I'm frustrated, I needed to vent somewhere.

And Bonzo, they are actually doing both. When I say 'my promotion was denied', I mean the hard one that results in more money. They've promoted me to new titles and responsibilities with no new money a few times now.

Well good for you man. Good luck! There is a time to be mercenary about your career and a time to be loyal... it sounds like you know the difference and like you're making the right choice.

I read an article somewhere and it said loyalty towards employers was going down. It used to be common for a person to work for one company for his whole career but know people plan on having many employers and view companies as stepping stones. Companies like your are the reason why.

Yup. It's kinda sad. I went there to avoid that with every intention of focusing on long term. It's why I've put up with it - I believed it would pay off.

Back in 1999 when I had my first "big time" real job, they were discussing the reduction in "loyalty" to employers. At that point, my department head, a 25+ year employee at that time was telling me that they only hoped for 4-7 years out of any given person they hire. It's not news. Loyalty schmoyalty. The only reason to consider loyalty imo is if there's a pension involved - and a good one. Otherwise, a 401(k) rolls over like a good dog and changing employers is often the best way to actually get promoted.

When they killed the pension system for most people in this country in favor of 401(k) plans back in the mid 80's, they killed any reason for loyalty.

Now your employer expects you to jump at better offers, so your only option is to find one willing to pay to keep you....or jump at the better offers.

Probably a union shop so they can't promote him just because he is good. They'll give the promotion to someone who gets barely passing reviews who has been there 6 months longer. Union lovers are unanimous in their belief that bosses are incapable of determining who is doing a good job.

I wouldn't mind so much if they would pay for some actual training osemthin, but I've been keeping things running mostly on google fu, and eventually that is going to fail me.

Now I need to come up with an awesome server solution for this tiny company, not knowing much about servers or solutions grin

its often the only way to get a raise too.
when i was wrenching cars, i never spent more than 4 years at one place.
id take a stack of old ROs and say this is the revenue i do in a day/week/month, etc. and then tell them how much i expect to be paid.
if they laughed, i got up and walked out.

now i make too much money to be able to do that and i have to sit and wait patiently for the opportunity to present itself while secretly schooling myself and studying new material.

the great thing about being a good mechanic is that once you can trouble shoot a complex system, you can go anywhere and work on any complex systems with just a little reading of base material.

While I agree that this is commonplace, it is also the sign of bad management. You can get away with it in lower end jobs, but the higher skilled the job, the less effective it is.

Right now, due to the economy, most employees have little choice except to take the abuse that management is putting on them (and management is taking advantage of it as much as they can). They are gritting their teeth and waiting for their chance to leave. That does not bode well for the companies that are treating their employees that way.

When economic growth finally strengthens and employers start having to actually compete for employees, the abused employees will tell their employer FU and go work someplace else.

That's all kinds of scary. Outlook DB - not an exchange server? worried

And the solution to your server problem?

Vmware may be too expensive, but server virtualization is the solution generally speaking. One physical server can be used to launch\manage hundreds of virtual ones. My current company has saved millions doing this.

I talk about my job and my state constantly and have since I started posting here 8 years ago. I don't assume people care, but it's information that is definitely hard to avoid.

And your analogy is terrible, like normal. It's like saying you support getting shot by your neighbor if you are for the second amendment.

What part of 'I interviewed at another place and am days away from an offer' do you not understand?

I should quit in protest just to prove I'm Mr. Independent?

You make no sense here.

I got an awesome review also. They did give me a raise, but it was only like 3% so it was pretty much like nothing (imo). Though I am not pissed off enough to leave my job (I actually like it). But, I will be more than likely leaving sometime this year or at least change job functions inside the company.

My review keeps getting pushed back and it's annoying me. 3 times my manager has had to bump me to later in the week and now it's meant to be next Tuesday

I work for one of the largest financial services firms in the country (7000+ employees , 400 partners) and I have ownership of a process that noone else knows or understands anymore. So I'm really far down the ladder and end up accountable to the CEO and Chairman on contracts worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Because of the level of accountability everyone else is too scared to help, including my owner manager and dept head.

If you know anything about partnerships as well you know that politics are a massive part of the culture so the worst part about my job is stakeholder management. I'm not exaggerating either, we're talking about perceived meanings of me addressing one person before another in an email or CCing one person but not another.

You know what to do Tali. The only suggestion I have to offer is, and I mean this quite seriously, learn Mandarin, become fluent in it, and learn how to communicate technical information in Mandarin. It would be helpful to Mrs Tali as well and the two of you learning it together would make it much easier. Other than that I wish you good fortune.

What sucks about your job?

Handling IT crises because the company can't/won't pay for either modern equipment or professional support. I'm at work right now attempting to save 'the' outlook database (which I know jack about) from a corrupted HDD that is about ten years old on a server running Windows 2000 (which I know jack about).

I wouldn't mind so much if they would pay for some actual training osemthin, but I've been keeping things running mostly on google fu, and eventually that is going to fail me.

Now I need to come up with an awesome server solution for this tiny company, not knowing much about servers or solutions grin

That's all kinds of scary. Outlook DB - not an exchange server? worried

And the solution to your server problem?

http://www.vmware.com/

Vmware may be too expensive, but server virtualization is the solution generally speaking. One physical server can be used to launch\manage hundreds of virtual ones. My current company has saved millions doing this.

Yeah, I ended up renaming the corrupted directory and forcing creation of new .edb files which screwed all the inboxes, but the demand was having e-mail available immediately and screw the consequences. I'll keep trying to find ways to tease the data into somewhere somewhat less corrupt, but I have low expectations.

Thanks for the vmware link, I'll take a look at it in detail. I took the quick survey and was a little put off by the expectation of the number of employee it is set up to serve. We are down to ten, which is somewhat less than 100. sad We've been considering trying out a regular desktop because only three of us put any real demand on the server at the moment, and of course a desktop is much cheaper.

Good luck with any new job, staying with the (suckass) paycheck is clearly the best move until you have another job, but that doesn't make it less painful.

Smelly - wow that would drive me crazy. I'd probably get fired because I just wouldn't care enough to worry about that as long as I was good at the actual work part.
