heard this on the radio the other day, and saw some so called highlights of the end of a game.
hosts admittedly hate the NBA and consider it useless for the first 3.5 quarters.
they went on to criticize many games being boring as hell at the end due to the instant foul strategy dragging the final minute to a screeching halt.

so my question to the NBA faithful, how often does that strategy work?
even when i somewhat followed the NBA, i used to just flip to something else and check the score later, but i never remember seeing or even hearing that it worked out.

People who say that NBA games are boring and pointless for 3.5 quarters aren't NBA fans at all, end of story.

That's like saying Hockey isn't worth watching until the 3rd period. Football isn't worth watching until the 4th. Baseball isn't worth watching until the 9th. These people aren't fans.

To address your question, the NBA can be frustrating to watch when too many fouls are being called. But to me, it's no worse than Football with its 10 seconds of action then 3 minutes of commercials. Real fans put up with the lame parts of the game.

If you want the closest thing to non stop action there is in sports, watch Hockey. It's really good about having continuous action and very few breaks between.

Oh, sorry. If I'm guessing what you mean correctly by "instant foul strategy", Yes that strategy works sometimes. FT shooting is a legit part of the game and teams live or die at the FT line all the time. It's the reason players like Rondo and Dwight aren't as effective as they could be...they're two of the suckiest FT shooters in the NBA. Hack-A-Shaq is a strategy that famously worked and Hack-A-Dwight is a strategy that many team defenses employ now.

If a game is close till the very end, FT shooting often slows the final minute down, but it also allows for some exciting last minute plays as well as overtime situations so it all kinda balances out at the end

But it makes normally dominant big men like a Shaq or a Dwight much less potent in the final minutes of the 4th quarter. Team defenses, knowing that they can just foul them and they'll struggle to hit 2 of 2 every time, do so and in so doing severely slow the game down.

Racist much?

My favorite NBA team of all time was the 1980's era L.A. Lakers.

The NBA has been in a long, steady decline since the Pistons won in '89 and '90.

I believe that your question was... does fouling at the end of the game work.

The answer is... often enough that teams keep doing it.

Its not that the players play half assed the first 3 and 3/4 of games, its that they play half assed the first 3/4 of the season. Even the players admit they barely try before playoff push comes.

Thats pretty ridiculous. Teams try as hard as they can to get the #1 seed and HCA for the playoffs. Home court is huge.

That's the stupidest thing I"ve ever read (I mean besides a 300+ pound guy claiming he's not fat, just "Good German Stock"). You're telling me the Jordan era, specifically the 92-93 season wasn't one of the greatest runs any sport has ever had? You actually preferred the "bad boys" pistons to the emergence of the greatest basketball player of all time?

Right now, the NBA has 4 of the 10 most marketable players in any U.S. sport. Granted, the compressed schedule has hurt the quality of play, but it has also led to some quirky and entertaining as hell games.

If you foul an opponent, you immediately stop the clock, and they can only get 1-2 points off of their possession (at the NBA level players rarely miss both free throws), then you have a chance at 2-3 points. You also have the chance, at each inbound pass, for them to mess up and turnover the ball, so you have the chance at a 2-3 point swing (0 for them).

This exchange takes only about 8-10 seconds (you foul them immediately on inbound, run a quick play) hence you could run this 5-6 times in the last minute. If you don't foul, the team that is ahead will just run down the clock. If you are down by 6 and run a series of successful plays, you could feasibly crawl up to a tie or win. Sort of like how NFL teams do onside kicks.

I don't think this really makes the game boring at all. It's not like it takes that long. It can be pretty exciting sometimes, as the team that is behind will run quick, pre-set plays, more akin to football. It's a different playstyle/strategy than the other 46~ minutes of the game.

Most hosts do not hate the NBA nor consider it useless for the first 3.5 quarters of the game (Game-wise, that is very far from the truth).

so no one has any real info on how often it works?

i saw a team doing it down by 6...they lost by like 13 or something like that.

similar in hockey...it's not that often that teams pull off a win by pulling the goalie...but they do it a lot.

in that case, coming from a coach, it's a case of being a long shot when losing anyhow.

The success rate is not negligible at all, maybe 15-30% when down by 4 in the last minute, 5-15% when down by 5-6. Of course this depends greatly on the offensive skill of the team, and the ability to make quick plays.

it often makes for some great last minute plays. Lets say they did the foul strategy thing and now the teams are tied with 6 seconds to go. Inbounds play for a last second shot and photo finish, it's some exciting stuff.

Plus there was that crazy Spurs/Grizzlies game last year in the playoffs where the teams took turns making buzzer beater after buzzer beater. I think that game went into triple overtime or something. Epic.

Meet me in real life and if you can honestly call me fat, then your definition of "fat" is far different than mine. I am simply a properly proportioned human that's much bigger than you. Sorry if that's too difficult to accept.

And yes, the decline of the NBA started in 1989. And no, I don't prefer the Pistons. They were the beginning of the end.

The absolute Golden Age of the NBA were the 1980's with the Lakers/Celtics rivalry. The league has never been the same since.

You'd have to be 7ft+ tall for 300lbs to be even close to not overweight.

A) Mangler isn't an NFL player.

B) Don't hold up NFL players as an example of good health. Their average life expectancy is less than 60 years. Having all that extra weight isn't conducive to good health.

edit:

And nope, he isn't skinny:

It's a long ACF joke, you're too new here.

Did you see this trade suggestion for DH? (think broussard thought of it.)

1. The megadeal
Howard, Hedo Turkoglu and Ryan Anderson for Joakim Noah, Taj Gibson, Luol Deng and Jimmy Butler, plus picks and cash

lol

At this point I think our team needs J.R. Smith more than Dwight Howard.

Plus it would pain me to let Deng go.

Yes. He's out of his contract obligations if his team misses the playoffs. But they're likely to get in so he'd have to stay there until they lose or win it all.

Yeah, he's a great offensive talent. A knucklehead but...he's got talent.

No. I won't post pictures of myself on this board for any reason.

I've extended the invitation for any of you to come to Green Bay and meet me. If you don't want to come here, go f'ck yourself.

Mangler had an accident on the way home from the liquor store. He was run off the road and crashed into a woman's clinic. It was one giant Pabst smear.

Well, maybe it will be some comfort to know that, by Wisconsin standards, you are only slightly overweight...

I know it's about 80% populated with cheese eating lardasses.

I'm 6'3, about 260 lbs. I'm not fat. He might be stocky, but not fat.

Nope, never been. But I'll still make wild accusations for no reason. After all, this is ACF.

You just moved up on my list... applause

Seriously, though, I'm not a fan of basketball. Too many fouls, and most of those are commited with intent, and not just jostling for position. I've tried to watch with friends and just get bored with the showboating and dirty playing and cheap shots.
