Anyone recommend some gloves? I rode a 22 mile off-road trail today and my palms were killing me. I think my right hand even went numb for a bit toward the end.

You'd think that decades of constant masturbation would have prepared me for this. But alas.

Maybe I should dump a whole bottle of lotion on my hands before setting off.

Fist does a lot of biking if I recall. For most outposters playing WoW is considered exercise.

Also I guess I should probably get one of those miniature pumps. I rode past two chicks who were inspecting one of their bikes' tires. They asked if I had a pump. I said no. I had a friggin' backpack on. Must've looked very prepared. They probably thought I was lying. Alternately: Must've looked like a complete retard. "NO I'M SORRY THIS BACKPACK IS FILLED WITH MY SPIDERMAN TOYS, OKAY GOODBYE!"

It was filled with a windbreaker, my wallet & keys, an extra water bottle, a granola bar, and a banana.

stop masturbating and bathing with skin softeners.

get a co2 flat repair kit and carry a couple cartridges. its far more impressive to women that a soft skinned, bloody handed juvenile pumping away with a cheap pump.

seriously, what kind of sissy wears gauntlets on his bike?
you dont think the roughness of of the inside of the gloves would irritate your delicate flesh?

What kind of weather? If it's not too cold, Pearl Izumi gloves do well and are pretty reasonable on Amazon. For colder weather just wear any kind of outdoor glove.

if you are new to this you shouldnt be doing it alone, you can get seriously injured with no one to help you....

also get any type of bike glove that is made from that foam material, with cut offs at the finger region. really dont think brand matters.

and get some knee pads too.... and a helmet. get the type of mini pump that comes with a bracket, so you can put it just below your water bottle.

You might want to look into padded handlebar tape, too. I've only done road riding, but, that helped me.

A banana in a backpack. Keep it on the bottom and save it for last! I bought a pump and I keep it in a drawer in my home.

I don't know how people can work out staring at a TV or listening to music without actually moving. I can do it once in awhile (I have a recumbent exercise bike in my computer room), but it takes a great deal of motivation to get me through it. The nice thing about riding a bike is that you only have to make up your mind to ride out to your destination. Then the only way back is to keep riding.

Oh, and for the pumps - get both a CO2 and a hand pump. Depending on the required pressure of your tires, the hand pump can be pretty tiring (no pun intended) to use. CO2 pumps are fast but they're not very precise. They're both cheap - you can pick up a decent hand pump, CO2 pump and spare cartridges for less than $50.

I don't think the brand is as much of a problem as your grip.

When I first started doing actual mountain biking I had a death grip and had the same issues.

As you get used to the feel you will stop doing this and move with the bike more. If that makes sense.

Fluidity is the best way to describe it.

Be one with the bike Luke.
