so why cant i just call them up and say 'gimme'? why do i still have to have an archaic television subscription of some sorts?

contracts. they could never survive off a subscription model without infrastructure providers getting them in the door in nearly every house in america. So those contracts won't let them sell direct. i'm not even sure they'd want to. A lot of the general costs of doing business are completely absorbed by others for them right now.

it's flaky as hell. Most of the time we watch it it's bugged where it will stop mid play multiple times, and you have to start all over again and get back to the place it died.
netflix or similar streaming sites don't have the issue.

Probably not a bad deal. Lots of good shows from HBO; Rome, Carnivale, The Wire, Oz etc. If it is only 10/month I could see that being worth it until I burn through all the series I wanted to watch
