....VOTE.

The old one is a 52" Samsung. Needs a new motherboard.

I'm thinking of getting a 47" LG that's 3G and a 'Smart TV' and all that.

Or fix the old one.

I CAN'T DECIDE.

I recently had to make this very decision on my 42" Plasma. Luckily, it was not my motherboard and only the capacitors. Cost me $150 to fix.

However, that said, I had investigated the newer TVs, seen my father's new TV he got at Christmas, (smart TV, 3D, etc.), as compared to mine before the repairman got to my house. Their pictures are remarkably better than my 4 year old TV so I set a price in my head that was my cut off. I would purchase a newer TV with all the new technology and better pictures if the repair got to that price.

As it happens it was $400. happy There is some really nice stuff out there in the 800 to 1k range that is a significant upgrade (for me). My reasoning was I'm not gonna spend half the cost of those upgrades on a 4 year old TV to repair when I can get that significant upgrade.

Since it didn't take that much, I repaired. That is my last time repairing that TV though (it was second time).

No - turns off and on in an endless cycle. Samsung will come out and change some capacitors for free (a token effort) - but the tech said it was the motherboard.

Apparently Samsung TVs are having an epidemic of problems. Don't know if I'll be buying them again.

It's a tough call. Four hundred for the four year old, or 1000 for this:

http://www.amazon.com/LG-Infinia-47LW5600-47-Inch-LED-LCD/dp/B004OOTRPC

It is tempting.

I just had to pay $445 to replace the main board in my refrigerator. I didn't even know refrigerators had motherboards. Woke up this morning with water all over the floor. It took me years to amass all those condiments! Now I'm back to square one. A brand new fridge would've cost ~$800.

Do you really think you'll be using the 3D features a lot? They are probably adding several hundred bucks to the cost of the TV.

I got my first flat screen a few months ago. A 50" Panasonic plasma. I've been quite happy with it. It's not quite a smart TV but it has a menu to access some of the popular online functions such as Netflix, Amazon, Pandora and a couple others. I've only done Netlix on it and it works weel. as long as you use your computer to make your queue.

Picture quality is great though I had to fiddle with the colors a bit. Sound is decent. Got it on sale at Sears for $700. The 46" size is currently 770 on Amazon.

Lol. My fridge was made in 1977. It's that nasty yellow/green color. Works like a champ, and if something ever breaks, parts are probably $5.

I have a 52" Samsung LCD. It was having a problem where when I went to turn it on it would just click at me endlessly. A tech replaced 2 capacitors for $100 in labor and $10 in parts and it works fine now.

Is this what is happening with yours?

Samsung is actually offering to exchange those capacitors for free. However, they weren't the problem - the tech said that it looks like the motherboard is blown, which is a more expensive fix.

I'm going to do a dry run on my taxes tonight, and they may help decide the issue. Since I got married last year and she's my dependant, I just may get a nice return.

No, you will be forced to upgrade because they no longer make the parts in appliances that old and repair shops do not keep them on hand. I speak from experience when I bought a house with older appliances. happy

Bought a Toshiba Regza 4 years ago and the only thing that is messed up on it is one little black dot/dead pixel and a little bit of permanent burn-in on the edges from letterbox movies.

Getting a new one this year as I refuse to repair it when it will most likely continue to have problems, and more frequently I might add, after the first repair. Thinking of going either an LG or save some money, get a Vizio like a buddy of mine, and spend what I would have dropped on the LG on hookers and blow.

70 is a bit overkill. 52 should be more than enough unless it's in some dedicated home theatre.

Too much of a coincidence that you'd get two unrelated problems at once. Either the motherboard is fine and they're just going to exchange it to milk more money out of you, or the motherboard blew because of the capacitor issue.

Yeah, and I bet it also has the power draw of a champ, for a cooling efficency that a modern fairly basic fridge does for a quarter of the power.

Energy Star website says I'd save about $100/year. And that energy savings is crap anyway, it's like fluorescent bulbs. They save nothing when you are heating the house. Same with the fridge. Half the year that "wasted" energy just keeps the house warm.

Besides, I can't blow a couple weeks pay on a (cheap) new one anyway.

I discovered last night that marriage can be extremely profitable to one's tax return, especially if the wife isn't working.

I bought this SOB tonight: http://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-55LW5600-led-tv

Fry's had it for $1300.

Problem solved. coffee

Yeah? My wattmeter says different.

You should probably look into changing the heating system too if you think waste heat from a fridge tucked into the backwall of some kitchen is an efficient way to keep the house warm.

I gotta ask, do you install your incandescent bulbs at floor level?

All electricity turns into heat at 100% efficiency (granted some light/sound escapes the house before that happens, but it isn't much).

The fridge is against an interior wall.

The ceiling fans in every room are never off, so waste heat gets circulated pretty well.

And I dunno what your watt-meter is supposed to be telling you about my fridge. I didn't bother to look up the model, but a "typical" for pre-80 uses 2,000kwh/year, and a new one uses 500. 1,500kwh*0.075=$112/year.

Amazing how helping people cheat on their tax returns helps you buy wigs and tvs.....

Do they even have TVs in what insignificant country you're embarrassed to say you're from? Probably not. Christ that has to suck to be from there.

Where are you from?
