Thanks Tessa, we've been throwing the idea of one of them around, my only real concern is getting a short hair dog. I don't want her service dog to require more effort to care for than what she gets from it. I know how yucky it is to have a medium sized dog blowing it's coat all over, a large dog would be even worse (and I can't even imagine how you deal with Wash's coat!)

WHY ARE YOU ALL ASSHOLES?! GOD!

seriously, the best bet for this is to go to the spca, tell them what you want the dog to do and let them call you when a dog with the right temperament comes in. because breed isn't going to get you anywhere. most large service dogs are labs. why? there's so goddamn many of them. maybe 2% of every lab on this planet is a service dog. consider that and stop being stupid about wanting to train your own.

It was an honest question. Most people don't know the first thing about training service animals.

well you do have to train a service dog NOT to act anything like a normal dog, would think that would be much harder than training it to sit or rollover

Goldens are typically what most people use for service dogs. Have to start training them from birth though, and the failure rate is really high.

I don't see how asking if she knows what she is doing is being a dick...

I certainly wouldn't know how to train a dog if I needed to...and I highly doubt most people do and can do it effectively...

labs and german shepherds are the breeds I've seen the most as service dogs...but just because you go buy yourself a puppy lab doesn't mean it's going to turn out as anything other than a well-trained dog.

A person who can't perform daily tasks and needs help getting up and moving around is going to train a dog?

Does anyone see the blatant contradiction there?

Honey, does your daughter know the first thing about training a service dog?

yeah. she undoubtedly doesn't realize how much effort you have to put into it every day. i helped train helper dogs when i was in middle school. i think they let me because i was often on crutches and stuff so it was good for the dogs to be around that kind of thing.

Can you back that up with professional peer reviewed publications? And since you know that, you'd think you'd know what type of breeds are used as service dogs, yet here you are asking on a fading video game website.

Indeed. We have an extremely well-trained golden and he would have failed miserably as a service dog. Just because they're a certain breed doesn't mean every dog in that breed is cut out to be even a passable service dog. Hell he would have failed as a real retriever too because loud noises terrify him. Every fourth of July he's shivering under the bed or behind the couch while fireworks go off.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think you are vastly underestimating the time and effort involved in training a service dog, and overestimating your chances of successfully training one as a service dog. If it were that easy, service dogs would be much more plentiful and cost a lot less because it would simply be a matter of training and not have anything to do with the dog itself. Heck just training our golden to not spaz out with joyous abandon when someone came to visit us took more than two years, and I worked with him every day on it, repeatedly and consistently. He was very obedient and very willing, just very excitable and with the attention span of a flea. And I had no outside job to worry about, no health problems to worry about, and plenty of books, research, and dog trainers to help me.

Just...something to think about.

The time thing is what would kill me, it literally would be a 8 hour a day job for 2 years or longer if the first dog just cant do it. I would love to have that job though if I could actually make a living at it, although I dont know how I would do with the frustration of dogs not making the cut after all that time. Mr Pants also could never be a service dog, cant train the water dog out of him.

I might be wrong but I don't think she is looking for a seeing eye type service dog but more of a helper dog. There is a world of difference between training a dog to ignore all outside stimulus and concentrate on a preset series of actions and training one to pick up a dropped object and give it to the person that gave the command. I've seen lots of elderly with dogs trained as helpers, these dogs would not have made it as seeing eye dogs but were more than adequate as helper dogs.

Even to get a dog certified as a service dog it is extremely difficult. Years of training. Becoming a therapy dog (not even close to as difficult as a service dog) takes a good couple years and tons of training.

Becoming a therapy dog (not even close to as difficult as a service dog) takes a good couple years and tons of training.

there is no real certification for service dogs. It's not required by law, there are however, a lot of fake scammer people that will take your money and give you a little vest to put on your dog and call them "certified".

The only "certification" that is real is when you put your dog through a training school for service dogs. There are no real certification locations for self trained dogs. The ADA only requires that the person being assisted is disabled, and the animal assists that disabled person by doing tasks, generally 3 tasks, like picking up dropped items, retrieving items, opening doors, helping with balance, guiding etc. People like having the little vests so they aren't questioned when bringing an animal into a store, but they are not required by law.

oh let's quibble at semantics instead of the actual issue.

Training dogs to do specific tasks for service capabilities is a difficult and challenging job. If it were so easy to train your own animal then companies couldn't get away with charging 20k+ for the dog + services.

Because the majority of us do not know, or care to remember the specifics of your daugher's disability some may doubt the training ability of your daughter.

However if your goal is to just train three specific tasks, she (you) might have more chance of success. The challenge then becomes how to unlearn the unwanted dog traits.
