Subject: Best breeds for service dogs?
My daughter wants to get a dog to train as a service animal, to help her with getting up and picking up things for her, and retrieving her medication. We can't afford to buy one already trained, but she's willing to do the training.

I've seen a lot of different kinds of service dogs, was wondering what people think of as a breed to look for or one that generally fits these tasks better than others? Obviously it'll have to be a medium or bigger dog to help her with getting up.

just going to lock the god damn thread, since nobody is being helpful at all.

assholes

Does your daughter know the first thing about training dogs?

She is going to follow the training program that the 4H uses.

uh service dogs are raised from puppies and a lot of them don't even end up being capable of doing it with their temperament. so.. good luck!

I was trying to actually help. Training a dog is difficult, few people know what they're actually doing, and have the discipline or perseverance or know-how to do it correctly.

everyone starts somewhere, there are a lot of resources available for people trying to teach dogs certain tasks. 4H is who does most of the training for service animals in the volunteer sector in my area.

That's kinda the great thing about being a human, we can learn to do new things whenever we want to.

Boy, aren't you optimistic. If I was a betting man, which I am, I'd bet that years down the line you will have a beloved family pet and not a well trained service dog.

I've had 3 dogs and with each one the intent was to train them. Family is 0/3 on that. Training takes a ton of patience and i'm just talking about stuff like don't bark and behave. not the kind of stuff you're talking about with fetching and all the stuff service dogs are supposed to do.

My cocker spaniel is trained to do damn near every standard trick that dogs do, she's smart and learns quickly. She could easily learn the tasks to do what is needed, but she doesn't have the body mass necessary for it to work for our needs.

maybe your family is a bunch of lazy people that won't train the dog to stop jumping on people and licking them to death, but that doesn't mean that everyone is that way, or that it's particularly difficult to do, it's just time consuming.
