It isn't some magic power of blackness, its simple...
Africa has more genetic diversity than the rest of the planet put together. That means for any given athletic endeavor, you are likely to find someone of african descent who has the best body morphology for that particular event. West africans dominate events that involve power generation, but make lousy endurance runners. East africans dominate endurance running, but are lousy sprinters and jumpers. But west africans are genetically closer to europeans than they are to east africans. Thats how diverse african genetics are. That is not to say africans dominate everything. Power lifting for example is dominated by slavs and east asians, despite the fact there are larghe numbers of african descended people involved in power lifting. But one the greatest powerlifters ever was black guy named Lamar Gant who had a unique body morphology that made him an absolute machine at power lifting. African genetic diversity in action.
As an aside..India has the second most genetic diversity..so in the next 50 years expect to see more Indian athletes holding records...

In a gross generalization, whites are better swimmers because they have shorter legs and longer torsos (lower center of gravity) while blacks are better runners because they have longer legs and shorter torsos (higher center of gravity).
At the highest level of competition, even a small percent advantage is huge.
No white sprinter has held the 100M dash record since 1968.
It is about biomechanics.

While genetics obviously plays a big part in athletic ability, I can kind of see Bonk's point about practice. At least in soccer, the best players often come from the ghettos because all they do is play soccer. Even if they don't have a real ball, a stuffed sock will do. Ethnic background doesn't make a huge difference. When you train your whole life at a certain activity for 6+ hours a day, the better your chances to be a pro. Basketball is a little different because height plays a huge factor.

I'm not sure I buy that. How is an East African more genetically different from a West African as opposed to being different from an east Asian or a Norse? I don't think it's diversity that gives the continent the edge in athletics (where do North Africans figure?) Africans in general are just taller, leaner, and more muscularly dense than a lot of other ethnic groups - not to say that they aren't varied or that certain areas aren't better specialized for certain activities, but in general Africans are simply better built for sports. Power, endurance, and speed is 90% of sports. 
Perhaps it's more a case of survival of the fittest... they probably had to rough it a lot more than people in other areas.

Its simple..non african humans are descended from a small subset of the african population, and haven't had time to evolve the same kind of genetic diversity of the humans that remained in africa. The most genetically diverse ethnic group on the planet are the San, the african bushmen who are not closely related at all the dominant Bantu groups of the region.

I think both are true, the cultural thing amplifies genetic differences here. The differences are relatively small though and matter little to the average person. However at the top level of competition a small difference can go a long way.

Blacks as a whole could probably be easily broken down into at least three separate major subgroups, East, West and South (the aborigines, that is, before the Bantu up and killed almost all of them).
The native Southern Africans are the shortest people in the world. I'd agree with Grymm on his first post but there's a lot of physical variation within West Africans themselves, so if you're going to have lots of people that pass a high threshold for sprinting they'll probably be disproportionately West African, not so much because of variation within Africans but within the Western subset. The typical African is actually pretty lanky and physically unimposing, if not morbidly obese in the developed world.
It's kinda like how there are only maybe 100-150m pure-blooded Northeast Asians in the developed world yet they're the only ones to produce individuals known with 200+ IQ (developing world excluded for malnutrition), but then again their average IQ is much higher than that of whites on top of having a higher standard deviation.

Why dont we just do some DNA testing and find out if the athletes have the same genes (based on race) or if the best ones have different genes.
Then we would know if it was racial genetics or not.

I know a well-documented case to the contrary. Pure blooded East Asians are better looking, more intelligent, longer lived, and more pro-social that white-East Asian hybrids. On the socioeconomic front they have higher incomes, better education, better jobs, lower unemployment, and are less likely to ask for government assistance than the half-breeds. This may be just because of hordes of white men scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of East Asian women, but I don't think that explains everything.

I'm very skeptical of that book. I hope that the girl on the cover is not "proof" that they're better looking. He may be coming from the perspective of a group that is plagued by a high prevalence of countless genetic diseases but some "pure" groups are very healthy.
