I learned a few things from my dad even though he was pretty much an ass. I was only 5 but I remember a dog we got. I guess it's food was changed and it wasn't happy with the new food. My dad said, "He'll eat it when he gets hungry." And guess what? In 2 days the dog got hungry and started eating the new food.

Mine are the same way. The rule in our house has always been "must try one bite of a new food" (or even a familiar food cooked a new way). If you don't like it you don't have to eat more of it, but I'm also not a short order cook. What's for dinner is what's for dinner. Based on that one rule they have always been extremely open to trying new things, and will even occasionally re-try things they don't like because "sometimes your taste buds change" (as my 10 year old puts it).
So I have a 13 year old who loves steak and begs for salads, a 10 year old who digs sushi and all kinds of seafood (in a family where the rest of us mostly hate all forms of seafood) and a 6 year old who eats raw onion slices like french fries and sneaks raw spinach and carrots when she thinks I'm not paying attention. And of course they all adore bacon

My parents had the "at least try one bite" rule, too. I was still a horribly picky kid. But, mom wouldn't make me anything else, I had to do it for myself. So I ate a lot of fluffernutter sandwiches when I was little... As I got older, I did widen my tastes, though. I still enjoy a good fluffernutter once in a while, but it's not the only thing I eat.

My kid isn't this extreme, just the normal 11-year-old girl whom I have to fight to eat her vegetables, but I'm certainly not going to starve her out. I've learned what works and what doesn't to motivate her, and starving her wouldn't phase her in the least. I also have vivid memories of a specific incident as a child where I dearly wanted to eat my dinner, but I couldn't hold it down, and was forced to sit there all night.
I've lost an insane amount of weight, but I'm still a big guy, and I want my daughter to have a healthy and normal relationship with food. Therefore, I don't do that sort of thing to her.

It's not like I have never heard of this before. One of my cousins has the same thing, only one degree less severe than this girl (if they do in fact have the same thing). Trying new foods or being forced to eat something she didn't want or didn't like would literally cause a mental reaction so severe in her as a child that her throat would close up. The difference is that my aunt didn't just capitulate, or give up. My cousin probably would have starved if the options had been that or eating something not of her choosing. So yeah- I will admit the whole starvation thing was wrong of me.
The difference again, is that my aunt knew that this was not right and got freaking help. My cousin is an adult now with small children of her own, and while her diet is nowhere near as varied as even a normal pizza-downing college student or even a grade-schooler, she is healthy and not malnourished. Her kids also do not seem to have the same issues she did/does with food.

I remember the first time I had to travel and live down in GA and made the mistake of ordering a "Super" sized meal, as I was already accustomed to in Canada. Low and behold I was taken aback by the amount of food and drink I was provided as being far too much.
Really...even Canadians shouldn't be surprised as the meals here have mimicked the US meals.

Sorry, my first reply on this was a bit on the emotional side, and this one is likely to be as well. Having had two children with different food issues, it makes me a bit emotional for people to jump down on the mother for something she could never have solved on her own. it doesn't excuse her lack of finding help for her daughter however.
My son who is now 16 had Apraxia, he didn't learn to speak until he was 5 years old. he spent pre-school and kindergarten in the slow kid classroom because of it. He was able to understand speech fine, and he tried to talk but it wouldn't come out right. He spent from the ages of 2-6 in intensive speech therapy to overcome his disorder. He used sign language in the meantime, which helped him not get overly frustrated with being unable to communicate. Along with the speech problems came food problems. He wouldn't eat cereal with milk, only cereal with yogurt. He only likes Hamburgers plain with ketchup on the side to dip in. He only likes campbells chicken noodle soup (don't try to fool him with generic either!)
We've worked him up to eating some more things now, but his main go to is still a plain hamburger. I think he humors me more than he tries to humor his dad, he'll try new stuff for me because I pester him about it. He'll almost always say something is ok, and then not finish it. he's a good kid, polite, and doesn't want to be a bother or be rude and say he doesn't like something I make for him.
My daughter was allergic to everything, we didn't know it until she was almost a year old. She was tested for the top ten allergies in children, and was allergic to 4 of them. Milk, Soy, Corn, and Peanut.
That doesn't leave much on the list of things she could eat, plus by this time she had it in her head that eating hurts. Her first doctor would tell me "she won't starve herself"... yet she was skinny and had a distended belly like an Ethiopian. The doctor told me she was doing just fine, I told the doctor she was nuts and scheduled an appointment outside of the "group death" network, where we finally got the answers. She had an almost constant ear infection until she was 18 months old because of the milk allergies, her formula was this nasty stuff that was horrendously expensive and smelled disgusting. After she got off the formula she had goat's milk. It took her YEARS to catch up, and until her auto immune disease popped up last year, she was always under weight. (5'8" and 115 lbs)
Let me tell you, there is nothing like standing in a grocery store looking at the label of every can or box of anything you buy trying to find stuff without Corn Syrup in it. Having your child only want things she couldn't have.

Exactly like my best friend. Known him for years, and there are very few things he would eat. Always ate a hamburger plain with ketchup. Hes actually gotten passed that now, and has a much more varied diet since were in our 20's now.

I have to say I'm on yours and Jezza's side here. My younger daughter loves food and would eat anything, but my older daughter has been picky ever since she was a baby. I think she has two issues, actually: 1) control (we saw this with her even when she was BREASTFEEDING and I'm mostly to blame for that, my milk came out too fast for her) and 2) texture, she rejects anything that does not have a uniform texture, from breads to yogurts to meats. Her grandfather has texture issues with food as well, so I'm pretty sure I know where she gets it from.
We make healthy food available to our kids, but out of the things that are available, they can choose what they want. Over the course of a week, they usually manage to get enough of a variety in. I do give them vitamin supplements. Since my daughter already has control issues around food, I think it could be dangerous to start a power struggle in this area. Letting her choose from a set of healthy options gives her the chance to have input on her diet, without letting her go hog-wild eating crap. I don't want to try to FORCE her to eat something, because I am afraid that may set a dangerous precedent. Food is only food, we should not allow ourselves to become neurotic about it, and lots of people DO develop disorders around food, from simple "eating for comfort" that leads to obesity, to bulimia and anorexia. We have had numerous conversations with her pediatrician about her eating habits, usually involving her as she is a very intelligent and responsible kid.
I have never believed in forcing children to eat foods they don't like. My parents never did it to me, and I have always maintained a healthy weight and am happy to try many new foods. I encourage my kids to try a bite of a new food, but I don't tell them they have to clear their plate or anything like that. I've seen people who were raised that way, and too many of them are overweight now and will eat whatever isn't nailed down. Let's face it, right now food scarcity is not a problem for most of us in the First World.
I do think the parents in this article should have seen a specialist for help with their child's eating difficulties, if they didn't. At the least it is something that should have come up during regular visits to their daughter's pediatrician, who could have referred them to more specialized help if more straightforward alternatives didn't work.

No wonder kids are so screwed up these days. "Parents" want to treat each kid like a unique snowflake.
I grew up having meals at a giant round table with two parents and 10 siblings. We all ate the same thing. We ate what was served. Or, we went to bed hungry.
It's just not that complicated. It doesn't take a psychoanalyst.
It takes A PARENT.

Sometimes parents take it a bit too far. The longer your child is not exposed, the worse the allergy gets. My sister-in law was always ranting about peanuts. I asked her if she had been exposed to it before. She said "Yes, I took benadryl and I was ok afterward"... I almost a laughed at her... for all of the special considerations made to keep things peanut free, she has a relatively mild allergy. If she had a severe allergy and was exposed, she'd need hospital intervention if she didn't have an epi pen.
It becomes a psychological reaction more than anything else. That same sister in law was stung by a bee... Thought she was having an allergic reaction... went hospital... nope... she's having a panic attack that she might be allergic to the bee sting... lol. It's not entirely her fault though, her parents babied her/were over cautious, creating her psychological problem.
My son was allergic to eggs when he was first trying food. Broke out in hives around his face if he ate them. Over time, his allergy went away. We kept giving him eggs because it was a mild allergy. Eats them all the time now, no reaction.
That is not to say that people don't have severe allergies, obviously some people do. But being allergic and stuffing up is a lot different than going into anaphylactic shock. We are way over cautious for the moderate to mild (annoying but harmless) levels.

I believe you should train kids just like you train dogs.
You can't let one dog up on the couch and leave the other one outside in a cage. You don't have one master giving the dog a treat for obeying the sit command and have the other master beat the dog for the same behavior.
Treat them all the same and they will be happy, healthy and normal.

In general, perhaps... on this specific subject, I sure hope YOU are trolling, because there was nothing wrong with what I said. I include everything I've said on this thread in that, not just what you've quoted.
But like I said, it's always easy to spot the non-parents. Get a stubborn kid, and realize that when you do eventually get through to him, he's nothing like any other kid and the next one won't respond to that approach at all. I'm certainly never going to try starvation to win an argument, and I don't do the "you can't get anything else to eat until this is gone" bit for more than a single evening.
