OK, I think I'm depressed, blah blah blah. I go to the doctor, to see if they'll do anything about it...

He tells me that its all just a state of mind, and more or less accuses me of shopping around to try to get a script from a doc.

WTF. Eff you, doc. eff you.

I never even mentioned meds to him, as I'd rather do other things, I don't like the side effects of most of those meds... I just asked him. And he goes on saying how people go around, trying to get prescriptions for drugs when they don't need them, and more or less to suck it up.

I think I need a new doc.

And maybe not. You have started at least two now, probably more, threads about this and many people gave you great suggestions.

What have you actually done besides go to the doctor and apparently expect a prescription. Just sounds like one side of the story here.

You would only go to the doctor for depression for two things:
1) Drugs
2) Advise

You apparently did not respond to #2 well.

Exercise, yes. Trying to get into some sort of shape. I lost 30ish lbs last year, gonna lose another 35 or so, then start lifting to gain some back in muscle mass.

Haven't changed hobbies, but I really don't have much time anyway, with work and school. Read mostly. Video games when I get a chance. Hang out with friends when there's time, which isn't often anymore.

I've cut back majorly on drinking over the last couple of years. A beer or two a week. Haven't been drunk in god knows how long. I cut back on the bud, too... usually only when I can't sleep.

Good for you man! I have nothing else then. I will take it at face value that it sounds like you are at least trying. Maybe your doctor is a dick.

I would just suggest getting out of the house more, church, social gatherings (without alcohol), volunteer work, etc etc. Much better chance of meeting a nice lady to help change the tide.

Good luck.

*However, you really need to quit smoking pot and drinking completely for best results. Both are depressants, so it is hard to make a real case if you self depressing. And my guess is it a smidge more than you indicating here.

this is why primary care doctors are so pressured to write a script. one time they don't want to write one and woosh there goes their customer to some less scrupulous doc who will. and since primary care docs get paid the least they need more patients than anyone.

It's less the fact that he won't write a script and more the fact that he pretty much just said "suck it up" and accused him of just trying to get drugs, instead of actually taking a minute to listen and at least try to verify the validity of his patient's complaint.

he didn't take a minute? whoa were you there or something?

i've worked in a primary care office before. a person walking into that office who isn't looking for the doctor to "do" something like order a test or write a script is a mythical beast. they probably had to pay a copay and want something tangible out of it. if you're there for allergies you want some allergy medicine yattaa yatta yatta.

plus, if your problem is depression you need more than a 30 minute office visit to get sorted out. that's not what most primary care guys can feasibly do for you. if your patients are medicare, or hmo you will probably go out of business if you spend the time it takes to investigate depression in all your patients. if ur patients are on medicare/hmo you might have to see at least 15 patients a day to make ends meet (total guess).

Really? When I go into the doctor I'm looking for answers, not necessarily drugs- whether it's regarding me, my husband, or my kids. In fact, the only reason I accept drugs is when it's absolutely necessary. Fortunately the only things so far we've needed prescriptions for are allergy meds- and now that Allegra is over the counter we don't even need to see the doc for that. Of course, we rarely ever see the inside of a doctor's office apart from well-child visits. Heck, I haven't even had a primary doctor for myself for...at least five years (although I should). I'm pregnant so I'm doing the prenatal visits with my OB-GYN now, however.

But you're right- if the problem is depression it'll take more than a 30 minute office visit to sort it out. If the primary care doc can't spare the time for whatever reason then I would expect him to refer his patient to a doctor/specialist who can, instead of blowing him off.

wtf would a drug-seeker use depression meds for? I can't imagine the street value of Prozac is particularly high...

Maybe you shouldn't have walked in and said, "I have depression real bad, can you please give me some Valium?"

Maybe you should have went and seen a shrink first.

When the VA put me on mindfck drugs, I had to see a couple different shrinks/therapists first.

most anti-depressants prescribed are ssri's snri's,etc..........

at least you have to usually get prescribed those first and if they dont work then they prescribe the "narcotic" drugs. they dont go around willy-nilly prescribing out valium, lithium, and other mind altering drugs as a first treatment.

LOL, you cant get high on lithium, and it isnt a narcotic. If you want to vomit, shake and feel like someone turned your brain down to like 3 then you might go drug-seeking for lithium tongue

I've had this problem with other health issue with doctors before as well.

I think now that medical information is so readily available online about different types of symptoms and stuff, a lot of people don't go in seeking help feeling helpless, they are more just finally breaking down and accepting that they have all of these symptoms and should address them before they get worse.

It seems like doctors respond to that by assuming that you went and found some drug you wanted online and then made up symptoms to go with it rather than having the symptoms in the first place and looking into types of treatments available so you could go into an appointment informed.

Edit: I'm really surprised he wouldn't even give you a referral to someone that could make the call on whether you need some professional assistance whether it be medication or just therapy. That alone would be enough to make me switch to a different PCP. Sometimes they just aren't a good match.

Can't win.

Prescribe the drugs and you're a low-class whore working a corner for the pharmaceutical industry handing out pills people don't need like your at a rave.

Refuse to prescribe the drug and you're an arrogant dick who doesn't care about his patients.

The referral crap is even worse. The guy doesn't think you need anti-depressants and you don't understand why you don't get a referral? The whole point of referrals is to free specialists up to handle cases actually requiring their expertise.

I wasn't there. Maybe the guy is just a dick. Completely possible. Just as possible that he listened and evaluated you and decided that you weren't at the stage of needing a pharmacology let alone a psychiatrist. I know the public has this firm conception that they're special butterflies in need of an orthopedist for their sprained ankle or a psychiatrist for their straightforward case of depression, but a family physician should be pretty damn capable of handling that...

Plenty of asshats in white coats. But there are just as many asshats standing in a free clinics bitching about the 40 minute wait or how they didn't get antibiotics for their cold.

Bam. Keep it this simple. Move on to someone who does their job and cares about you.

you should go to the ombudsman first. they're like the office or hospital hr but they fight for you, not the doctor. at least, that's what the one at my doctor's office does.

if you take it... and even worse, like it.....

you are a bad.

Mangler had an accident on the way home from the liquor store. He was run off the road and crashed into a woman's clinic. It was one giant Pabst smear.

Maybe you should find a therapist rather than seeking medication. Suck it up isn't a good answer, but I doubt drugs would have been either.

Think about the things in your life that you are bummed you haven't accomplished. Once I stopped seeing my life a a mess and started seeing it like a huge pile of things I can't wait to accomplish, my depression became a thing of the past.

Also, I broke my hand and the patronizing asshole doctor was like "I bet you want this painkiller, but I can't give it to you" and I kept saying I dont want to walk out of the office with a broken hand and a bottle of painkillers because my hand will get worse and worse. Eventually when I turned down even extra strength tylenol, he took me seriously and perscribed me the stronger stuff anyways. Which I didn't take because I didn't want to take them anyways.

Citalopram has made a world of difference for me, been on it for 3 months. No noted side affects or anything, just a generally uplifted mood happy
