Overall, the last few seasons and the final story arc were pretty good. The final fight with Sisko, Dukat and Kai Winn was weak, though - they should have scrapped the entire storyline starting from where Gul Dukat seduced Kai Winn. As an extension to the crappy final fight, Sisko's ascension was done pretty terribly as well. I think it would have been done much better if they handled it more like the series premiere, where Cisko spent a good deal of time trying to explain linear existence to the wormhole aliens, instead of just having him talk to his mother for a few quick scenes here and there. Still, they did a much better job of wrapping the series up than the TNG finale did (though TNG had to consider future movies and couldn't really do anything permanent like DS9). There were some excellent episodes that really stand out dramatically more than any episode of TNG did. Unfortunately, there were a lot of stupid episodes about the Ferengi or the O'Briens or the Bashir / Miles bromance that have to be waded through in order to find the good ones.

One late story arc that really annoyed me was Vic Fontaine. He was a fun character at first, but about the third time he sang a full-length crooner song it felt like the writers were just trying to fill a few more minutes of the script.

Overall I'd give it a 5/10 for the first 4 seasons and a 7/10 for the last 3, though there were good and bad episodes spread throughout the series.

The "plot twist" with those aliens with the device that shut down ships was pretty stupid too, especially because it never went anywhere and was classic "deus ex machina" technobabble crap.

The Ferengi were the best part of the show. The war story was typical of a lot of meta plots where it is good at creating suspense but the conclusion sucks.

Yeah. Happened in B5 too. Although in that case apparently you can lay most of the blame at the feet of the network that forced them to back the conclusion to the war into 6 episodes instead of a full season like they were planning.

Also the religious race was horrible. Every single one of them was hella annoying.

I saw one episode of the show. Some little green guy with bad teeth was trying to sell something or other and this other guy who was weird looking, bald and sorta waxy=like, didn't want him to sell whatever it was then this chick with spots on her head did something that fixed the situation and everyone was happyish....except this other guy who had a kid and talked a lot. He seemed really mad about the whole thing.

Didn't really get into it at all.

You mean in B5 or DS9 or both?

I'd say both.

One thing that always puzzled my about B5 was why they took the two boring ambassadors and made them the center of most of the story when they had the two really interesting ambassadors who were more side characters.

I really enjoyed the first 2/3rds of DS9, it fell apart in the final third.

Oh the Breen with the energy drain weapons? I thought they stole a Jem'Hadar ship with the weapon in order to research it, which is why they weren't affected by it in the final battle. I fell asleep while that one was on so I didn't quite get the whole jist of the story.

DS9 was at its best when it focused on serial plots and got away from those sh***y episodes that just focused on one character who's played by a weak actor. (those episodes were the bane of Trek, seriously... STFU & DIAF, Bashir)

Also, I never could decide whether that one episode where Sisko turned into a 1950s sci-fi writer was an epic tribute, or maudlin weaksauce.

I'd put it in the top 5 episodes. It was handled well, but to be honest I liked the performances of most of the rest of the cast. Avery Brooks had his moments, but they were few and far between (and never in the first three seasons). I read that there was an alternate ending where the writer was going to be standing in front of a TV studio holding a script titled "Star Trek" but they decided that would be too much. I think that ending would have been better than Sisko's monologue while staring just barely off camera.

ds9 is the most underrated trek ever, but it did end weakly towards the final seasons
