I wonder if that would work. Would definitely be better than outright conquering them, but with all the different languages and cultures, would they all be willing to work together for the collective good, or is each country going to only look out for their best interests?

Right now the problem with EU is that everyone wants equal share of benefits but no one wants equal share of responsibilities...that would surely fix that but at what cost?

This is often brought up as a problem, but really what does it mean. The people are still the sovereign. With more power to the parliament even more so than now. Okay, it adds another layer. But with the same argument you might as well question the existence of Finland and demand all power be moved to regional or local levels.

This is often brought up as a problem, but really what does it mean. The people are still the sovereign. With more power to the parliament even more so than now. Okay, it adds another layer. But with the same argument you might as well question the existence of Finland and demand all power be moved to regional or local levels.
See, here is how this would evolve. The countries of the EU would now be called EU States. There would be one guy at the head called something like a President. The "Parliament" would then be divided into two groups. One big group called the House, and one smaller group called the Senate. Then they would create a 3rd Judicial branch made up strictly of people they pick to decide whether or not the things they pass as law would be legal or not.
Once this is done, there would be a movement toward a two party system of "conservatives" and "liberals" who will need a lot of money to run against each other. Don't worry, you may think two is not a lot to choose from, but it is, really. Two is all you need to get the full spectrum of ideas.
Once this is done corporate person-hood will become law and your politicians will accept bribes from those corpersons in the form of campaign contributions. If the elected officials want to stay in office (have enough money to) they will pass laws favorable to the corpersons which will allow them to squeeze other countries for all of their resources on the threat of war.
You too, can become a world superpower in a few easy steps. All you have to be willing to do is crap on the many for the gain of the few!

We would never end up with a two party system for several reasons. Also the EU is more likely to turn into a parliamentary democracy instead of a presidential democracy. The third (judicial) branch already exists btw.

Because we tried being all lovey to Sweden, we bought her nice things but she only called us when Poland needed to be put back to its place or Prussians were being mean to her...As long as we kept buying her nice things and doing her dirty work for her our Relationship with Sweden flourished.
Then that 6 feet tall hairy rapist called Russia came and had its way with us in front of Sweden.
