The University of Minnesota's Smart Politics conducted an analysis on the last 70 State of the Union addresses and found that President Obama's three addresses have the lowest grade average of any modern president. "Obama's average grade-level score of 8.4 is more than two grades lower than the 10.7 grade average for the other 67 addresses written by his 12 predecessors," they conclude.
"The Flesch-Kincaid test is designed to assess the readability level of written text, with a formula that translates the score to a U.S. grade level. Longer sentences and sentences utilizing words with more syllables produce higher scores. Shorter sentences and sentences incorporating more monosyllabic words yield lower scores," the University of Minnesota's Eric Ostermeier explains.
Obama's use of simple language is in part a reflection of his supporters. And it's part of a larger trend in simpler State of the Union language as the speech as transitioned from a simple address to Congress into a prime-time televised event.

How about breaking it down comparing Obama to each previous president, rather than showing his score against the average of the 12 previous combined? How did he compare to Bush? Or Clinton? Or Reagan? Has the trend been to make the speeches easier for more to comprehend as time as gone on, and the earliest presidents scored in the 12 previous rated were really speaking at 12th grade level or higher, and it has trended down as time has gone on to appeal to the larger US population?

1. Select a few paragraphs to use as your base.
2. Calculate the average number of words per sentence. Multiply the result by 0.39
3. Calculate the average number of syllables in words (count and divide). Multiply the result by 11.8
4. Add the two results together
5. Subtract 15.59
So the number of words per sentence and the number of syllables in the words are the determining factors?
Fairly certain that the way Obama talks has a great deal to do with this. His short choppy delivery is very effective, but it relies on short sentences. Very short, such as, We can. I do. They believe......that kind of stuff.
It's the reason that using the index outside of an educational setting is pretty pointless. I ran the index (you can use Word to find the index of anything you can cut and paste into it) on a couple of random paragraphs. Highest score I got was 18.2, lowest was 4.1.

Academic papers are fine at 15th grade level, but I always had a dickens of a time getting my public information projects below a 12th grade level. I was going to say the same thing. The training I write is generally required by DoD standards to be at an 8th grade level. If I'm teaching pilots, it's 10th grade level.

No, pretty much all of you. Plenty of people took Combat to task on this thread, but for the wrong reasons, because nobody understood that writing or delivering a speech at a lower grade level is both desirable and harder. Academic papers are fine at 15th grade level, but I always had a dickens of a time getting my public information projects below a 12th grade level. It's HARDER to write at a lower grade level, and I applaud Obama and his writers for getting this done.
For reference, Reader's Digest and most mass-consumption periodicals target a 5th grade level.

Actually at an 8th grade level it's just about perfect for the populace. My biggest problem in college with writing essays is that my writing was too high level. I had to dumb it down just like the newspapers. I was continually scoring at a 14th and 15th grade level. Was hard to bring it down to 9th grade level which is where it should have been.
