According to the hints from Mike O'Brien

Welcome to the Year of the Dragon!

Today is Lunar New Year’s Day, and according to the Asian zodiac system, the first day of the Year of the Dragon. It’s an auspicious omen for all of us at ArenaNet, as we get ready to make this our own Year of the Dragon.

According to tradition, the dragon embodies passion, independence, and ambition. We think it’s a perfect analogy for what we’re trying to accomplish with Guild Wars 2. We’re a company full of MMO and RPG fans, and we’ve set out to fundamentally rethink how you deliver an RPG experience online. So this year, the Year of the Dragon, let’s usher out old thinking – the tired old quest model, stiff repetitive combat, and monthly fees – and usher in the new.

Guild Wars 2 has captured the imagination of gamers and media all over the world with its action-oriented combat, its living world full of dynamic events, its highly personalized role-playing experience, and the handcrafted artistry that suffuses every element of the game. Last year, thousands of you joined us at shows and events all over the world to try Guild Wars 2 for yourself. This year, you’ll finally be able to immerse yourself in the vast, diverse world of Tyria.

We recently finished our first closed beta test, and we’re now ready to hold progressively larger events. In February we’ll invite select press to participate in beta testing, and in March and April we’ll aggressively ramp up the size of our beta test events so that many of you will have a chance to participate. And of course, this all leads to the release of Guild Wars 2 later this year.

So stay tuned to our official Guild Wars 2 website, our Facebook page, and this blog for more information about how to participate in an upcoming beta event.

It’s been an incredible adventure over the past five years, working with our community and our team of dedicated artists, designers, and programmers to realize this vision. This year, the seeds of that work come to fruition. We can’t wait to play the game with you.

So welcome to the Year of the Dragon – the year of Guild Wars 2.

-Mike O’Brien
ArenaNet Founder and President

Pretty cool. Hope it goes well. Does anyone have a guess on when MOP would be released based on the past turnaround for WoW expansions?

I don't think you can really go by any past expansion releases due to them moving up the date for this next one. I suppose the best answer would be sooner than you'd expect.

If they follow the same pattern as past expansions there will possibly be two more patches. One 'filler' patch that attempts to lead up to the next expansion. Really just to satiate raiders just before MoP beta begins. Then the pre-release patch a month or so before the expansion release.

If they do a filler patch I'd guess beta testing in June. Release in October at the earliest. More likely November again.

If they don't do a filler patch then I'm going with beta in April and release in Aug/Sept.

I can give more accurate guesses when alpha testing begins.

I have a feeling that Blizzard wants to try to get this one out ASAP, to MOP up Cata and try to steal the thunder that will be GW2. It all hinges upon that I think in many cases. I don't think TOR is much of a threat any more as I have already read people unsubbing already, the game will not be able to retain as many players as some have predicted and it is why I went with the low ball number of roughly 1-1.5 million subs a year after release. The patch in March will be a big determining factor when it comes to TOR and being able to retain players, espeicaly casuals figuring there is absolutely nothing worth a damn to for a casuals once you hit max, beside level another character along the same leveling path. Hell even I am taking a break from TOR already and am replaying through Final Fantasy 13 right now to get the second game eventually after playing the demo.

Anyway, I agree with Rill that I think you might actually see this one late summer roughly as far as MOP goes. I also think you will see GW 2 release in June or July time frame. Blizzard will need to have MOP ready in a couple months after that.

They've already stated they won't be adding anymore raids this expansion. so not sure what they'd bother doing in terms of a "filler" patch.

my guess is the next patch will be the one that makes the world ready for the expansion with all the talent/spec changes.

as for TOR.. i like it.. i don't know that its a long term investment for me. that being said i already have 3-4 friends that love the game and are now saying they like it more than wow (after playing seince beta).

as for a launch of mop? thats too hard to say. people will be bored very soon with dragon soul if they aren't already. my guess though is that the expansion is still at a minimum 6 months out. but honestly.. i see a november release again.. they kind of like it.. and they have diablo 3 coming out within 3 months i'd say.

as for GW2? i liked GW.. for about 2 weeks maybe 3.... it wasn't that great of a game and got really boring.

I liked GW, but I played WoW during the time it was out. I don't really have enough room in my life for multiple MMOs, except beta tests, hehe.

Yes because we all know from movie and music and other entertainment awards means something is great and fantastic.Personally I hated Guild Wars I tried to like it and get into it but I just never could.I am sure alot of people loved it for the simple fact it was b2p and they had no sub fee after that.

As a matter of fact awards associated with games are generally a good indicator for how good a game is, just like movie awards and music awards. Just because you personally didn't enjoy it doesn't make it a bad game, it makes your tastes different from other people.

Actually, success is a much better indicator for how good a game is. People will hand out opinions with amazing alacrity, especially when paid to do so. Parting people from their money in larger-than-sample-size lots takes a lot more effort.

There are games that get that many awards that aren't successful? I don't know of any...

Probably the best Analogy to use when it comes to GW 1 and GW 2.

GW 1 equals Warcraft 1, a good game but with some issues.

GW 2 looks like it will equal Warcraft 2, a great game that was very different from Warcraft 1 in how it played.

This is rather fitting consider who founded Arena Net and were they came from, Blizzard may not be half the company it is with out Mike O'Brien and the other two Anet founders.

I don't think you understand what an opinion is at all. An opinion is something that can only be subjective so calling a game bad that has a stack of awards isn't an opinion, it's just plain wrong. However if you were to say you didn't enjoy the game for X reason, that is an opinion.

For a more accurate definition, I will provide you with this:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/opinion

Opinion - a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty.

You're welcome for the English lesson!

Edit: Unless the stack of awards are for the worst in something I guess.

are you also one of those people who say wow was dead years ago when the FACT was that it had 12 million users?

i also would have given GW awards... the first couple weeks i played it. then it got boring and i quit within a month. and the fact that something wins awards doesn't mean it's good.

look at how many @#!%^#!#$^! movies win "best picture" and you watch it and say WTF did i just watch? i want the last 3 hours of my life back.

also, re-read my original post. i never called GW bad, i just said it wasn't that great and that i got bored with it. two different things.

If you are an English major and actually got a degree then your school really sucks because every single one of those is subjective. Please allow me to demonstrate your complete lack of understanding here.

All definitions posted come from: http://dictionary.reference.com

Personal - of, pertaining to, or coming as from a particular person; individual; private: a personal opinion. (That looks subjective to me.)

Attitude - manner, disposition, feeling, position, etc., with regard to a person or thing; tendency or orientation, especially of the mind: a negative attitude; group attitudes. (Oh dear, every bit of that looks subjective as well.)

Appraisal - the act of estimating or judging the nature or value of something or someone. (Estimate? Uh oh! That is subjective as well!)

So as you can see I didn't own myself. Mostly all you've accomplished here is make yourself look like an idiot who went to a really crappy college.

Seeing as the person who posted the game was bad, posted as a personal opinion, he wasn't in the wrong.

And half of those awards... guess what, subjective opinion based by some editor for a magazine or gamesite.

Yep, you've just confirmed that your education was worthless. In fact I'm in awe that you would so willingly make yourself look like a complete fool. Who 'boasts' that they are an English major and then demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of several words?

Also, if the game were to have won one or two awards you may have grounds to say that they are subjective. However, if you count the number of awards there you'll notice it isn't a small amount. In fact I'll go ahead and count them up for you because you may not know your basic addition given the fact you don't know basic English.

That is 23 awards and 9 great reviews.

For the record, those awards and reviews are a lot more objective than subjective. Usually they can't just give their opinion on a game, they are required to explain in full detail their reasoning behind what they say. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a group collaboration in most circumstances. Not to mention the fact that these people know what they are talking about a helluva lot more than some random forum goer.

I do hope you post again because I'm enjoying watching you make a bigger fool of yourself.

Opinions...

Yep, he posted his opinion and I posted some facts. Funny how that works, eh?

are you also one of those people who say wow was dead years ago when the FACT was that it had 12 million users?

i also would have given GW awards... the first couple weeks i played it. then it got boring and i quit within a month. and the fact that something wins awards doesn't mean it's good.

look at how many @#!%^#!#$^! movies win "best picture" and you watch it and say WTF did i just watch? i want the last 3 hours of my life back.

also, re-read my original post. i never called GW bad, i just said it wasn't that great and that i got bored with it. two different things.

I've never once said that WoW was dead. In fact I didn't start playing until Wrath, the peak of the game. I sure as hell don't have a problem with saying WoW is dying right now though, notice how that isn't dead though.

For the record, the fact that something wins an award means it was good if the award is for something you can measure. If you'll look at the list of awards I posted you'll see that several of them are for something you can quantify. Trying to bad mouth movie awards in an effort to support your argument is just sad by the way. I happen to enjoy a lot of movies that get awards. So sorry that you are too butthurt to enjoy a friggin' movie.

"i never called GW bad, i just said it wasn't that great and that i got bored with it. two different things."

Yes, because the difference is so staggering between saying something isn't great and saying something is bad... rolling_eyes

GW sucks.

Edit: not to mention Oblivion launched in 2006, which is one of the best RPG games of all time.

Any "review" or "award" that chose GW over Oblivion I find to be suspect, if not laughable.

They are both quality titles and if you would have bothered comparing the awards the two got you would have seen that Oblivion did in fact beat out GW for Best RPG in most publications. I suspect your real reason for posting what you did has absolutely nothing to do with your true opinion though Mr. Troll. wink

I don't need to "compare awards"..I played them both... in 2006...

Even without the multi-player aspect, Oblivion is still the better game, period.

And again, I laugh at any "outfit" that gave their "award" for "Best RPG" to anyone but Bethesda that year.

Best MMO...perhaps..

Best RPG? No way in hell.

Edit: I'll go ahead and predict that Skyrim crushes GW2 in 2012 as well.

The point being that had you bothered to not be lazy you would have seen that GW only won a single Best RPG award, compared to Oblivion which won multiple Best RPG awards. So in other words you are blubbering for nothing because what you are saying is true.

I think Quazi is trying to say that even though all the awards that GW won are at its core opinions, the sheer number of them show that the game is well constructed, and is a solid creation. Whether or not each person enjoys that creation is another story.

Using that Oscar nomination analogy: any movie I've seen that was nominated for best picture, etc, I've always walked away from it saying, "OK, I get why it was nominated." Because really, they've all been well done in my book. But some of them I hated and some of them I loved -- that's where personal opinion comes into it, me thinks.

I won't touch the grammy's, cause all music lately sucks, so I never watch or follow that award show.

Guild Wars was a well made game, and I totally see why it got all those awards. Personally, I hated it because I couldn't jump (I know, weird, but it bugged me.)

First time I even bother to visit these forums in probably a couple months and what do I find? The same trolls fighting against each other over semantics, rhetoric, and a general pissing contest. What a surprise...

Well you guys can fight back on forth weather GW1 was a good game or not, i didnt care for it.

But your missing the fact that GW2 is comepletely different in just about every way from GW1, the only thing its keeping is the Lore. Arena net stated that they learned from GW1 and it wasnt a true MMORG. They are basically trying to take out all the things people dont like about other MMOs and making some bold changes(taking chances) with the no healer system and changing the questing leveling up system of A to B then back to A to get your rewards.

Im guessing more people that "hated" GW1 will actually like GW2 more than the people who "like" GW1

I wasn't a big fan of GW 1. I thought it was a shitty game.

Good thing I read this thread. After seeing all those awards I've suddenly realized how wrong I was!!!

I have to go now though. There is a shit load of crappy movies I need to watch and just as shitty CDs I need to buy. Not to mention stopping by the local Toyota dealership to see about the new Yaris that's winning awards like a mutha!!

Damn I'm gonna be busy.

Quasi can you help me out? Just make a post about every award winning product so we can get all our information in one place and not bother to have to think for ourselves. That seems to work out so well for you, why not give it a shot right?
