Anyone keep aquariums? I recently got my youngest son a little 10 gallon aquarium and put in an aquatic frog, big snail, 3 black Molly's, 3 paritus somethings, and an algae eater. The tank is awesome with some live plants and a cool rock for them to hide in.

Does anyone do salt water?

We had a huge salt water tank at the dealership in Illinois.

Before we moved we had quite a few koi.. Kept them in a 150 gallon stock tank. Gave them away because it was going to be too much of a hassle to maintain in an apartment.

We had numerous other set ups. The most fun, to me, were live plants in a small 10 gallon. Inside of that we had some shrimp (red cherries). The combination of the live plants was just pretty to me. I will dig around and see if I have any pictures..

They seemed like they were hard to take care of. Very touchy about the conditions in the tank (temperature, ph, lighting, hiding spots). Worth it though!

They have to have their little eco system ready to go when you place them in, maybe that was the issue - we may have rushed it tongue

But it's more popular than you would think! There's a small organization out here in phoenix that is really in to it. Some forums and such. People were helpful.

yep, during the power outage we lost our male betta (RIP Rhett) and my Angelfish, Angry Angel, he was an asshole.

We aren't replacing the Betta, so his bowl will be put away, we got a few more fish so now we have a small tank with 2 glowfish and a chinese algae eater, and a 10 gallon with 1, chinese algae eater, 1 blue molly, 2 cardinal tetras, and 5 glow tetras.

I love watching the tetras swim around in a school, we have a bunch of live plants and a bunch of plastic ones, I put a lot of my rock collection in the tanks and there is a castle of course.

now that I have a free bubbler from the betta tank, I'll have to figure out a bubble feature for the 10 gallon.

I test our water all the time, it is usually spot on, so I'm positive that the power outage was what killed them, just got too cold.

Yah. I keep a 50 gallon freshwater south american biotope.

I plan on trying for a 100gal+ salt once I have the money and a place big enough. There really isn't much of a point starting a salty unless you can do 100gal.

And contrary to popular belief, the bigger a tank, the easier it is to maintain.

Over the years I've done many types of tank setups, I think the most difficult was the brackish tank with cichlids.

I've never done a saltwater tank, my ex's brother in law had one and he put so much time and money into it, then in the end he let his fish starve to death because they got used to live food and he thought they'd eventually start eating the freeze dried instead.

I considered making a brackish tank. It would be easy here considering how hard our water is.

If I went salt, i'd have to make a reef environment. I can not compromise.

these days I just keep cheap fish, buy the smaller ones and hope they live the transport to their new home. I had a beautiful turquoise discus that I paid a fortune for that just up and died one day, it wasn't of old age or anything. That was the last time I kept expensive fish, I actually at the time gave away the rest of my fish and sold my tank, and this is the first tank setup I've had again since then.

the other fishy heartache was I had a mated pair of angelfish that when we were moving, my ex's nephew was taking some of the water out of the tank to make it easier to transport, and somehow accidentally (yeah right, the bastard) put the male angel down the garbage disposal. I had raised them from quarter size to biscuit size before they ever mated.

I've got a swarm of neon tetras that refer to as the borg collective, right now.

I'm starting a little group of german blue ram cichlids at the moment.

It's great when I feed the cichlids pellets because the neons try to eat them too and it's like they're playing basketball.

I'll probably be moving soon. So, I'll end up selling this tank and starting over.

I'm about to start a brackish in a 35 gallon hex. To start a salt water you want to start with no less than 50 gallons. If you have weather that changes a lot then you want a bigger tank as evaporation is huge. The chemistry levels must be checked daily as the slightest change can kill very expensive and delicate fish.

Your 10 gallon should be upgraded at some point as that size is high maintenance. The larger the tank the easier the maintenance. Many want salt water for the high color content. However, you can get a ton of color in a fresh water. When determining which fish you want I highly recommend Baensch Aquarium Atlas in determining which fish you want. That way you're using the whole tank and you're not offending the fish by putting them in an uninhabitable environment.

I love the tetras, they were the first fish I ever had in my families community tank when I was little.

I'll visit the good fish store soon and find one or two other fish for my tank, since right now I just have the Molly that inhabits the top portion, and the tetras near the bottom, I need a mid range fish or two, but I don't want the fish everyone from petco.

For that type of set up, you might consider Killis.

those are pretty, but a bit pricy for a small tank setup. The place I go is this tiny hole in the wall that is floor to ceiling fish tanks in a maze through the store, they have the largest selection I've ever seen in one place, and the prices are pretty reasonable too. I don't think I'd spend more than $10 on a fish right now.

I do tend toward more the discus/angel body type for fish, at least in what I find attractive. I probably should have went ahead and gotten the 40 gallon tank the other day when they were on sale for a dollar a gallon... it didn't include the lid for that price though, and the lid was another $30! Then I'd have to get a bigger filter and bigger heater and the original idea of a small tank just for the hell of it begins to wane towards the serious hobbyist tank. LOL

My ex has a 65 gallon tank that he likes to put big ugly fish into, I think he has an arowana right now.

I know, my blue molly is still traumatized and hiding in the plants even though the angel died a few days ago. The angel is how we ended up with 3 tank setups actually, he killed a golden angel, and a couple gouramis that were pretty mean too. The Molly was the only one to survive in that tank, we took the male betta out and put him in a seperate tank, and then the glowfish were being mean to the female betta...

Basically I didn't do enough research into how many of each species I should have to keep them from freaking out on one another. I still need to get three more glowfish to calm them down so they can school.

Who knows, maybe I'll go the cheap way out and just get some mid-range tetras of varied types.

Awesome info guys. Does anyone have any good website/forums they use for fish keeping? I'd like some food resources.
