Academy Award Nominations The Tree of Life -Best Picture I really missed this. I suspect these awards are many things, marketing, a popularity contest, and part insiders aesthetics.

I've only seen one of the nominees for best picture. That was the Help. Loved it. The Artist looks dumb. What kind of moron makes a silent picture in 2011/12? People should be slapped for nominating it in the first place.

Has anyone seen Tree of Life? I keep hearing things about it and I really like Brad Pitt. Maybe I should stream it.

I saw it when it first came out and wrote an Outpost review on it.

Tree of Life didn't work for me. Malick's dry philosophical style is fine when combined with a subject that is inherently interesting, like World War 2 or early colonization of the new world... but Tree of Life mixes it up with suburbia, and the suburbs are not interesting. There are a few sequences that are truly great (I was floored by the "memory" part) but overall it's a bit of a turgid mess. The Help was godawful obvious Oscar-bait shit and would only make sense if that bug-eyed redhead was playing a time traveler from the future. Midnight in Paris would be my pick from that list. The only other one I saw was Moneyball, which was definitely good but still a by-the-numbers (Ha) sports flick, albeit one that desperately wanted to be Fincher-esque in its direction. The Skin I Live In is #1. Spain has it out for Almodovar, can't believe they didn't submit it for best foreign film. The one they did submit didn't even get nominated. Dumbasses.

The Academy Awards is the original countdown show. People who are interested in film are going to pay attention to it either to pride themselves on having the same tastes as such an authority, or to ridicule the establishment for it's pompousness. Either way it's ratings, and in the attention industry ratings are money.

The Muppets should win for best original song, not that there is much competition there.

I was entertained by Moneyball but am unsure why we're glorifying the bastardization of baseball.
