Ok -- scenario...

Iran does bad things in the Strait of Hormuz and we(meaning our allies) boycott Iranian oil. Typically China would not participate in such an embargo thus making it worthless.

NOW... What if Obama got together with China and made the deal that he would stop the XL pipeline under any circumstances thus guaranteeing that the oil would flow west and across to China in the future for the promise that if Iran is embargoed over the Strait of Hormuz, China would participate instead of blocking it.

The oil from the XL pipeline was going to end up in China regardless, why would they care?

I guess my first concern is how long term some of these plans would be. Shutting down the strait would be a fleeting decision. They can monitor the sea almost at will and their ships can be rearranged with a few phone calls, so you have to be careful addressing long term plans like other countries (China) or construction projects (XL pipeline) because Iran could do a 180 while ink is still wet on the contracts. No reason to invest the next decade in something that could be unnecessary overnight.

You don't get it. It doesn't matter if the oil goes through western Canada or the Gulf; it's slated for China and isn't going to be sold here.

You might not realize that refined gasoline is currently the US's number one export, and that we're producing crude oil at an unprecedented rate. Just because some asshole on the radio tells you otherwise doesn't make it true.

Actually I never heard my theory anywhere...

Talk radio mainly thinks Obama is just placating environmentalist groups. I think that is a red herring.

It is. The pipeline was rejected by a state, Nebraska, and TransCanada had to route around it fairly recently. The application isn't even complete, and the republicans wanted Obama to approve an incomplete application. He rightly said no.

Montana's governor Schweitzer (D) has been making the talk show rounds after the announcement. Montana has *approved* their section of the pipeline and he is its biggest cheerleader, and he agrees that Obama made the right decision to not approve a project that didn't yet have a complete application, especially over objection from some of the states involved. There's a lot more moving parts to this than the news blips would have you believe.

There's a few on the left that worry about the environmental impact, and just like the right, we have others who will whip our uninformed extremists into an unjustified frenzy. The root problem here is NOT the environment, however. Pipelines are overall fairly friendly to the environment.

I expect that we will approve this project in about a year, no matter who is president. One side is grossly inflating the job (some) and "energy independence" (lol as this does NOTHING for that in the current plans), and the other side is casually dismissing them (there will be some jobs from this, and the market could change to where this oil goes to a domestic market instead of Asia).

If I were president, I'd definitely WANT this, even without a single job generated or a drop of oil going to us... it's leverage on Asia to have part of their energy supply go through us, plain and simple.

None of this really matters because the either premise of silva's theory was that oil would or would not be going to China when the oil is going there regardless of the pipeline.
