Subject: So I took the first job offered to me...
As per the advice of the OP. I value the advice of all, so I thank you. Anyhow, I worked one week and I absolutely hated it. I LOVE radio. Like I've left women behind to pursue my career in radio. I love it. I actively pursued getting back into it after getting laid off.

This job... wtf. I applied for a news director position. When I signed the paperwork it said "This isn't a news position so much as a public relations position." That was my first red flag. On my first day I stayed at a City Council meeting until 9pm. Got no story, because I wasn't there to get a story, I was there to be a presence for the radio station at the meeting. I got done at 9, had a 45 minute drive home and had to be back at the station at 5am.

Anyhow, on Friday I had the computer in the "news room" freeze on me mid report. That was the last straw. After a week of reading obituaries, doing stories on blood drives and silent auctions for a high school french club. Half the computers in the place were running Windows 98 and they weren't fast enough to run Windows 95.

So I got home Friday, drove the bar where I had been working part-time (also working part-time at another radio station) and asked to be put back on the schedule. They obliged and I called the lady at the radio station and quit.

The job made me HATE radio. I feel now like going back to school for another degree will be the best choice.

What a week.

Keep trying. You can get a great job one day in radio

My job is so bad that because of the snow I had to work 17 hours yesterday and it barely pays me enough money to live.

Normally no. It's why I won't be posting a poll on what I should get a degree in if I decide to go back to school.

If you always remember that radio is where you belong it will make the tedium bearable.

I don't see how a week in a lousy job that wasn't exactly as you expected could ruin your love for radio. Maybe you've just realized that landing a good gig isn't easy. Sometimes you have to go through a couple rough years to get to where you want to be. But if it was a dead end, you were right to quit.

I wouldn't give up on radio completely, though... keep looking for opportunities as you're studying or doing something else. Who knows what might come up?

Sorry to hear about your experience heladric. I actually know a couple radio personalities and both of them went form really enjoying it to hating it over the last decade. You are young enough that it might actually be a good time to look elsewhere.

You could always start a rock band. I'll join if you do. I don't know how to play an instrument so obviously i will be drums.

Jacor/Clear Channel completely destroyed the radio culture in Cincinnati. Fired all of the best personalities and reformatted for pop and talk over anything different.

Louisville, Kentucky.

Also, I worded that wrong. This job made me hate being a radio broadcaster while I was there. And while I was driving to work. I felt like I was going to a funeral everyday. Friday, when I went to the other radio station I was working at to get my W2, I felt like I couldn't wait for someone there to take a day off so I could fill in. I think the problem is I had spent 3 years in big time radio (Louisville is market 54) and I went to small time radio and I didn't like it. Sometimes people love it because it's got that home feeling, but not me.

So are you no longer interested in radio at all? Or is it that you're afraid radio is mostly that and you'll get stuck somewhere you hate?

I think you should stick to something media related. I think it suits you. You just have to find your place in it.

I'm interested in radio. But given the events of last July (being laid off) I feel like I should pursue something that will be more secure. I'm not sure though. I do love media, as it's just about as fun as can be. Unfortunately it's just not as lucrative as I'd like. Unless you're in the top 1%.

What you do for a living isn't about "fun"...it's about making a paycheck.

I hated every second of every day of my "career". I often thought of killing everyone, including myself, when I was at work. I guess some people get lucky and get paid to do stuff they don't hate....never met anyone who was that fortunate however.

Exactly. I work to live. I barely scrape by but to have a roof over my head, money for simple pleasures, a car, and food on the table is wonderful especially compared to my life before with my father.

I've been living paycheck to paycheck for 5 years. My job in radio was fun. My life outside of radio was enjoyable, but not nearly as fun as I'd like. That's why I'm going back to school, I think.

i personally enjoy my job. There are some stressful moments trying to meet some deadlines, but I like the work. Seeing stuff I design like ion sources, liquid helium cryostats, etc come to life from what I think in my head to what's in front of me is always interesting and engaging to me.

My job in the navy was mind numbingly boring. I spent 4 years training for it, and then when I got to do it....all I did was record what a couple of meters were reading every 15 minutes. 4 freaking years of school for that?

My job after the military was horrible. I sold people, which sounds sorta cool but was actually awful. Running a temp employee service exposed me to the worst of both the looking for a job and the looking to hire someone worlds. Most people looking for a job are god damn idiots, and most people looking to hire someone are fucking stupid. I made money by convincing the stupid people hiring someone that the idiot I had to offer was a better option than hiring some other idiot off the street.

Amazingly....quite a few of them believed it and paid me to hire my idiot. laugh

Every single day I was thankful for the almost limitless stupidity of most managers in this country.
