ONly thing I can find confirmation on is that he just went back (a few hours ago) in because of complications and is listed in either serious or critical. Can get solid info past that.

wow - can't believe I can crack a joke about this...

Anyway - Joe was cleared of any possible wrong doing in regards to diddling with kids himself. Only thing is he didn't push it further and go above his bosses and report it for further independent review/authorities.

Either way - considering how everything played out, he will most likely be remembered for getting canned because of Sandusky exploits.

I'm very sad to hear this. I'm not a PSU fan, but I think Paterno was wronged and deserved to coach the rest of the season and retire on his own terms. The PSU Board of Trustees should be ashamed of themselves in how they acted upon this situation.

RIP Coach.

Can't agree will Hela, he was the power at that school and he allowed evil to flourish rather than risk scandal and ridicule. The taint on his legacy is something he earned and deserved. As a leader of young men he should have known his job was to protect them, not the Penn State Football program.

Nevertheless, RIP Coach.

what crap.

it was his superiors, that he told and trusted to handle it properly, that did nothing and actively swept it under the rug. he may have been a legendary figure, but this whole "he was the ultimate authority" bs is nonsense.

in the absence of an imminent threat, there should have been an investigation - but nobody wanted facts, they wanted a brand name to tear down because nobody had heard of the people who were actually responsible for what happened.

You're fooling yourself if you don't realize that Paterno was the ultimate power at Penn State. If he had asked for action there would have been action. He did not, so there was not. The appearance is that it died on the administration's desks...

It died on Paterno's. Don't kid yourself.

You clearly fail to understand the power of a coach at a school like that.

Garth is spot on here. Paterno was the fall guy and was no more guilty than most of the schools administration; who all kept their jobs btw.

Ummm. No, they didn't sparky. They not only lost their jobs they face criminal prosecution.

You should learn facts before you stop STFUing.

All Paterno had to do was call for action and the school would have done whatever he wanted. Instead he turned "boffing up the butt" to "horseplay" and made the whole thing less than it was. This is not made up, this is in the transcripts. Paterno was in denial and the school followed his lead.

They are all guilty but excusing Paterno is ignorant. Football fills the coffers, football rules the day.

1) your'e deluding yourself if you think he had that much power.

2) he did ask for a investigation. many people rushed to assume that somehow he did it with a nudge or a wink that it shouldn't be taken seriously, but frankly for anyone who knew anything about the man thought that was entirely inconsistent with his character and the type of program he ran for his entire life.

we already know from McQueary that what he saw wasn't fully relayed in the first place the same way it was later to Paterno's superiors, and frankly i don't think Paterno would have been able to cognitively process the full extent of it, which he pretty much said himself in the WaPo interview when he said he felt the right thing to do was to report the matter to people he thought would properly handle it.

the public wanted blood, and they got it.

It was stated by the prosecutor and sheriffs, quite often. It will be in any story about this.

In fact it was stated by Paterno himself.

You just said he should have done more.

So your fundamental failure is to understand the kind of power a coach like this has at his school.

"I'm just hoping Jim Tressel doesn't fire me!" - tOSU admins.

Read anything from anyone who is from and knowledgable about PSU. They will be happy to tell you that Joe Pa ran that school for decades. Admins do not bring millions of dollards to the school. Football does. PSU is a footbal school and Joe Pa WAS PSU football.

You should also probably look into the former professors who complained that Paterno insisted on disciplining football players and openly requested (read required) that no outside people be involved. "I can handle my own players, I know best how to discipline them."

Not an exact quote but good enough.

Again, apology accepted. That's ok Garth. You usually are wrong when you disagree with me. Most people are.

It was unfortunate all around but while we are worrying about victims lets remember the victims that happened after Joe Pa stuck his head in the sand. Victims that were raped at PSU facilities and while attending PSU football games in a special box given to their tormentor by the university. The real victims, you know. The ones Garth is forgetting about while he cries for Joe Pa.

I'm sure Joe Pa never saw Sandusky sitting in his box, or on the sidelines, with other young men he failed to protect.

For what...a decade after the original incident? raised_brow

I'm going to stop because the man's dead. He paid for his inaction. May he RIP.

not what i said - i asked who wouldn't feel like they could have done more with the benefit of hindsight.

and Bonk, you wouldn't call 911 unless you saw the crime in progress. McQueary should have called 911. JoePa reported it, as he was supposed to, to the head of the university police department and the head of the Athletic department, who both actually did cover up what happened.

making Paterno the fall guy for their negligence isn't about justice, it's mob mentality vengeance.

give us a break Nnanji, you don't care about the victims any more than the rest of the mob. all you have at this point are ad-hominem attacks.

The thing is in some of these organizations the only place crimes like this are reported is to the upper management and many times the upper management hushes it up and does nothing.

This is what happened with the Catholic Church. Just call 911 and let the cops handle it. Dont try to handle it institutionally

Guess again Garth. I do care....college football is a very large part of my history and life. I care very much that an icon of college football failed so miserably as a leader of men and that he allowed his program to be used as a vehicle for a known pedophile to commit his crimes.

And, like many, I hold him responsible.

wow - can't believe I can crack a joke about this...

As he should.

I'm very sad to hear this. I'm not a PSU fan, but I think Paterno was wronged and deserved to coach the rest of the season and retire on his own terms. The PSU Board of Trustees should be ashamed of themselves in how they acted upon this situation.

He had a positive influence on thousands of people who came thru the universities football program. He fell short at the end of the standard that he himself had set. That probably is what hasten the end. He indeed did lose the will to live.

Garth, while it is true that you don't call 911 unless you are witnessing 'a crime in progress' as you put it, what I keep coming back to is this. "Alerting the authorities". And I don't mean PSU authorities but the real authorities. If you hear that a child in your neighborhood is being raped/molested or anything like that...by a trusted source supposedly...you alert the authorities (not call 911). I think it is what I would do because, again you are right, it's hard to place yourself 'in the moment'. But when you are in that kind of position of authority yourself that is what you are entrusted to do. That is what he failed to do. We all know that now. He did pay the price for it.

So, while I think he did leave a football legacy behind that will not be matched, I think he also left that failure behind that cannot be overlooked. He failed and nothing will excuse that including his prior legacy or his death. In my opinion. Granted, we don't have to dance on his grave either.

There is little doubt that Joe Pa could have done more, even he said it himself. However, there are some interesting twists to this story such as the details about why the DA declined to pursue the matter and where that DA is today and all manner of other things that are VERY VERY messy for PA.

If I were a betting person, I would bet that Paterno was satisfied with his treatment by Penn State, and in fact, I'd bet he suggested it - partly as a way of him to do some penance by sacrificing his legacy for his own admitted shortcoming in the way of "doing more", and partly as a way to draw fire away from all the other ugly parts of this story - that go well beyond the University.

Incidentally, for those who weren't aware, Paterno was not actually fired, he technically retired, his pension and benefits and such intact. Obviously if he had not retired, he would have been fired, but the fact remains...
