Subject: Connection to the server has been lost!
Hey guys,

I know this isn't the technical forum but I was hoping this would get more traffic as the Tech forum seems pretty stagnant. Trying to make a return to AC. When I go to log in, I get the connectivity vial fully blue, but the update progress vial never loads anything and then after ~20 seconds I get the message "Connection to the server has been lost."

I know this is a known issue that lots of people have had and I've done just about everything I was told to do by the "guides" including the port forwarding and whatnot to no avail. I was just going to ask as a last ditch effort if anyone knew of any way to fix this. If I can't, I'm unfortunately not going to be able to return, which is a downer hah. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I know with problems similar to this they suggest removing the portal.dat file and letting the game repatch itself, but if you aren't even connecting for the download I'm not sure if that would work.

I've been having a problem where the game dc's me on portal in the first time I try to log onto DT or FF, but then it always lets me in if I log in again before ~5 min.

Also I know some wireless routers have problems with AC. Linksys?

Yes, it's a Linksys E1000.

I haven't been able to download anything yet nor have I been able to log into the game. This is basically a new install of the client and patches. Like I said, can get to the vials screen with full connection vial, but nothing in the progress vial, and then I get the error message.

Have you heard of any solutions with the Linksys routers?

Edit: And my ISP is Bellsouth fastaccess DSL

Try updating the firmware, if changing router is not an option, plug to your modem directly.

I'll try updating the firmware now, thanks.

Can I plug my desktop directly into the router, bypassing it, and still have wireless internet for the rest of my house (man that's a noob question lol)? If not, that's not really an option as there are other people in the house that use the wireless connection.

Sorry, as I've researched this more I realized how little info I gave.

Windows 7
Kaspersky Pure
Linksys E1000 router
Bellsouth Fast Access DSL

I updated the firmware to no avail.

I talked for 1.5 hours to the linksys people and I think they took me to the cusp. We set up "Port Range Triggering" for ports 9000-9013. He told me I have to talk to Bellsouth about converting my internet to a Private IP (?) so that I can set my router in Bridge Mode using PPPoE. I'm not a computer savvy individual so if any of that previous statement is out of order/makes no sense, I apologize. Nevertheless, he told me I could basically spit out those buzzwords to the customer service person at bellsouth and they'd set it up and give me a user name and password for my internet connection and then I could call the Linksys people back to finish the conversion of my router to bridged-mode. Hopefully he's right and it'll work because I'm itching for some AC haha.

I tried all the setting up a static IP and port forwarding and what not, turned off Kaspersky, and did basically everything else I could find in the different threads on these forums and the AC forums, so if this doesn't work, I guess I'm SOL.

If anyone has any other suggestions that I haven't tried, I'm all ears. Thanks guys.

Can always just throw down $15-20 for a new router, too.

HOLY CRAP it seems to be working. For those hundreds of others that seem to be having a similar issue, this is what worked for me (Brace yourself, it's complicated):

1. I had to contact my router company (Linksys) and they helped me configure the ports to open (Port triggering, not Port forwarding like the guide turbine tells you to do, though the ports are the same - 9000 through 9013).
2. I had to contact my ISP (Bellsouth Fast Access DSL) who walked me through how to change my router to bridged mode (I don't really know what that does, I just know it works).
3. Then I had to call Linksys back and have them help me configure the router settings for the new bridged setting.
3a. This involved going into my network settings (Windows 7) and adjusting the IP address of my computer.

All this sounds confusing and exhausting (and it was) but I will say the customer service people were incredible. The Linksys guy orginally had no idea WTF I was talking about and admitted he had never gone that deep into the router configurations. He had to default to his supervisor who thankfully knew what was what. At one point, the linksys guy was on the same turbine page I was trying to tell me what steps to take haha. That being said, they were awesome.

I hope this helps someone because it was an arduous task. See you all in game!

PS this is utterly ridiculous the amount of hoops we have to jump through to access the game. Many, many people apparently have had this trouble and it's silly to think that no other MMO/Multiplayer game has these issues. You'd think Turbine would have addressed this years ago or at least come up with a clear and coherent guide to follow to fix this, as I saw threads from as early as 2004 on this issue.

Whenever I do something like that it never works and it's always just time wasted. Hit me up if you get on DT, Araanidim the Lost.

Congratulations for getting it working.

Yes it is ridiculous the hoops people have to jump through to get AC working. God(or your deity of choice) only knows how many customers Turbine has lost over this as it is not an isolated issue.

The issue falls in the antiquated network code AC1 uses. It's been a while but I believe AC uses the NAT protocol whereas most ISP's are set up using the NAPT protocol. Some are able to utilize both without issue, as you found out, some aren't without massive time spent by the end user to fix it.

I'm no programmer and I have no idea how difficult it would be to revise the network protocol of AC. I'm assuming since it hasn't happened even though it's been a known issue for at least 7 years, it's either too difficult, or Turbine has deemed it not a big enough issue to worry about.

For the record, I came back the ToD was released and I spent my entire 30 days free time working with my ISP and Turbine to get the game working. In the end I literally had the lead tech for my ISP at my house on speaker phone with the people from Turbine trying everything we could think of to get it to work...I know all about ridiculous.

I can confirm this solution works as I directed a friend of mine to this thread that was having trouble getting AC to work.

He followed the steps the OP did and now has access to AC.
