Subject: SOPA is dead?
http://mashable.com/2012/01/20/sopa-is-dead-smith-pulls-bill/

Lamar Smith, the chief sponsor of SOPA, said on Friday that he is pulling the bill “until there is wider agreement on a solution.”

“I have heard from the critics and I take seriously their concerns regarding proposed legislation to address the problem of online piracy,” Smith (R-Texas) said. “It is clear that we need to revisit the approach on how best to address the problem of foreign thieves that steal and sell American inventions and products.”

Smith also released the following statement on Friday:

“We need to revisit the approach on how best to address the problem of foreign thieves that steal and sell American inventions and products. “The problem of online piracy is too big to ignore. American intellectual property industries provide 19 million high-paying jobs and account for more than 60% of U.S. exports. The theft of America’s intellectual property costs the U.S. economy more than $100 billion annually and results in the loss of thousands of American jobs. Congress cannot stand by and do nothing while American innovators and job creators are under attack.”

“The online theft of American intellectual property is no different than the theft of products from a store. It is illegal and the law should be enforced both in the store and online.

“The Committee will continue work with copyright owners, Internet companies, financial institutions to develop proposals that combat online piracy and protect America’s intellectual property. We welcome input from all organizations and individuals who have an honest difference of opinion about how best to address this widespread problem. The Committee remains committed to finding a solution to the problem of online piracy that protects American intellectual property and innovation.”

The move comes after widespread protest on the Internet on Wednesday by Wikipedia, Reddit and others. The sites signaled their displeasure with the bill by going dark. That day, several Congressmen dropped their support for SOPA and its Senate counterpart, PIPA. The latter bill has also been taken off the table for now.

SEE ALSO: Is There a SOPA Alternative Both Sides Can Live With?

“In light of recent events, I have decided to postpone Tuesday’s vote on the PROTECT IP Act,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) in a statement Friday morning.

Smith’s stance comes just two days after he told The Wall Street Journal that he didn’t plan to back down on SOPA, telling the newspaper he expected to “move forward” with the bill in February.

The lead sponsor of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) legislation, Republican Senator Lamar Smith, has revealed he will be postponing a SOPA markup hearing on the bill after taking into account people’s concerns about the controversial act.

Nough said.

PIPA is dead as well.

That doesn't mean the bastards in congress wont get another bill written by hollywood lobbyists that tries to do exactly the same thing...but is worded differently and titled something like "Ensuring the freedom of the internet forever act".

I just hope all you angry taters remember this and who during election time this year. Looks like the republican owned house, who promised jobs and prosperity, are more worried about saving hollywood than the country that stupidly elected them.

I was listening to Tucker Carlson on a morning show today, and I realize morning radio is not the place to get information but he actually brought up some good points. The host suggested that Congress will just hide SOPA/PIPA in a "Patriotic" piece of legislation that will get by the average voter. But Tucker Carlson said that is unlikely to happen because Google, Wiki, etc. are too astute when it comes to legislation that will harm their interests. So if that is true I think that the public will be alerted if they try and sneak in a SOPA v2.0 under a different, more appealing name.

The ideas behind the two bills are far from dead, but for now we can breath a sigh of relief. And regulator is just being a partisan idiot again, if you look up the supporters and opponents of the bills between the two houses, for the Democrats there are 39 supporters and 61 opponents, for the Republicans there are 22 supporters and 75 opponents.

But talk about some seriopus BS in that statement. Talking about piracy stealing money and jobs from Americans... WTF about all these companies outsourcing then? Outsourcing has destroyed more jobs than piracy ever could.

Until a couple of days ago, nearly every single Republican was on record as being for it, and about half of the democrats.

Republicans jumped ship fast after the 18th however, and some Democrats still haven't figured out yet just how unpopular this crap really is. Republicans have always been better at picking up on trends than Democrats....this bill is no exception to that.

But anyway, no this really isn't a totally partisan thing. Even though the main sponsors of the bills were almost all republicans, they had plenty of help from many democrats on it.

Actually, I don't need it. According to this site you are not only completely wrong about "nearly every single Republican was on record as being for it" but there is nearly an even split in the supporters and opponents from each party with there being slightly more Democrats who supported the legislation along with slightly more who opposed it (including my man Mark Warner who was one of 4 senators to originally oppose it). This data is from Wednesday, which I feel is fair because no one knew how the public would react to the media blackout.

You are talking about a national as a whole that focuses on things that could hardly ever change. Taking guns away, abortion... things that people base their votes on that even the President can't completely do away with nor completely let the flood gates open. We really are a collection of simpletons here.

The current problem at hand is keeping the public interested in the affairs of Technology regulation. The general populace has such a short lifespan on important matters that it it won't surprise me if they forget about the supporters of this legislation in November and vote them in again.

And from what I understand, Lamar Smith is in an old, rich, white gerrymandered district north of San Antonio so he is practically immune to getting ousted.

I actually think that's what you want...

Ideally they wouldn't have let themselves be whored out and lobbied to pass this right-depriving special interest bill in the first place. They will be again, in a few months, or a year, or a few years. You'd hope they would remember what happened this time around, but they won't due to campaign funds and lobbyists. This is just another round of the fight, and honestly that fight should have been brought years ago to the DMCA due to vague terminology.

I have two hopes now, one desperate in nature and one up to the whims of the whimsical masses. The more realistic one is that the fight against copyright oppression continues by the masses. The other is that the masses extend their vision of rights and liberty outside of cyberspace and into the real world towards bills like the Patriot Act, or the current practices of presidential administrations such as going to to war without the permission of congress on behalf of the people.

Given the average person's hopes, actions, and personal troubles, I will settle for a free internet. At least with a free internet there is safety net, a medium of free speech and organization through which anyone and everyone no matter their perceived limitations or financial means may communicate, educate, organize, and speak to any ends which they peacefully seek. This by far is the most powerful tool to ensure liberty survives. Communication, free uncensored communication, is a must. If the masses become so used to it that they cannot conceive a life without it... good.
