At our old place the TV was in the living room so we were in there all the time. At our new place we have a "family room" and the TV is in there. As far as I can tell, the living room at our new place is just a museum for pointless furniture.

Remove the furniture and install a stripper pole in that room. When the wife stares at you just tell her it wasn't being used anyways.

I had a house like that once.

Got rid of it, moved in-town, now we have a florida room and a smaller living room, open concept. Throw all the doors open for small parties, close the doors to get kids and adults some private space. Works fine.

A separate living room is pretty much only useful if you throw larger parties regularly and need some separate space for guests to mingle into.

Our common area space is an open concept. No walls between the kitchen, living room and dining room.

separate living areas are nice when you have parties. We actually put a big screen and a bunch of game boxes in ours, so that tells you what kind of parties we are having the most.

So in this scenario your living room is analogous to your brain?

I usually only walk thru my living room if I have someone new visiting and they don't realize everyone uses the side door by the garage that goes into the kitchen....because that's where I'll be anyway unless I'm asleep.

I sat on my couch for the first time since I bought the place just last week. It was weird. Nice looking couch, but not very comfortable.

Since you aren't using your living room - I think you should let some homeless people or OWS people use it.

The question stands. What is the difference?

If it's just a second living room because you have more money than sense I guess I get it. Is there supposed to actually be some difference?

Traditionally the family room has been for lounging, relaxing, and family activities, where as the living room has been designed for slightly more formal functions.
This is why living rooms are off of the front door to a home and family rooms are usually a bit removed.

Living rooms are too look nice, family rooms (or dens) are to enjoy yourself in. That's in a house that has both of course.

I always hated living rooms when I was a kid...well when we went to a relatives house that had one that is. We sure as hell didn't. I thought it was stupid that the kids weren't allowed in the room because they might "mess it up".

WTF have a room that you can't use? It's stupid. I'll never have something like that when I grow up....I thought as a kid doh!

The way this house is built, there really isn't anything else to do with the space and it's not like I need the room. I bought a much smaller house and it's still too god damn big. Next time, I'm getting a condo or something.

We kinda have the same thing, but they're in an L-shape and doesn't work quite right. Not that it matters - we usually don't entertain more than 10 or so people - but I envy people who have a true "grand room". As it is our living room just has some tables and cozy chairs and is used mostly for reading.

The house we had before in the city had a formal living/dining room.

It was to the left of the front door.

We used it maybe twice for family dinners.

Our den opened to the kitchen and had a bar between. That's where we entertained mostly. Or on the back porch.

Now we have a huge room the runs the width of the house. Den,kitchen and dining area.
I gave my mother in law my formal dining room furniture, she has a separate dinging room.

My house now is more comfy.

I believe the living room is a mutant descendant of the parlor or sitting room of old. It is the room near the main entrance that is used to entertain guests in a more formal setting and without introducing them to the rest of the household space. You fill it with higher end furniture and decorations to demonstrate your earthly success and crap like that. In my family, this is the 'front' room rather than the living room.

The family room is where the family actually lives and spends time hanging out. The furniture may be a little more beaten up, but the better tv / entertainment system is there, and the carpet probably has some stains in it.

When I was a kid, my best friend's living room was carpeted and upholstered in white and contained both the marble fire place and the baby grand piano, along with some important looking bookshelves and artwork. This room was immediately to the left as you stepped into the house, and the first thing you really saw besides the grand staircase curving up to the second floor. Their family room was brown and grey shag carpeting with brown and black upholstery on torn up furniture, but that's where the remote controlled tv and the betamax was tongue

Why do you call it the living room if what it's for is anything but actually living?

Growing up our "living room" was apparently what you people call a "family room."

The new house has a traditional late 19th century layout. Although it has been modernized, there isn't an open concept floor plan like in my current house. I don't know how much I will miss that. The living room has been turned into a nice family room, but it is separated from the kitchen by a hallway. Off of that is a huge formal dining room with pocket doors and a pseudo-turret, so we'll probably use that for entertaining.

I have no idea. As I said we called it a front room, but living room is a much more common term. Perhaps irony?

This thread has actually been an educational experience for me. How often does that happen on the Outpost?

I always thought a living room was where you actually lived. Since that's how it was in my house.

Apparently in Real America (tm) a Living Room is where you don't live and a Family Room is where you all direct your attention towards a screen.

The terms I'm used to are...

"Living Room"

"Den"

The Den is slang for "where the family hangs out". The "Living Room", ironically, is not.

Sometimes I've heard "Living Room" (the museum furniture room), and "Family Room" (which makes a little more sense as the room where family actually congregates).

I usually use "Front Room" to describe the largely unused room by the front door, and use "Family Room" and "Living Room" interchangeably to describe the room our TV / PS3 / etc are in.

I tend to think of a "den" as a room in the middle of the house that often doubles as an office. It's not a very common term that I use.

You guys must be anti social. We have big family gatherings a few times a year and dinner parties/poker/get togethers at least once or twice a month. Having two rooms that are separate and relatively private from each other is awesome.

Lrn2friend

PS. I have a living room/family room/den(office)

Everyone calls the family room the room you hang and watch tv in and the living room you entertain in.

I live in an Flat so we only have the one common space like a lounge/living room. When we have people over its almost always for a BBQ and everyone is outside in the courtyard. We have a strange concept to our kitchen to, it has 2 doors that open out into the courtyard with just the kitchen bench (sink and cooktop) in between them. It works well for entertaining
