the notion that everything is supposed to work out well for everyone, and if it isn't, it's just proof that someone is getting screwed.

Hamsters cannot thrive in the ocean. There is no amount of sacrifice that you can demand from the starfish that will allow hamsters to thrive in the ocean. The fact that hamsters are drowning is not the fault of the starfish.
