SOPA and PIPA don't have a chance in hell of passing now. This incident proves the government doesn't need more power to "combat web piracy", they can already shut down a foreign website and arrest people in other countries without it.

Anonymous will help give the government justification to eventually make the internet less not more free

The next time some idiot starts spouting off about how wonderful "cloud computing" is.....they need to be told that all the info you put into that "cloud" will be lost forever if someone else using it decides to upload a couple of old My little Pony episodes and the fed shuts down the entire server because of it.

Unfortunately, minus the stupid smiley he is probably correct. They will use them just like they used terrorist to create the justification they need to pass laws that will continue to strip us of our freedoms and rights just like with the patriot act.

Governments fear the internet. They just need the justification to make it less free.

While i don't agree with SOPA in its current form, Megaupload is one of the sites that a good piracy bill would stop anyway.

Why? The owners aren't putting the content up.

It's just an upload server. As long as the owners respect takedown requests, they are doing nothing wrong.

Only hours before the DoJ and Universal sites went down, news broke that Megaupload, a massive file sharing site with a reported 50 million daily users, was taken down by federal agents. Four people linked to Megaupload were arrested in New Zealand and an international crackdown led agents to serving at least 20 search warrants across the globe.

I may have misunderstood what you meant. I thought you meant bullmod as in, not true.

But yeah now I know what you mean, it smells like foul play. It could very well be true, and anon is falling exactly where the gubmint wants them to fall in.

But still, at least it shows that we won't tolerate bullmod from people who want more control when they should have less

The bill clearly over reaches and smacks of being written by people who have no understanding of how the internet works. It is already a dead bill walking.

Having said that, I would have no issue with a far more targeted bill that went directly after those doing the theft.

Sweden for instance would face as many economic sanctions as I could find until it did something about its piracy issues. They are a free and sovereign nation totally within their rights to allow it but we are just as free to sanction them. I would most definitely invalidate any and all Swedish copyrights in the US making all of their contributions free for anyone in the US to copy and sell or use at not cost. That would go for any country that willingly allows copyright infringement.

Obama Says So Long SOPA, Killing Controversial Internet Piracy Legislation

The growing anti-SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) support that has swept through the gaming and Internet community found a very big ally today. With websites like Reddit and Wikipedia and gaming organizations like Major League Gaming prepared for a blackout on January 18th – the same day that the House Judiciary Committee hearing on HR 3261was scheduled in Washington, DC – President Barack Obama has stepped in and said he would not support the bill. SOPA has been delayed, for now. The House has agreed to revisit the issue next month, but they now know the White House will veto any bill that’s not more narrowly focused.

Much to the chagrin of Hollywood, the Entertainment Software Association (which has been a backer of the bill from early on), and Internet domain company GoDaddy.com (which lost many accounts as a result of its support for the bill); SOPA has been shelved. The Motion Picture Association of America, one of the bill’s largest sponsors, is expected to regroup.

California congressman Darrell Issa, who has been opposed to the bill from the beginning, praised the Internet action that has swept like a virus across the Web the past week.

“The voice of the Internet community has been heard,” said Issa. “Much more education for members of Congress about the workings of the Internet is essential if anti-piracy legislation is to be workable and achieve broad appeal.”

But there remains another similar bill, Protect IP (the Enforcing and Protecting American Rights Against Sites Intent on Theft and Exploitation Act), that poses a problem for gamers and Internet users. This legislation is scheduled to go before the Senate on January 24th.

Both SOPA and Protect IP attempt to combat online piracy by preventing American search engines like Google and Yahoo from directing users to sites distributing stolen content. Both bills also would enable people and companies to sue if their copyright was infringed. Obama has come out against both bills, which killed SOPA and puts pressure on senators come January 24th. The full White House response can be read here.

“Any provision covering Internet intermediaries such as online advertising networks, payment processors, or search engines must be transparent and designed to prevent overly broad private rights of action that could encourage unjustified litigation that could discourage startup businesses and innovative firms from growing,” said The White House. “We expect and encourage all private parties, including both content creators and Internet platform providers working together, to adopt voluntary measures and best practices to reduce online piracy.”

Just like piracy itself, this debate isn’t over. Expect more bills to move forward, although the wording in future legislation is expected to be more narrowly focused in an attempt to appease the current administration. But given the current economic climate and the upcoming Presidential election, there could be a different administration entering The White House soon, changing the landscape for these types of bills.

Hmm, so does China have anything worth stealing, seeing as how they're always ripping off US patents and copyrights? Or are we just there to exploit their cheap labor, which won't be as cheap as their living standards improve?

And how many Swedish patents make money for Swedes? Trade balance might not mean a whole lot but us negating their patents on things like drugs or whatever would most certainly cost them huge sums.

Seriously dude, you've read one to many emo repub blogs about Pirate Bay.
TPB for instance isn't a major player anymore in file sharing, and hasn't been for years.

Sweden as a society stands for freedom, liberty and individual responsability.

That the government doesn't want to casually bend to American private interests (read=media companies), even though it's a small player in some respects on the world stage is a good thing.

Well the people creating the media deserve to get paid. No one is making you watch their movies, listen to their music or play their vdeo games.

You're definitely right, their products should get a chance to compete on the market and make a profit, that's a problem today with free unregulated filesharing.

Though that doesn't mean it's OK for knee-jerk laws to be made that filter and observe peoples communications and guarantee companies income many times over forever for media they had a hand in funding. Especially not by foreign private interests in the US, they have little to no jurisdiction here, for good reason.

It's something for courts to analyze, evaluate and decide, people who are interested in the big picture.

Eodoll loves to suck on his corporate master's peen.

Nothing in the SOPA bill deserves to stay, let alone even discuss.

f*ck SOPA, f*ck PIPA.

SOPA/PIPA had nothing to do with the megaupload take-down.

The megaupload site(s) were offering direct downloads of current release films. Sorry, that's illegal - you don't even need DMCA since it was a pay site which made it slam-dunk pirating.

All of the crybabies out there seriously make me want to go on a shooting spree. If you want the movie farking pay for it. If you don't pay for it you're stealing it. If you steal and get caught you get in trouble. Accept that, or STFU already.

they remove content when asked. Tough shit. Youtube has copyrighted content on it too, and removes it when requested.

your argument is invalid

You would think people who run a large filesharing site would be smart enough not to talk about copyrighted material being allowed to stay on their site in emails.

Sorry, that's illegal

I don't think anyone is contesting that fact; the issue is the heavy handed nature of corporate funded government action.

An individual downloading a film is committing a petty crime, and the punishment, if caught, should fit its petty nature. The government's actions are along the line of bombing a village to root out the thieves.

As previously stated, it is true that this is a crime; however, our government is spending way too much energy on this, and the reason is they are (at least) partially co-opted by corporate interests. Screw the corporations. coffee

Agreed - especially since I'm one of those individuals who, upon occassion, commits that petty crime. tongue

My point was about them going after a site that was obviously conducting illegal activities, and making major bank doing it.
