A lot of major brands started doing "throwback" labels of their popular beverages that contained cane sugar instead of corn syrup. This was a result of corn prices getting closer to cane sugar, likely because of the clean fuel initiative that subsidized corn prices.

You can still buy "mexican" cokes/pepsis and so forth in most grocery stores, but they cost more as they are imported.

I drink Club Soda with low sodium. You get the fizz but none of the crap in it.

Takes a few weeks to get used to the flavor though but it is much healthier.

Not sure exactly how much of what is in it, the label literally says sugar/glucose-fructose. But it does taste completely different from the stuff I've drunk in the US. So much so that I actually won't even drink it in the States, and I'm a 3+ can a day sort of Coke drinker...

there's no difference between corn syrup and sugar to your body. your body breaks them down exactly the same. what you should beware of is that they are both toxic and unless you exercise after consumption equal to that of what you drink, 35% of all fructose is turned to fat like alcohol. thus you're far better off avoiding sugar all together. diet drinks are sweetened with questionable substances id avoid them too. club soda and lime, or just water is the way to go.

I preferred lighter colored drinks of the diet variety for the most part. Now that I am making syrups though I have played with different sweeteners and prefer raw cane sugar or light brown sugar.

Diet. I also like the 10 calorie version of Dr. Pepper.

The main draw for sodas for me is the carbonation, not the sweetness. I like having a can every day, but having 1 non-diet soda every day would be very unhealthy.

Now when I drink normal soda it doesn't really seem better. Just more sweet, which I'm not huge on.

real sugar all the way. i don't mind a lot of the diet drinks but i won't drink any of the aspartame ones as that gives me a headache. like once i stopped drinking diet sodas, i stopped having so many migraines and when i do drink them now, i get a headache. so i'm pretty convinced that it was the aspartame.


edit: i will take a stevia sweetened drink over one sweetened with real sugar unless it's coffee. i dunno what happens with it and coffee but it makes me gag.

the difference is that they put HFCS in everything, in a lot of stuff that is unnecessary for it to be there even. Its not the same as sugar, no matter what the corn lobby tries to tell you.

I bet I've drank less than 2 since my stroke. I was allowed to have it in the hospital but totally lost my taste for any soda, especially my diet Pepsi. It all tastes horrible now. grin

I have the same issue with stevia, or the one I use that's half stevia and half sugar.... it just doesn't taste right in coffee. I've gone to just using flavored creamer and not adding anymore sweetener.

They put sugar into a lot of things as well, it's not limited to HFCS. i was not implying that one is better then the other they both contain fructose which is bad for you, the end.

Diet usually. I'll go the regular or cane sugar route occasionally, but in general it's not worth the calories. Diabetes and obesity do more to kill you than whatever toxicity claim is floating around this week. If you treat soda as an occasional treat then have at it, but if you're going to drink the stuff by the gallon at least mitigate the damage with the diet versions.

Going to try the club soda with lime thing next time I go grocery shopping though. I think it's the carbonation I crave more than the flavor of soda...

Exactly -- don't fall for that hype you see on the commercials where they say sugar is sugar...I guess the biggest reason there's so much of it in the US it because it's easier to make and transport as HFCS over refined sugar.

I like the Natural Sierra Mist but I also like the Throwback Mt. Dew.

I wasn't referring to it making people fat, though it certainly doesn't help. It has characteristics that create a reaction in your body that is not unlike addiction. You eat foods that have it as a main ingredient and instead of sating your body's appetite, your body craves more instead. The net effect is that you end up eating more than you would with other kinds of sweeteners. It doesn't affect everyone the same way, obviously, and it isn't a guaranteed trip to fatsville, either.

It's a simple fact that fructose is metoblized in to fat at a much faster rate that sucrose and other sugars. Adding fructose to your diet means you can get fatter, even if you eat the same number of calories per day. HFCS may not be the devil, but it sure is a demon that hinders people from losing weight gained from overeating.

hfcs! I don't care much for regular sugar. I'll drink water before I'll drink diet soda. My wife tried to hand me some orange soda made with stevia the other night. Nastiest thing ever.

I've gone from drinking damn near a six pack of regular Coke/Pepsi a day to maybe one or two Coke Zero's a day.
I think that has contributed greatly to my weight loss last year (90 lbs).

I can't stomach the taste of any kind of diet soft drink. Coke Zero and Pepsi Max I can drink (prefer Coke Zero).
But if I'm out and a place only has regular I can drink that (Coke Zero tastes enough like the real thing that I haven't become one of those people who talk about how they can't stand regular after shifting to diet).

Don't drink much soda, but I don't really care if it's HFCS or real sugar when I do. It tastes pretty similar to me.

I cannot tolerate diet soda though, tastes gross.

I don't drink regular soda. I don't really drink anything with calories in it unless it's milk or vegetables. I'm a big fan of pure stevia and have been since before it was FDA approved.

Sucrose is fructose. Sucrose is a fructose bound to a glucose or a 50% fructose and 50% glucose. HFCS is 55% fructose and 42% glucose. I'm sure that extra 5% is totally what tipped Johnny into obesity. True, fructose bypasses a key regulatory step in the metabolic pathway but that argument ignores every other regulatory process in the human body and forgets that HFCS is being compared to sucrose and not pure glucose or complex carbohydrates.
