The MPAA Says Blackout Protests Are an Abuse of Power

Tomorrow huge sites like Wikipedia and Reddit will "blackout" in protest of SOPA, and the MPAA doesn't like the behavior of these "technology business interests"one bit.

The statement comes down from none other than MPAA Chairman and former Senator from Connecticut Chris Dodd:

It is an irresponsible response and a disservice to people who rely on them for information and use their services. It is also an abuse of power given the freedoms these companies enjoy in the marketplace today. It's a dangerous and troubling development when the platforms that serve as gateways to information intentionally skew the facts to incite their users in order to further their corporate interests.

Even if this is really only an obligatory posturing statement from the monolithic organization, it's almost laughably heavy-handed and hyperbolic. As private enterprises, Wikipedia and Reddit have the right to exercise free speech the same way as anyone else. More importantly, though, it's awfully brazen of the MPAA to accuse the sites of inhibiting access to information when SOPA is essentially a pro-censorship bill.

What about SOPA or PIPa has people so riled up?

I don't get it. Block torrents. Who cares? Why is that bad?

Thus far the MPAA hasn't really demonstrated that it's more than a group of moneygrubbing mouth-breathers. Therefore a move like this doesn't surprise me.

So, the biggest argument against SOPA is the Federal government shouldn't be able to enforce copywrite and trademark restrictions on intellectual property?

Or, as put so eloquently in another thread, "If I Rick Roll someone I get ass raped in prison for 20 years".

Ridiculous.

MPAA/RIAA are outdated and useless organizations that should be dissolved. Put the power back in the hands of artists and their fans.

You're not getting it. Both versions of the law essentially remove due process when it comes to "protecting intellectual property". Essentially, I can cry foul about a site you own and operate and get your web presence completely shut down without ever involving the police, a court, or any law agency. Oh, and you can't do jack about it because you are guilty until proven innocent. Can't afford to combat my army of lawyers and sue me for my wrongful accusation? Sorry, you're out of luck. Essentially, these laws would allow unprecedented rights to "big media" so they don't have to follow the rules the rest of us have to follow. Big media wants to be the judge, jury, and executioner and these laws aim to give them that right.

All this to "protect intellectual property"? Bull pucky.

And you think this is a good thing?

it basically says: if a website hosts content that is copyrighted, the website can be shutdown and involved parties can be fined/jailed...So every youtube video you've ever seen with music in it that they didn't create themselves, would be breaking the law.

so if you upload a video that has your favorite song playing in the background, and you didn't get permission to use it, you can be in trouble if they decide to go after you. And youtube, for example, would have about 50% or more of it's videos removed because most are like that.

plus the other crap that's just as stupid.

Wow the irony. "They shouldn't be allowed to block themselves in protest of us wanting the right to block things"
