I believe no matter who wins the next presidential election, there will be an assassination attempt by 2014...

I don't think our economy will truly ever recover, I think national politics is incredibly toxic and our Government is functionally defunct.

Culturally the gap between the 'haves' and the 'have nots' is honestly tremendous - not just in economic terms but in damn near every imaginable and measurable way. We are at a catastrophic point where enough of the population is far more functionally educated and advanced than others; or put another way - too much of our society literally depends on the hard work, ingenuity and efficiency of others.

Some lunatic is prolly going to snap Oswald style when trying to reconcile reality with the talking points of the status quo...

I am not optimistic about our future at all.

In the next couple of years there will either be a lot of changes made thru government action, or a lot of changes made thru violent actions.

Probably both actually.

as a teenager I though my kids would go through some kind of revolt... as ive gotten older ive watched that time line shorten.. I honestly believe in my life time we will have some form of open conflict in this country, I agree within 10 years something like an asasination will spark a major gun grab or an overt move by the goverment against a major religion and it will be all over but the crying...

I pray just about every night that Im wrong.

its amazing how much i keep hearing this lately...its one thing to hear it on the net....but i'm hearing this speculation in everyday life.....ive never heard so much talk of revolution and dissatisfaction with current events...people are talking about it everywhere...and that is a bit of a scary thought when old man bob and old maid laura at the local cafe is talking about it to their retired friends...followed by kids in college classes....and even mentions of it on the news and political discussions

i think the govt knows this and that is why the relatively rapid power grabs are happening right now...in preparations by the govt to quell any uprising

Maybe I read too much about political history, social history, observe too much about people, societies, cultures...

We are approaching an apex.

The anger and discontent coupled with a daily dose of the media portraying everything as US vs Them... add in politicos in DC who only worry about CYA instead of doing whats right for the nation... how can the end result be anythign other than conflict.

I hope you are wrong on the assasination thing. I think we will be in for much worse times...home invasions on the rise..criminals no longer fear. Police forces cut due to $$$.
If we even lost basic needs for 4 weeks..people in America would become animals.
Small communities..maybe would pull together some..big cities..I wouldn't want to be anywhere near one.
We will see what happens. But it will happen at some point. We all know it. Maybe not my lifetime.

From the 1860's to the 1980's, we averaged a presidential assassination attempt about once a decade.

Historically speaking, the people rally around such an attempt - and usually in ways that you can't predict. Reagan's assassination attempt gave us the Brady Bill. JFK's gave us the great society.

I'm not so sure things would be entirely bleak after such an attempt.

An assassination is highly unlikely.

A much more serious and realistic threat is for the entire world economy to go into a massive depression on a scale that would make the 30s seem like boom times.

Israel and/or the US bomb the Iranian nuclear facilities.

Iran retaliates first with disruption of Oil then with attacks all over the Middle East.

Oil goes over 200 dollars and countries already teetering (Spain, Italy, Ireland, Insert other small Euro nations), fall.

The snowball crushes the EU and US economies...Asia and other nations follow.

Things get so bad, martial law becomes the norm in EU and the US.

Times are more stable than ever before in the US, regarding conflict.

This is the longest we've ever gone without being at war with a country, the longest we've gone without an assassination attempt, the longest we've gone without a major change in the constitution, the longest we've gone without expanding, the longest we've gone without major unrest.

Some of you forget that you've only lived a fraction of our history.

wait, what?

We are currently still at war in Afghanistan, we just pulled out* of Iraq, We are about to go into either Pakistan or Iran, or some other uppity Middle Eastern Country.

There was an attempt to Assassinate Bush Jr.

Our constitution is being completely undermined in ways that it has never been assaulted before.

Some times violence is needed to get people to act. We are in the corporate age where US Democracy has to figure out how they want the government to approach the new world economy. I think the most sensible outcome would be a balanced trade policy and reforms to campaign financing. We need to neutralize to large threats to our Democracy, the power of money and the power of foreign interests. Most everything else is secondary.

Even with your context (which is still dubious) I don't think that this is anywhere near the most quiet time in our history.
