First Smartphone: Garth, should I buy an iPhone 4S or wait for the iPhone 5?
|
I'm about to get my first Smartphone ever, and everyone at Large Portland Shoe Company uses Apple products, so that's what I'm going with too. The problem is that I don't want to buy an iPhone 4S at the end of January just to have the iPhone 5 come out some time in March with the iPad 3. But if the 5 isn't going to come out until next December, then I'll just go with the 4S. Any advice on what to do?

given apple's consistently underwhelming upgrades from version to version, you're probably fine with the 4s. the only thing likely to come with a 5 is LTE. if that's a dealbreaker for you, then wait.

5 will have a bigger screen. The 4S screen is pathetic compared to what is out there now.

Should prolly wait until they release some Steve Jobs commemorative limited edition gadget later in the year. They may wait another year to do this but I doubt it.

the smartphone market has caught up to the iphone i personally probably wont own another one. like all of apples products, if you really want to tweak and customize, you are better off with something else

IPhone is mid-cycle, not likely updated any time soon. There are better screens out there but generally come with less battery life. If you want one I'd go ahead and get it, you can still usually sell them for a good price if you want to upgrade whenever 5 comes out.

SAMSUNG GALAXY SII YOU FOOL! cheaper, larger screen then the iphone5 will ever have... It also has gorilla glass and a dual core processor. The software for the phone was not written by retarded thumbless chimps but by actual smart people who wants you to personalize and like your phone.. I'd buy two galaxy sII before I'd buy one more Iphone and I have two Iphones..

Lower resolution though but I still wouldn't ever trade it for an Apple phone.

i think it really depends on what you use your phone for - i'm currently using a samsung droid charge which has a beautiful super amoled screen, which is awesome with google maps & navigation. i wish it had all the apps and games that iOS does, and also wish it has the iPhone's battery life, but it's not what i primarily use the phone for.

I'd get an Android, but whatever. If you want speed, Verizon seems like the network to beat right now. My brother reports insane network speeds with Verizon in SE Portland. 20mbit sustained, with off-peak bursts or better, faster than his cable. He entertains his child by streaming 720p video from home server to phone.

My wife and I each need a smartphone, which is another good reason to go with an iPhone. They're $200 a pop with Verizon, as opposed to $300 a pop for a Galaxy or SII.

you'll be paying a minimum of $720 just for the data plan over the course of two years (per phone). so the extra $100 doesn't mean a lot in the big scheme of things.

The iphone is a great phone. I bought a galaxy s for "free" and loved it. Did everything I wanted and more. I had bad luc though and hit a known issue with the phones turning themselves off when they were in sleep mode. So my buddy gifted my an ipphone 3gs. it does everything I want and more. Between the two I'd say I liked the android more, but I like the UI and I also messed aroudn with it a lot more when it was new, so I was probably using it "more." At the end of the day though both are great phones, and Seething is right that a hundred bucks up front is just a small part of the total price you pay for a smartphone.

right now i'm using simple and clean 2.4.3 and siyahkernel and it's worked amazingly compared to what i was getting out of the box. even though batteries aren't supposed to need conditioning anymore it feels like my battery life increased quite a bit after several cycles of use. i get a day/15 hours or so easily with 'heavy' use: texting all day, some browsing, some gaming, a few calls, checking out apps and constantly just looking at my phone since i'm so in love with it. so i'll wake up at 7 and put it in the charger around 10 and my battery will be at about 25% - 50% life depending on just how much i used it. i keep GPS and wireless off until i need it and my screen is at 50% brightness unless i'm using the camera/looking at pictures, my background is solid black. i think there are ICS roms out but i'm going to wait for the official release before i fiddle with this stuff again.
