Or is it a private entity like our Federal Reserve system?

It is owned by the Crown (state run)

Maybe this explains why canada is able to afford universal health care? When Canada borrows money from the crown, does it owe interest?

Not sure on that.

I don't think we pay interest to ourselves for taking money from ourselves. That would be a bit silly wouldn't it?

Canada can afford universal health care because they tax their citizens to afford it.

It would be genius. They could raise taxes to pay the interest and spend all of the interest money on some government boondoggles that don't work instead of giving it to the Federal reserve like we do.

Truth.

And they don't spend as much on defense, so there is more to go around to other areas like education and health care. You don't notice a big taxable difference until you get into the higher incomes though. I pay about the same taxes as I did when I worked in Canada but here I have to also pay for my health insurance, so I end up with less.

Canada is able to take their taxes further because they don't pay interest on their government debt. Central banks should be run by the people and create their own money interest free. If anyone was to doubt this, I would suggest you educate yourself on fractional reserve banking, and the federal reserve.
