What does it say you did wrong. I just had a woman from Louisiana who came to me. She had 5 years of short forms where she filed in the incorrect state and by the time I filed amended returns, she was getting back $2600 in refund rather than paying anything.

Said I didnt list my unemployment insurance and this interest income. Big shock for me.

I got it and in two weeks it demanded I respond. Why it took them so long to figure this out I dont know. I thought I did it right. I just filled out an EZ form online and did it that way

In general, Unemployment insurance is income. Here is a link http://www.irs.gov/publications/p17/ch12.html#en_US_2011_publink1000172031

You can always negotiate an installment agreement. Here is an IRS link: http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=149373,00.html

If you can pay it off , do so. It will cost you $54 to set up if you automatic debit pay, and $104 if you mail in payment.

You must be one of those evil rich who need to pay their fair share. (AKA all of it)

Fact is our system is so messed up someone in a high income/expense state pays far more than someone living better in a low income/expense state. Welcome to "progressive" taxes. Of course ever liberal "knows" that "progressive" taxes only hurt the rich; who can well afford it. If they can live on 10% of their income then they should be glad to give away 90% of it. Obama needs to buy more votes.

Well of course we pay more. Someone has to help support all the red welfare states.

You have to respond quickly, you don't have to pay quickly.

You can pay in full now.

You can set up an installment plan and pay X per month. However, there is a fee to set up and the interest will continue to add up (.5% per month)

You can also request up to 120 days to pay in full and avoid the cost of setting up a payment plan (though you still pay more interest). Choose that and you avoid the cost to set up the installment plan.

when i had to pay back extra (about $2000) because i filled out my return incorrectly the tax office had to come to an agreement with me for paying it off. I could have said $5 per month and they'd have to agree but i said $10 because i am just a great guy.

then they took all of my tax return to pay off the outstanding amount during the next tax season angry

If you work for a company and you get reimbursed for expenses those expenses include taxes you incurred. If you own a company those expenses do not include taxes. At least not according to the IRS.
