Been reading a lot of the self published $.99 independant stuff on Amazon lately, mostly short novels or parts of an overall series, looking for gems in a sea of crap.

Great to see how Amazon supports this market though and create a framework for some of the better work to get noticed, one of the top ranked SF books the last couple of weeks was Wool by Hugh Howey, a relatively anonymous independant author and judging by his web page a humble guy that is thrilled to get a three star review from his Mom. I took a chance on it and was stunned, one of the finest post apocalypse works I have ever read and would recommend it highly if you like the Fallout underground society type stuff.

Kindle only but Prime members can check it out for free I think.

Heh predictable comment I guess.

No, unfortunately I'm not Hugh Howey, my attempts at writing fiction are LOL bad, though possibly of some comedic value happy

I do read a ton of Sci Fi though and that is one of those rare books you didn't expect much from but by the end realized it could very well become one of the genre's classics.

Omnibus Edition of Wool is currently the 63rd best selling book on Kindle, 120-5 star reviews, 4-4star and nothing lower - that's unprecedented for Amazon reviews.

BBC is negotiating a TV series, kind of interesting watching a new author gain fame.

Hey. I just had this pop up from a Google alert. I nearly spit my water all over my monitor when I read the second post. Classic.

Thanks for the shout-out and the praise. It still baffles me that so many people are finding and enjoying the series. And yeah, I'm a huge Fallout nerd. I played through the first two games at least a dozen times over the years (and it might be more pathetic than that: I wouldn't be surprised to find out I'd played through Fallout 2 at least 20 times).

I'm still waiting for an isometric turn-based sequel. It'll probably never happen, though I did enjoy Fallout 3.

Oh . . . cool story on realizing the link between Wool and Fallout (because I didn't put this together on my own, but I must have been influenced by my love of the games). It was a VP at the BBC who pointed out the similarities. We were on a conference call while they were pitching the idea of a TV series, and this guy asks me if I'm a gamer. And as soon as he did, I knew where he was going. All the links fell into place. The two of us geeked out over Fallout while all these other VPs are sitting there, probably bored out of their minds.

Hmm. Maybe not as cool a story as I thought it was going to be.

Okay, thanks again for the mention.

So after reading all the great reviews of this series, I bought the Kindle version for my tablet. I just finished the 3rd book and I'm really enjoying it. I could easily see the first book being a Twilight Zone or Outer Limits episode.

So if the actual Hugh Howey stops by this thread again: 2 thumbs up. Great job. We're looking forward to a lot more from you in the future.

hmm. i could buy it on amazon and convert it into a format my nook can view. then i can totally return it on him. TAKE THAT RANDOM GUY! angry but it's like $6 so i doubt i'd bother. i wonder if bn will start doing this kind of thing too.

also, hilariously, bn does have the first book in paperback format. not for nook. cry that's probably going to be the sticking point for me. i don't want to steal the book from him but if i can't just download it on my nook, that's exactly what i'll do.

$6? They're $0.99 each or $4.99 for five. And they're pretty good books too.

Strange thing.  Cheaper to buy them singly than as omnibus.  .99 X 5 = 4.95.
