Short version: guy said he was 30 pounds over his weight limit a week ago and still 11 over now. he's probably gonna be still dehydrated when he fights.

i guess we'll see!

Probably.

Wrestlers in colleges all across the country have been doing it for years.

Weight class is 120-150 you want to be 149.
Bulk up to 160 and lose 10 pounds the week before the competition.

fighters usually gain back their weight after the weigh ins.

i don't think you know what you're talking about. 30 pounds isn't normal like you imply it is.

I didn't say that it was normal.

I just said that athletes in all sports have been doing stupid things to their bodies for years in the name of gaining a competitive edge.

In wrestling, it's large amounts of weight loss very quickly.

It's not healthy or smart, but they do it.

it's great that you also know about weight-cutting. thank you for sharing.

so back to the thread.

the title was, is weight-cutting a problem in mma?

i think it is. i've seen a lot of fighters gas really early and you never know why for sure but it makes you wonder.

on one side you have dana white saying your job is on the line to lose this weight, it's an advantage, there's a lot of money on the line. on the other side you have your health. I don't think having a doctor there saving you from dying makes it ok.

in bjj, wrestling, boxing, and any other contact sport like that it is essential to cut weight if you are going to be competitive at all. the reason being is that the other guy is going to do it, and you don't want to be in a division where you are the little guy. you want to have the advantage.

now 30 pounds, for the most part probably isn't as abnormal as you think it is. the heavier of a guy you are the easier it is to lose weight--and the body adapts to doing it. for instance, big guys in the heavyweight division can cut more water weight than a lightweight division guy. anderson silva walks around at 235 and cuts to 205 in order to make weight. these are guys that are well aware of their limitations and how their body responds.

and yes, you gain quite a bit of your weight back in the ~1 day period after the weigh-in through carb loading and hydrating. unless you were close to dying, it affecting performance isn't as horrible as you might think it is. i cannot emphasize enough that your body does adjust to doing it, and quite a few people practice doing it before their fight.

the day between the weigh-in and the fight is the problem. in 24 hours, all the significant weight reduction is from water loss. it's enough time to allow them to rehydrate from extreme dehydration.

i just think the enormous pressure to attain that advantage might be coming at a cost to their long-term health.
i wish there was data on how long the careers are of these guys that do the extreme cuts all the time.

The amount of weight they gain, and lose, not to mention how quickly they do either, is absolutely insane. Goes with all wrestling/boxing/fighting.

Johnson is fighting his first fight at a HIGHER weight class. He used to fight at 170 and struggled to lose the weight then. Now at 185, he still struggles to lose the weight. Fighters do this all the time with no problem. Something is wrong with him and/or his handlers.

Not that dissimilar to carb loading for other sports.

The dude is HUGE for a WW and large for a MW. With his track record of missing weight, he is probably just undisciplined in the approach.

Which is probably why he is going to get fired if he loses his fight tonight. Might get fired even if he wins if it is a boring fight.

Yeah it is ridiculous. Dana is going to have to do something or people will just stop making weight for non-title fights (especially if Johnson wins).

That has nothing to do with what I posted, but thanks for playing.

You must like seeing your icon because you post drivel, whether it is political or not. And your icon sucks ass.

besides, like it matters where I post

Explain how my comment was incorrect?

If fighters are going to make a mockery of the weight classes and cause fans to bitch about possible advantages or "what if" scenarios, then why shouldn't Dana White penalize a fighter for being unprofessional?

they did it at my high school all the time for wrestling...I'd see them walking around with water bottles that were covered up (with tape or paper around it and taped on) and they would just spit into the cup all day. I'm sure the pros might take a fluid pill or something that makes them pee a lot too...

Ok...now I agree with you. Your unedited post didn't make sense.

It is still not enough though, as it discredits the weight classes.

If you are being paid to fight on PPV with hundreds of thousands of people watching (and millions watching later) and you can't make weight (something you should have down to a science by that point in your career), then perhaps primetime is not for you.

No, but if you are going to post a fragment of a thought and than get incendiary about it being misinterpreted, then perhaps you just shouldn't post.

It's also funny to see you get bent out of shape when you were the one that got nasty (and then posted a half-wit response) in the first place.

what if he is sick? it is easy to see how that could effect your weight cutting.

ever get nervous or stressed before your fight? I know someone who feels sick every time they get stressed, lolsad.

anyways, i found this article about weight cutting:

http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2008/01/18/how-to-cut-weight/

"If you weigh 200 lbs., 120 of those pounds are water, which is distributed between three systems: blood, cell interiors (as pertaining to powerlifting, muscle fibers), and the spaces between the blood vessels and the cells dependent on them. Approximately 8% of your total water volume is contained in blood plasma, 67% is contained in the cells themselves, and 25% is found in the spaces between the two, which includes subcutaneous water. It is imperative that athletes understand the distribution areas from which excess water, and not life-sustaining water, can be most safely excreted, pulling from critical systems only as a last resort. Thermoregulatory and mild electrolyte manipulation, with potassium-sparing supplementation for the latter, provides a compelling combination of efficacy and safety. Bear in mind that “safety”, particularly when used in the context of something that is inherently dangerous, is relative. "
