I'm planning on hocking my ipad 2 and then buying a new one soon. The next ipad comes out in March and will finally have decent screen resolution.

I know that the future belongs to droids and possibly MS portables, but i don't think we're there yet. Should i make the jump to droid (or windoze) now, or stick with Apple and wait a couple cycles?

It is fine that ipad3 will sport higher res, faster cpu and gpu but I think the one thing that is majorly lacking for tablets is the use of a stylus. and I dont mean the crappy stylus technology out now, but a next gen stylus that has an ultra fine point and does not pixelize the writing at all. Real pen and paper experience! This will be the only feature I will upgrade for.

A better stylus would be nice, but i am not sure there is a lot of demand outside of artists. Bluetooth keyboard + Pages is what most people want.
Still, it would be an interesting side market for a 3rd party vendor.

People would like to take notes with their ipad. There are some really slick handwriting and notetaking apps but you must use your finger.
Taking notes with your tablet is the only ting missing imo.

To be honest I much prefer removable media but cloud has its advantages.

Tablets are a year or more from being really ready for the big time. If you really need/want one now, I'd suggest checking Woot and other daily special services and grab the first tablet they offer that fits your requirements.

I dont like how tablets these days aren't "real" Windoze-using laptop PCs (unlike the pre-ipad ones) but I gotta have one for work and stuff.
But yeah, in 5 years they'll obviate both traditional laptops and consoles.

Well, turns out Woot is having a sale on a refurbished Toshiba 10" tablet. My understanding is that it is a solid tablet. Some don't like it because it's fairly bulky. Others don't mind because the bulkiness is due to full size USB and HDMI ports and a replaceable battery. Anyway...here is the link...

the "cloud" is limited like anything else that has bandwidth caps
whether its file size or DL/UL speed....to get around a few of those limitations you have to pay a monthly fee for most services
then you have ridiculous crap of not having a internet connection...and the swapping of data at slow speeds compared to swapping a card
cloud service may be the future....but it is nowhere near anything worthwhile right now

The higher screen resolution is not known yet, but should be in the next two weeks I think when they announce it.
This is the main reason I have not gotten an iPad or any tablet yet, the 1024x768 and 1200x800 resolutions are just crap as far as I am concerned.
Anyways, if they bump up the resolution for the iPad I will actually buy it on day 1 and thankfully I know somebody at an electronics store that will "misplace it" for me so I wont have to wait in line like an idiot, even though Apple doesn't like that but who cares what apple likes.
If they don't come out with a higher resolution, I will go for a Asus Transformer Prime even though it isn't exactly what I wanted.
I just want the thing for Web Browsing anyways.

Our EMR program works on tablets. Being able to just punch history info directly into the tablet is far better than writing it down and then transferring it with a desktop.
I think I'm with mithan - I'll see just how upgraded the screen resolution is first.

I have an Asus Transformer, and for the most part am happy with it. I like that it has a keyboard attachment, which cost me an extra $124 (from amazon, otherwise MSRP was $150), which essentially turns it into a netbook.
The keyboard also has 2 USB ports, as well as an additional slot for an SD card, and a battery which gives you more time on your tablet (the battery recharges the one on your tablet).
Watching Netflix and Crunchyroll on it is pretty nice (although obviously nowhere near as good as a 50" tv), and reading on it is pretty nice too.

Dude, Corky is right an ipad with a good stylus would rock, toss in some decent pad convert CAD apps, and it would make my job a million times easier, I could do real time changing of site drawings when I am RE on installation sites.

Steam includes DRM, but it also hosts your game distributions for retrieval at your convenience (bandwitdh allowing), and keeps games updated etc.
A mixed blessing, but at least it's not only DRM.
I wonder though why it doesn't host save game files, that would be convenient.

It does for some games. One example that does is Torchlight (a Diablo style game).
A number of Steam games also use the cloud to save settings. So you can switch PCs and not have to redo your keybindings for something like Team Fortress 2.
