Help: Carpet Cleaners and/or Shop Vacs

So my GF wants a new portable carpet cleaner. The one she had began to leak and finally gave up the ghost. She did some preliminary research on some other models and some folks seemed to point her towards just getting a shop vacuum and using that after using a hand sprayer to apply the cleaner stuff. So I am soliciting anyone's experiences and recommendations for either a portable in-home carpet cleaner or a shop vac - they are making shop vacs now that are smaller and look like they were meant for the home rather than for the shop so I know this isn't a new concept. Have any of you used any of these type products and have any recommendations? Thanks.

If it was for just spot cleaning, then the Shop vac trick may be better. But if you're doing the whole floor then just get the Carpet cleaner.

What do you need it for would be my first question? What's the scope of usage?

Yeah, sorry, I should have been clearer, sorry! It will be for spot cleaning rather than cleaning whole large areas. When we have a need for more than spot cleaning, we rent a steamer or pay a service to come and do it.

http://www.bissell.com/spotbot-pet-deep-cleaner/ We have an older version of this. It works very well. Shop vacs won't do cleaning - it will just swallow ( ). You'll still have to clean by hand. The spot cleaner does both (it spits and swallows!)

The one she had that started leaking was a Bissel - she said she's sworn that brand off, but I will pass your recommendation on, thanks!

It depends on what you are calling a spot. For spot cleaning a Large spot a vac is enough. If it is small spot that isn't even needed with the right spotter. The only thing you are really trying to do with large carpet cleaners is dislodge deeper dirt. Spraying can not do that. That is for surface stuff. Most people end up using too much soap and leaving a film that then cleans everyones shoes and makes the room, carpet, or spot even worse later.

A spot would be like cat puking on the carpet, spilled a glass of iced tea, kid tracked mud onto the carpet, touching up the heaviest foot traffic areas right near doorways and such, that kind of thing. Basically stuff that the normal dry vacuum won't do a good job of cleaning, but which can be rinsed out of the carpet with water and/or scrubbed up a bit with cleaning solution and the remaining water vacuumed up...
