Finally, he decided to put a camera in there next to the rat traps to see WTF is going on and why they keep avoiding the traps

naw... that thing nailed him on the head just before the ears. The fact that his right paw started shaking is a sign of neurological damage. His skull was probably shattered in several pieces. Do you really think it could take that thing snapping on it's head and not either be caught or at least bleeding? I think it scared the shit out of him and may have scraped him but I don't think it caught him. I don't think he'd still have all his digits when he pulled back if he'd gotten caught.

My parents had similar issues with chipmunks. Animal control gave them a live trap and they ended up catching and releasing 15 over a 2 week period.
Apparently, they were living in a chipmunk drop house.

Definitely a grisly video. Hard to be sympathetic when you realize the sort of damage these animals can cause though. A quick humane kill is a thousand times more preferable to the fact that the squirrel is probably going to crawl away and die somewhere with a crushed skull over the next few hours or days...

I am having the same sort of issue at the moment. I'm pretty sure I'm hearing squirrels in my attic. They have not, thus far, made their way down into closets / walls (that I can tell) but, on very cold nights, I can hear them up in the attic. Gonna have to hire someone to both find out how they are getting in and to get out what's in I guess cause no way I'm crawling around up there and falling through (little crawl space attic).

Tenkly your friend either needs new traps or to secure the ones in the video down; either glue, nails, or wedge it in with weights.
The trap flying upwards is why its losing lethality.

It doesn't sound like your pal intended to be cruel to the animals, and I believe he thought they were rats and not squirrels. I might have taken the same route of using rat traps without realizing they were squirrels.
With that said though, there are other traps/methods to be used for squirrels - not only the "live traps" that will provide a higher likelihood of a quick, humane kill.
There were two squirrels in that video - only one of them got hit with the trap - how does your buddy know that both of them are still there? I'd be surprised if that one that got nailed was actually OK afterwards.
Killing animals quickly and humanely is one thing and I have little or no problem with it in legal hunting and legit vermin control scenarios - and sometimes the law makes it such that you have little or no choice in methods with "pest" animals and whatnot. It's just not the most comfortable thing to think about inflicting a lot of suffering that could otherwise be avoided.

Here is a alternate solution. Grab a shotgun and like 5 boxes of shells. Any time you hear a noise in the wall, unload 2 or 3 rounds in that general area. You may not eliminate the problem, but I guarantee you it will be fun. Since it is your friends house, you won't have to stick around to clean up or pay for repairs!

I'm gonna tell him to glue down the traps, maybe that'll work.
You guys can cry about animal cruelty but it is what it is. They're invading and destroying his house, and costing him money . IF they die, so be it. That is life.
