Is there a search engine out there that is a good alternative to Google? Not personalized, not optimized, not localized, not based on things "they" figure I might be interested in. Just a plain old search. Does anything like that even exist anymore?

Bing might still do some stuff. DuckDuckGo is supposed to be just pure search. grin

Definitely.
I've used dogpile for 15 years and never been disappointed.

Bing is actually pretty nice these days. I've been using it as my home page for a while now just for the daily picture wink

My homepage is bing and the only thing I ever bing is google. I figure I must be causing some M$ brander somewhere to tear out their hair.

Watch Dexter, they suggest a search engine in one of the episodes (7 or 8) this season. I didn't bother to catch the name of it, but if a fictitious serial killer uses it to stalk his prey, it must be good!

Dogpile is still out there? I used that for so many years and then was googling without even thinking about it.
